Photographs created by E. J. Bellocq chiefly of nude prostitutes in Storyville, New Orleans, Louisiana, circa 1910-1915, and printed from his negatives by an unidentified printer, probably in 1950. E. J. Bellocq (1873-1949), born John Ernest Joseph Bellocq, was a commercial photographer who worked in New Orleans, Louisiana, circa 1902-circa 1940. Bellocq is best known for his photographs of prostitutes working in Storyville, the legalized red light district of New Orleans. and Print No. 3 depicts a nude woman reclining on a wicker chaise lounge with a pillow.

Photographs created by E. J. Bellocq chiefly of nude prostitutes in Storyville, New Orleans, Louisiana, circa 1910-1915, and printed from his negatives by an unidentified printer, probably in 1950. E. J. Bellocq (1873-1949), born John Ernest Joseph Bellocq, was a commercial photographer who worked in New Orleans, Louisiana, circa 1902-circa 1940. Bellocq is best known for his photographs of prostitutes working in Storyville, the legalized red light district of New Orleans. and Print No. 1 depicts a partially nude woman posed standing in profile beside a bentwood bed; her left arm rests on a draped nightstand. She wears opera stockings with bows, as well as underwear gathered at her waist, which exposes her torso. Other elements of the room include a canopy and lace mosquito curtain over the bed, as well as a comforter, pillows, and flower on it. Artwork in the room includes a portrait of a woman and sculpture of a female figure on the nightstand, as well as an indistinct portrait of a woman in a heart-shaped mat on the wall.

The collection primarily contains letters received by Carel Mondriaan and his wife Mary Mondriaan, including one autograph letter and twelve postcards, signed, from Piet Mondrian writing from Paris (1937-1938), London (1938-1939), and New York (1941). Other correspondents in the papers are Willem Frederik Mondriaan (two telegrams, 1943-1944); Harry Holtzman (one typed letter, signed, 1948), Michel Seuphor (one autograph letter, signed, 1956), and Kunstkreis-Verlag (one typed letter, 1956). Also present is a manuscript inventory in an unidentified hand (1946) listing some of the items in the collection, a printed announcement for Louis Cornelis Mondriaan's funeral (1943), a photograph of Carel and Mary Mondriaan with Piet Mondrian in his studio at 278 Boulevard Raspail, Paris (1936), and an album holding seventy-two carte-de-visite portrait photographs of Mondriaan family members (1870s-1880s).
Description:
Carel Mondriaan was born on June 1, 1880, and died on July 28, 1956. The younger brother of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), Mondriaan had a career as an insurance broker. and Purchased from S. W. Myers (Sotheby's sale, 1983 November 7, lot 291) on the Edwin J. Beinecke Book Fund, 1983.

Collection consists of 34 pieces of correspondence, including autograph letters, postcards, and holiday cards, from O'Keeffe to Susan and Alexander Girard, and their daughter Sansi Needham Girard Agnew. The Girards were residents of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and most letters discuss personal topics, including plans for visits to each others' homes. Also included are invitations to openings at museums exhibiting O'Keeffe's work which were sent on her behalf. The collection holds 23 snapshot photographs of O'Keeffe, the Girards, and others at events, gatherings, and on travels, and plus some scenery in New Mexico, and a portrait of O'Keeffe in an 8 by 10 inch format bearing a studio stamp of Charles Eames; the photographs date from 1963 to 1973. and With the collection is one letter from Robert Jaffie to Thomas Needham, dated March 10, 1959, discussing a recent visit with O'Keeffe.

Abstract:
Collection consists of a scrapbook and other papers. The scrapbook, "My Scouting History," contains autograph and typescript entries, photographs, merit badges and awards, correspondence, and printed ephemera documenting Jackson's membership in an African-American boy scout troop, Troop 42 of Camden, New Jersey from 1937 to 1943. Other papers include one letter, photographs, scarves, and printed material, dating from 1946 to 1965, relating chiefly to Jackson's involvement in Troop 43 of the Boy Scouts of America.
