In Spanish., Script: Written well above the lines in a bold and round Southern Gothica Textualis Formata with typical Spanish features. The scribe added decorative designs in upper and lower margins., The illumination consists of 7- to 10-line initials on a square background (ff. 2v , 10v, 25r, 27r, 28v) and the following pictures: f. 1v, full-page miniature showing a couple and their five children in adoration for the Virgin in the Sun, in a decorative frame; f. 2r, full-page miniature, showing a victorious king (Philip II) on horseback, with his army in the background, trampling upon a defeated enemy; below is an oval shield containing three rocks and three trees, the whole in a decorative frame; f. 6r (Alonso Perez, witness), 10-line historiated initial with St. Alphonsus; f. 8r (Alonso Martin Garrido, witness), 9-line historiated initial with St. Alphonsus; f. 17r (Hernando Verdugo, witness), 9-line historiated initial with the Holy Spirit as a dove; f. 20v (Francisco de Robles), 9-line historiated initial with St. Francis receiving the stigmata., and Binding: Red velvet over cardboard. The pastedowns are two large engravings, one picturing the Beatitudes, the other the Creed.

In Spanish., Script: Part I (ff. 3-13): Round gothic script by a single scribe. Part II (ff. 19-74): Written in various cursive hands., Folios 1v and 2r have crudely illuminated full-page miniatures, 17th century. Folio 1v: members of the Rodriguez family offering prayers to the Madonna and Child. Folio 2r: arms of the Tinagero Rodriguez de la Escalera family. Crude decorative border on f. 3v and REY (in gold, outlined in black) may be later additions., Many of the documents included appear to have once been folded. Some loss of text due to trimming., and Binding: Eighteenth century (?). Thin wooden boards covered with dark brown leather, flesh side out. Vermilion and green ribbon fastenings.

Acquired from L. C. Witten in 1954 by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Rigid vellum binding, gold-tooled. Traces of turn-ins and bosses from earlier binding on f. 130 and possibly on f. 1., One large illuminated initial, f. 3r, 9-line, pink with white highlights on irregular angular ground, blue with white filigree and a thin white line outlining the ground. Filled with a stylized interlacing pattern of white vine-stem, white with green and yellow shading against gold ground. Numerous small initials, 3-line, yellow, on blue or blue and pink grounds with white filigree. Initial heading in gold; running headlines for book numbers in red., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-2, palimpsest): Written by several scribes in humanistic bookhand; for the passages from Seneca, the initial letter for each verse is set between vertical bounding lines. Part II (ff. 3-130): Written by a single scribe, below top line, in humanistic bookhand that sits somewhat above the ruled line; the conclusion of the text on ff. 129v-130r was added by a different hand.

MSS 1465"., Initials, 5- to 2-line, ff. 1r, 39v, 71r (space for additional initials on ff. 105v and 149r), gold edged in black with white-vine ornament, against crimson, green and light blue; white-vine extensions in upper and inner margins. On f. 1r a coat of arms in lower margin surrounded by a wreath with a ribbon. 3-, 2-, and 1-line initials in red or blue. Rubrics throughout., Script: Written in humanistic bookhand below the top line by two persons: Scribe 1) ff. 1r-128r and 149r-191v; Scribe 2) ff. 129r-148v and 192r-207v., and Water damage has obliterated several words in the lower left of f. 1r.

Binding: ca. 1500, Belgium. Covered in brown calf with corner tongues over wooden boards, a central panel diapered with blind-tooled triple fillets. Center and corner fittings and title written in a careful gothic bookhand under a brass-framed window on the upper board: "liber gloriose uirginis et martyris christi barbare". Lower board cut in for the straps which are attached with metal plates. Hasps of a chain on the lower board. Rebacked. and Script: Written in a regular heavy hybrida formata script with features of bastarda by a single scribe who placed small circular flourishes above the letter u.

Witten who sold it in the same year to Thomas E. Marston., Script: Written in round humanistic bookhand by two scribes who use somewhat different physical formats. Scribe I) ff. 1r-16r, written above top line, with initials for paragraphs set apart from the text between outer vertical bounding lines. Scribe 2) ff. 16v-26v, written below top line and leaving blank the final line of written space., and Two illuminated initials on ff. 1r and 2r, 5-line and 3-line, gold on blue, green and pale mauve ground with white vine-stem ornament and grey-green dots. On f. 1r vine-stem ornament on blue ground extends into inner margin (3-lines) to form partial border. Possibly by the same artist who executed the initials in Marston MS 257.

In French., Watermarks: similar to Briquet Armoires: Trois fleurs de lis 1741., Script: Written in neat batarde script by Hellin de Burchgrave., Ten half-page miniatures, each in an arched frame composed of two thin bands, gold and red highlighted with white, edged in black, the arch with tiny cusps; beneath, initials, 6-, 4-, or 3-line, blue or blue and red with white highlights on a gold ground of irregular shape conforming to the letter, edged in black, with serifs protruding into the left margin; filled with green and/or red and crimson trilobe leaves on curling stems with white and/or yellow highlights, or with a blue, green, crimson, and gold diapered ground with white highlights. Three smaller miniatures, 12- or 14-line, occasionally cut off at the upper edge so as to fill only part of a line of text; frames rectilinear, otherwise identical to those described above, Beneath, 2-line initials, blue, with white highlights, filled with trilobe leaves, as above, once (f. 25r) with one leaf of spiky acanthus added, and once (f. 256r) with a pink ground with gold filigree. There is a blank space on f. 27r for another miniature of this type. Other decoration consists of 2-line calligraphic initials, paragraph marks, line fillers (spirals and heraldic dragons), page and chapter headings, all executed in red. The first one or two lines of some books (as well as occasional lines within the text) are underlined in red., A few folios have tears in the margins., and Binding: Eighteenth century. Spattered and gilt edges. Red goatskin, gold-tooled, with the arms of Eugene of Savoy on cover and his monogram on spine.
