Possibly bound by one of the Bozerians (Paris, 1793-1817), but the foot of the spine where their signature usually appears was destroyed in rebacking. Gilt edges.

Manuscript, in a single hand with many corrections , excisions, and pasted-in additions, of a diary recording a journey to Belgium coinciding with the Battle of Waterloo. The author, traveling with her brother John and sister Jane, as well as Sir Neil Campbell, Knight of Elba; Major Wiley, aide-de-camp to the Duke of Wellington; and Mr. Littleship, an English merchant, records her journey by steam packet from Ramsgate to Ostend on June 10, 1815. She describes their difficulty convincing the sentry to allow them to enter the garrison of Ostend; praises their hotel once they arrive; visits Ghent; and finds Brussels "new and amusing." She breakfasts with Major Llewellyn in Brussels two hours before the Battle of Waterloo, and the remainder of the diary consists of a description of her experience during the battle, including her and her companions' efforts to dine and sightsee without mentioning public events; their attempts to obtain information about the battle's progress; the exodus from Brussels by "masters and servants, ladies and stableboys, valets and soldiers"; and reports of the battle's outcome and After the battle, she is evacuated to the Netherlands, where she comments unfavorably on the character and habits of the Dutch inhabitants. Several weeks later, she returns to Brussels and visits Waterloo

Charlotte Ann (Waldie) Eaton (1788-1859) was a writer. In June 1815 she visited Brussels, the headquarters of Wellington's army, with her brother John and sister Jane. Her account of the battle was first published as Circumstantial Detail By a Near Observer in The Battle of Waterloo (1815). In 1817, her family published a more extended account based on her own experiences titled Narrative of a Residence in Belgium, During the Campaign of 1815, and of a Visit to the Field of Waterloo. By an Englishwoman. In 1820, after a visit to Italy, she anonymously published the popular and acclaimed Rome in the Nineteenth Century. Manuscript, in a single hand, of twelve letters written during a tour of London and addressed to "dear Elvira." In the letters, the author (Mrs. Percivall or Percival?) describes the social sights of London, including parties and dinners she attends, music she hears, and nobility she sees, including a masquerade at Somerset House where her friend dresses up as an Indian princess; a dinner which the Queen gave to the Ambassador; a military show by soldiers in Hyde Park; and, at the end of the volume, a masquerade ball in which she meets "a very agreeable gentleman." In addition, "being almost smothered with the thick air of London," she and her acquaintances take a trip into the country, where they visit Hatfield and attend a concert of music hosted by Italian marquis, where "there was an eunuch who sang." In Italian (Venetian dialect)., Script: Written by one scribe in black ink except for five lines in red; of these lines 145 and 171 are no entries, but rubrics introducing the sections dealing with the Sea of Azov and the islands of the Aegean Sea respectively. The handwriting is a small Southern Gothica Textualis Libraria under Cancelleresca influence; the latter is most apparent in the shape of the letter g and in the horizontal approach strokes at the top of the ascenders., The majuscules are heightened in red., and Damp stains have damaged and even obliterated some parts of the text, especially in its first section.

Sketchbook containing 37 watercolors done by Ellis Cornelia Knight while on board Lord Nelson's flagship the Foudroyant with Sir William and Lady Emma Hamilton in 1800. Twenty-six sketches are views taken from the ship off the coast of Sicily, under sail to Malta, and returning from Malta to Palermo. There are also sketches taken in Palermo prior to sailing, and on excursions from the ship near Syracuse. Sketch 2, for example, shows the villa of Prince Ventimiglieri in Palermo; sketch 19 shows an excursion party rowing near Syracuse. There is an index at the back of the volume

Two epistles in heroic couplets, each with an Argument and extensive prose notes keyed to line numbers, of descriptions of flora, fauna, cuisine, arts and architecture, and anecdotes on religion, customs, and history. Epistle I includes discussion of: the "riches of the Kingdom of Madura under its Hindoo Kings;" the "magnificence and sanctity of the Pagodas;" the "strong resemblance between the Hindoo and Egyptian deities." Epistle II includes: "Eulogy of Trimul Nag King of Madura before the Conquest and Division of that Kingdom by the Tartars" and other anecdotes about his palace, wives, and reign; descriptions of the Royal Gardens; "Transition to the present happy situation of the Carnatic under the British Government;" a "hint of what remains to be done for the prosperity of India;" and praise for Lord Macartney for giving "a system of life which tun'd to harmony a land of strife." Notes refer to various East India Company officials including Lords Clive and Hastings, and quote from letters by other "high persons" to Macartney
