Abstract:
Manuscript on parchment (thick, holes, end pieces), in two volumes, of a collection of sermons by various writers, including Bernard of Clairvaux, Geoffroi Babion, Jacobus Berengarius, Ivo of Chartres, and Hugh of St. Victor. Written perhaps at the Cistercian abbey of Hautecombe to which it belonged. The manuscript may originally have been a single volume. and Written in the middle of the 12th century, perhaps at the Cistercian abbey of Hautecombe to which it belonged.
Description:
Acquired from C. A. Stonehill in 1957 by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Backs of quires of both volumes cut in at sewing stations. Sewn on three cords. Paper lining between supports on spine. Red edges. Both volumes half bound in brown mottled calf with bright pink paper sides and two red gold-tooled labels on each volume: "Manuscr. Homiliae Caes. Max. Cod. I [and II]" and "Saecul. XIII". Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 125, 128, 151, 153, 158, 159 and 197, all of Hautecombe provenance., Folios 1r and 158v stained with loss of text., Half bound in brown mottled calf with bright pink paper sides and two red gold-tooled labels on each volume: "Manuscr. Homiliae Caes. Max. Cod. I" The manuscript may have been a single volume before rebinding., Plain red initials, 4- to 2-line, some with small pearls added to the body of the letter. Spaces for rubrics remain unfilled., and Script: Written in late caroline minuscule by several scribes, above top line.

Description:
Binding: Original brown leather over heavy wooden boards, sewn on four split leather thongs; plaited leather headbands; spine missing. The covers are blind-tooled with frames and lozenges of triple fillets and the following stamps: a lare and a small lozenge-shaped fleur-de-lis; a large and a small rozette; a circular Pascal Lamb; a rectangular stamp with inscription “MARIA”. Remnants of two brass clasps attached to the front board., Most pages slightly damaged by the acid ink. Water stains at the bottom of the outer margins of the leaves in the final quires., Paragraph marks and underlining in red. Red stroking of majuscules. Red plain initials (2-3 lines; 4 lines f. 3r, 7 lines f. 73r); red flourished initials with black penwork (9 lines, f. 72r, 7 lines and of a less careful execution f. 116v). All initials have guide letters in the margin., and Script: Two hands writing careful Gothic scripts: A (ff. 3r-71v) Cursiva Libraria; B (ff. 72r-136r) Hybrida Libraria.

Manuscript on paper of a collection of sermons. The author is nowhere mentioned; the sermons are all in the learned style of Caracciolo (Robertus Caracciolus, Robertus de Licio OFM, 1425-1495), but only a few of them can be identified, so the authorship of most is not certified. With a list of impediments to Communion. The margins, inserted leaves and leaflets are covered with abundant additional material and notes in the same and in other contemporary hands, generally in Latin, some in Italian. In the text, the additions, and the notes a very large number of classical, patristic and medieval authors are quoted.

f. 2 missing, ff. 71-94 (two quires) are missing. The upper edges of the final leaves are damaged by moist.There are many inserted leaflets., and Watermarks: Bird, Briquet 12202; Human head, Briquet 15705; Hunting horn, var. Manuscript on paper of La Sfera, by either Gregorio Dati (1362-1435), or Leonardo Dati O.P. (1360-1425). A contemporary hand has numbered the Books in the following way: Book I (f. 1r): “Terzo”; Book II (f. 7r): “Quarto”; Book III (f. 13r): “Primo”; Book IV (f. 19r): “Secondo”. and Script: copied by a single hand in Southern Gothica Semitextualis Libraria; the first majuscule of each strophe written between the double bounding lines. The four books open with a 3-line red plain initial with or without interior reserved shapes.

Attribution of the text to Nicolas Barnaud appears uncertain., Binding: Original French calf binding, the otherwise plain covers with double perimeter border of gold-tooled lines, back divided into six compartments by five raised bands, the compartments outlined by a double gold rule and with a fleuron in the center, except for title "SOLI DONIV PHVS" impressed in gold in second compartment from top, red-speckled edges, head and foot of spine repaired., Script: Written in a good French cursive hand sloping to the right., and Watermarks: Text paper quite browned, with watermark of rays (?) within a double circle, with inscription, not identified; paper of leaves with drawings thicker and whiter, no watermark observed.

In addition to the Speculum Christiani (ff. 64r-100v), the manuscript contains an unidentified Latin alphabetical preacher's manual (ff. 1r-62v), compiled for the purpose of composing sermons. It is incomplete at the beginning, starting with the entry Amor, and continues with 149 entries to Christi acensio (under X)., Manuscript on paper in Anglicana (Scribe 1, ff. 1-62v) and Secretary script (Scribe 2, 64r-100v), produced in England in the mid-fifteenth century., and Spine title: "MS Loci qm Theologi Ord: Alpho 80."

Binding: limp vellum., Headings and various names and phrases in the Speculum Christiani are rubricated., and Spiritual diagram on f. 85v: two ladders are drawn, one for "Celum," one for "Infernum." On the rungs are written the virtues and vices pertaining to each, eight for heaven and nine for hell. The uprights are inscribed Spes and Fides for heaven, and Superbia and Larga Conscientia for hell.
