Abstract:
A scene from Horace Walpole's Gothic novel The castle of Otranto, with the character Frederic shown flinching back in surprise and horror at the sight in front of him, his arms outstretched and his legs poised for motion. A short distance to the left stands a skeleton wrapped in a hermit's cowl, its fleshless face seen in profile within a hood as it turns toward Frederic. The skeleton stands at an altar on which a cross and an open book sit; beyond the altar is a large, ornate window decorated with quatrefoils, Gothic tracery, and coats of arms. The walls behind Frederic on the right are decorated in a similar motif

Drawing of a tall, thin vessel of indeterminate function, pale green in color and sitting upright on its ornate gold base. The opening at the top is edged with gold, below which is an image in gold of a figure riding a horse. To the right of where the base meets the rest of the vessel is a pencil annotation in Thomas Kirgate's hand indicating that this area is made of "blue glass". Presumably a depiction of an object kept by Horace Walpole in the China Room at Strawberry Hill

A preparatory sketch for an unpublished caricature illustrating a scene in a large Georgian kitchen. In front of the open hearth a bull is roasting on a spit as a large-bottomed man (Grenville) sits beside it basting the meat. The dish beneath it is inscribed 'Broad bottom dripping pan'. Other dishes around the room are labeled as are the pools of fat in the dripping pan; some legible notes include plum pudding and mock turtle

In a footnote to page 280, volume I, it notes that 'amongst Gillray's unfinished sketches for caricatures in possession of the writer [presumably Broadley, a known collector] are two very similar drawings entitled the "Broad Bottom Dripping Pan".'
