In Latin., Script: Written in fine Carolingian minuscule primarily by two scribes. Scribe 1: ff. 1v-42v; Scribe 2: ff. 43r-96r, 98r-102r., Eleven large decorative initials (5- to 13-line) of very good quality in gold, green, red, and white, of the style usually associated with the school of Rheims. The initials are constructed of broad outlines in green which are decorated with unburnished gold (partly rubbed) and bordered with red. The letters terminate in interlace knots and animal heads. Empty spaces within the initials are filled with interlace grids of stylized foliage in unburnished gold laid on greenish ground. The stems of the most important initials (ff. 3r, 8v, 28v, 55r, 67r, 83r, 98r) are decorated with white interlace designs on red grounds., and Binding: Eighteenth century. Edges spattered red. Brown spattered calf, blind-tooled. Remains of paper label on spine.

Filing notes on upper cover. Title in majuscules on upper cover: "Quintii Haemiliani Cimbriaci Vti [for Vincentinus?]"., Half-page coat of arms (argent [oxidized], a chief with 3 roses gules above 2 bars gules; crest: bishop's mitre surmounted by gold cross) enclosed by a wreath with flowers and fruit and four ribbons, f. 1v. In Latin., Script: Copied by one hand in small Northern Gothica Textualis Libraria., All important illuminated leaves missing. Headings in red. Yellow heightening of the majuscules. 1-line flourished initials alternately red and blue. Numerous 2-line flourished initials in the same colours. 3-line dentelle initials with partial floral borders in gold (on f. 56r with bar-shaped extensions, on f. 57v no border)., The manuscript is heavily mutilated, some leaves are out of order and many (presumably all illuminated) leaves are cut out., and Binding: Nineteenth century. Light-brown leather over pasteboard; the covers gold-tooled with floral border and centre-piece. Gold-tooled spine with four raised bands. One large modern silver clasp attached to rear cover. Edges gilt and gauffered.

Acquired from L. C. Witten in 1954 by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Rigid vellum binding, gold-tooled. Traces of turn-ins and bosses from earlier binding on f. 130 and possibly on f. 1., One large illuminated initial, f. 3r, 9-line, pink with white highlights on irregular angular ground, blue with white filigree and a thin white line outlining the ground. Filled with a stylized interlacing pattern of white vine-stem, white with green and yellow shading against gold ground. Numerous small initials, 3-line, yellow, on blue or blue and pink grounds with white filigree. Initial heading in gold; running headlines for book numbers in red., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-2, palimpsest): Written by several scribes in humanistic bookhand; for the passages from Seneca, the initial letter for each verse is set between vertical bounding lines. Part II (ff. 3-130): Written by a single scribe, below top line, in humanistic bookhand that sits somewhat above the ruled line; the conclusion of the text on ff. 129v-130r was added by a different hand.

Binding: 17th-18th centuries. Brown/red calf, gold-tooled. Paste decorated edges. On spine, stamped in gold but nearly effaced: "Ciceronis et aliorum varia. MSS 1465"., Initials, 5- to 2-line, ff. 1r, 39v, 71r (space for additional initials on ff. 105v and 149r), gold edged in black with white-vine ornament, against crimson, green and light blue; white-vine extensions in upper and inner margins. On f. 1r a coat of arms in lower margin surrounded by a wreath with a ribbon. 3-, 2-, and 1-line initials in red or blue. Rubrics throughout., Script: Written in humanistic bookhand below the top line by two persons: Scribe 1) ff. 1r-128r and 149r-191v; Scribe 2) ff. 129r-148v and 192r-207v., and Water damage has obliterated several words in the lower left of f. 1r.

In Latin., Script: Copied by various hands in Iberian Praegothica., The original sections (articles 1, 2, 7 and 8) have red headings and red decorative line-fillers; 1-line plain initials and numerous 2-line (sometimes 3- or 4-line) plain or flourished initials or litterae duplices intermingled. Many round initials such as C, D, O, Q are filled with a human face ("face initials"); in art. 7 some initials I are zoomorphic and take the shape of a fish (ff. 127r, 134r). Red and purple initials normally alternate. Art. 4 has red initials. The remaining articles are undecorated., Lower edge of many leaves damaged, with loss of text. The final pages worn and smudged., and Binding: ca. 1800. Limp parchment with remains of two leather ties. On the spine the hand-written title "Charta charitatis, liber usuum et institut. Ordinis S. Bernardi. M.S." At the bottom of the spine a label with the handwritten modern number "1280".
