Plain initials, 3- to 2-line, in red; some embellished with simple foliate ornamentation or with human and animal grotesques (e.g., ff. 24v, 44v). Headings in red., Upper portion of f. 55 (chs. 146, 149) cut out; ff. 63v-64r (chs. 189-95) crossed out. Some staining and wear affecting text., and Binding: 19th-20th centuries. In Italian., Script: there are two main scribes: hand A copied the treatise on hippiatry in large Gothica Semitextualis Libraria; its headings are in Gothica Textualis Libraria; decorative extensions at the ascenders on the top line. Hand B, who identifies himself f. 50r as Cristofano di Piero maniscalco N., copied ff. 12r-52v, upper part, in Gothica Semitextualis Libraria. The other texts are additional and have been copied by various scribes at various moments. Folios 1r-4v have red rubrics and are decorated with 2-line flourished initials, with abundant foliate marginal extensions. Guide letters in the left margin on ff. 1r-11v., Liber marescalciae by Laurentius Rusius, a treatise in 154 chapters. The manuscript also contains a large excerpt of Giordano Ruffo's De medicina equorum in Italian translation, as well as an anonymous treatise on hippiatry in 38 chapters, and a number of remedies, prescriptions, and incantations for various diseases., and Binding: 15th century: brown leather over wooden boards. Both covers blind-tooled with frames of fillets; the central panel filled with rope tools, surrounded by a frame. Flat spine with three bands and partly lost paper label with handwritten title “[MA]SCAL[CIA] / M.S. / DI VARI”. Remnants of two decorated brass clasps attached to the rear cover. Five brass bosses on each cover (the central boss on the front cover lost).

Notes added by various hands of 14th-15th centuries., Drawings of ships, towers and merchants in ink, with added yellow, brown, green, red and blue; many diagrams. Crude 2- and 1-line initials in red, with guide-letters for rubricator showing beneath; headings in red., Repair of f. 1 with later paper; some loss of text. Repairs at outer edges on this and other folios do not affect text., and Binding: 18th-19th centuries. Rigid vellum case with paste paper back endleaf and pastedowns. Central fold of each bifolium has been reinforced with a strip of parchment.

Heightening of majuscules in yellow up to f. 27v. 3- (sometimes 4- or 5-) line flourished initials alternately in red with blue penwork and blue with red penwork, with penwork extensions in the left margin or in the intercolumnar space. Large decorated flourished initials with developed and diversified penwork (c. 7 lines) in the same colours., The upper edges damaged by moist, especially in the fold., and Binding: Fifteenth century. Half leather (red-brown goatskin, which replaces an original wider piece of leather) with unbevelled wooden boards and remnants of two clasps attached to the front cover. Bound on three white leather thongs. On the spine a paper label with the handwritten 18th-century inscription "Metam. d'Ovidi[o]". On the front board the number "45" is written in ink; on the inner side of the rear board a 5-line account in Italian, 16th century, by the same hand (?) as copied the latter part of art. 8.
