Binding: Original, yellowish pigskin over bevelled wooden boards; both covers blind-tooled with frames of fillets and rolls. Spine blind-tooled with three raised bands. Remnants of two clasps attached to the rear board, with engraved brass catches (one partly preserved) on the front board. Yellow spine., Red rubrics and red stroking of majuscules. Red initials: 1-line versals, 2-line plain initials; art. 1 opens with a 4-line initial and features several 3-line initials, all of the same type as the other ones in the manuscript., Script: Copied by two hands, both writing Gothica Textualis Formata. Hand A copied ff. 1r-8v (art. 1) in bold script with little angulariy and long ascenders and descenders; hand B copied all the other pages in Textus Semiquadratus in two sizes, with conspicable forking at the top of the ascenders, spurs, hairlines, a very short d and Southern German or Central European features such as the shape of the -orum and -arum abbreviations, the use of y for ii, etc. The texts on the inserted leaflets in art. 2 and some corrections are in Gothica Hybrida (Fractura)., and Slips of parchment with additional texts have been inserted between ff. 18-19, 33-34, 35-36.
Used as binding for Daemonolatreiae libri tres / Nicolai Remigii serenissimi ducis Lotharingiae a consiliis interioribus, & in eius ditione Lotharingica cognitoris publici, ex iudiciis capitalibus DCCCC. plus minus hominum, qui sortilegii crimen intra annos XV. in Lotharingia capite luerunt ; miris ac iucundis narrationibus, variarum naturalium quaestionum ac mysteriorum daemonicorum discussionibus, valde suaues & grati, adque sales mouendos imprimis apti.
Binding: Sixteenth century (?). The backs of the quires are cut in at the sewing stations and coarsely woven cloth stays are adhered in the center of each. Sewn on five tawed, slit straps laced into wooden boards. Endbands, sewn on vegetable fiber cores, are covered with the covering leather which is backstitched. The wooden boards are flush, or nearly so. The spine is rounded and lined with cloth extending onto the outside of the boards. Covered in dark brown calf with a diamond pattern drawn on each board with a pointed instrument. A rectangular space for a label [now missing] is cut out of the upper board near the head. There are marks of four round, brass bosses on the lower board and the remains of two strap-and-pin fastenings, the pins on the upper board. The brown calf straps are attached with metal plates. Some mold damage to the bookblock. Rebacked. Bosses and fastenings wanting., Plain initial with modest penwork designs, in red, on f. 1r. Small initials, 3- to 2-line, headings, and initial strokes, in red, throughout., Purchased in 1949 from Stonehill's by Thomas E. Marston; his gift to Yale in 1952., Script: Written by a single scribe in a neat running hand.
