Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Vellum stays adhered inside and outside of quires. Backs of quires cut in for original sewing. Bookblock tacketed to a semi-limp paper case, reinforced at the spine. Handwritten paper label with title and a printed medallion with Flora (?) standing on an anchor and globe (?), both on spine., Blue initial, 6-line, with nice penwork designs, f. 1r. Smaller initials, 2-line, red with purple designs or blue with red designs, alternate throughout. Headings in pale red. Paragraph marks alternate red and blue. Later addition of arms in lower margin, f. 1r, effaced and covered with mending strips., Purchased from B. M. Rosenthal in 1959 by Thomas E. Marston., Script: Written by a single scribe in mercantesca script, above top line., and Watermarks: unidentified cherries (?) in upper margin, trimmed.

Description:
Binding: Thirteenth century, England. Original wound, caught up sewing with heavy thread, on four tawed skin, slit straps laced through tunnels in the edge to channels on the outside of oak boards and wedged. The natural color endbands are sewn on leather cores which are laid in grooves on the outside of the boards and pegged. The spine is back bevelled. Covered in tawed skin, originally white, but now dark brown on the outside. The turn-ins of the upper board are serrated. Two strap-and-pin fastenings, the pins (traces only) on the lower board, the upper one cut in for the fabric-reinforced leather straps. Some sewing supports broken, one board detached, and some covering leather and straps wanting., Many leaves stained, damaged, but with little loss of text, except on bottom of f. 1 and top of f. 36, which are torn with loss of text., Plain initials, 3- to 2-line, alternate red and blue for each chapter. Headings in red. Guide letters for decorator., Purchased from H. P. Kraus in 1959 by Thomas E. Marston., and Script: Written in gothic bookhand, below top line.

Badly deteriorated by glue, worm holes and the fading of the ink on many pages., Detached from a binding. With the fragments a strip of parchment (goatskin), obviously coming from the same binding, is preserved. It is a fragment (c. 12 lines on both sides) of a Latin manuscript containing an unidentified text of Roman law (Italy, 14th century), written in two columns with a column of gloss at both sides of the text. The handwriting is Southern Textualis Libraria/Formata (Rotunda)., Foliated by cataloger in order suggested by worming. This may not reflect original organization., Script: Copied by various scribes all writing a rapid documentary script (Gothica Cursiva Currens)., and Watermark: letter P?.

Binding: Eighteenth century. Brown calf over wooden boards, blind-tooled. Five very small, round bosses on each board and two fastenings. Rebacked. Pastedowns and flyleaves are conjugate leaves from a gradual (Italy, 16th century): front pastedown hidden under bookplates; front flyleaf with parts of the third Christmas mass and the rubric for Circumcision; back flyleaf with part of the first Christmas mass; back pastedown with parts of the mass of Epiphany., One 9-line initial, f. 1r, St. Saturninus holding an open book and martyr's palm, three-quarter length in front of trees and sky, dark blue with white filigree; purple foliage against a gold ground edged in black, with curling purple, green, and gold foliage extending into margin. Full border, framed in blue and gold, with three roundels in lower margin, right and left, hour glasses with scrolls with the motto "Pan. se. de. moi.", center, a coat of arms (barry of 6, sable and argent; overall a bend or). In upper margin, at right, a smaller roundel with a duck; at center, a Greek cross in gold, on purple; each framed in gold with blue or purple. Some foliage, as in initial, in center outer margin; border otherwise filled with blue and purple flowers with red and green centers, symmetrically disposed with smaller blue, purple, and green flowers, blue, purple, red and gold dots and fine spiralling vines in light brown. 2-line initials throughout, red or blue with blue or red penwork, with flourishes. 1-line red or blue paragraph marks. Rubrics throughout., and Script: Written by one person in round gothic bookhand.
