Abstract:
Illuminated manuscript, in unidentified hand, containing a collection of Latin translations of Arabic medical texts. Includes texts by Abu Bakr Rhazes: Liber ad Almansorem (ff. 1r-97v); Liber divisionis (ff. 99r-131r); Antidotarium (ff. 131r-141r); Liber introductorius parvus in medicinam (ff. 143v-144v); Liber juncturarum (ff. 145r-151v); Liber puerorum (ff. 151v-154r). The first two texts are translated into Latin by Gerardus Cremonensis. Also contains text by Alguazir Abuale Zor: De curatione lapidis (ff. 141v-142v); and by Galen: Liber VI de medicinis experimentatis (ff. 154v-163r). Galen's text was translated from Greek to Arabic by a certain Joannicius and from Arabic into Latin by Farachius (Faraj ben Salim). Includes a table (ff. 163r-166r). Concludes with the Liber de lapide, ascribed to Abu Bakr Rhazes (ff. 166v-167r).

In Greek and Latin., Script: Written by two scribes in clumsily formed Greek minuscule: Scribe 1, ff. 1r-5v, 41r-42v (he signs himself brother Jacobus on f. 42r); Scribe 2, ff. 6r-39r (an unusually large and thick script). Latin added on ff. 39v-41r in gothic cursive of 15th or 16th century. Marginal notes in Greek by various later hands., Initials very crudely done, in various styles and several shades of red. Rubrics throughout. Some scribblings in the margins, including a cow on f. 25v., Folios 1, 2, 3, 41, and 42 are all torn, so that significant portions of the text are missing., and Binding: Nineteenth century. In Latin., Script: Artt. 1-5 written by a single hand in a small and highly abbreviated Humanistica Cursiva Currens. Art. 6 is added in red ink on unruled pages by another contemporary hand writing Humanistica Cursiva Currens close to Humanistica Textualis., The decoration is uneven (parts are undecorated) and consists of chapter headings, plain initials and paragraph marks in red. Heightening in red of some capitals. Logical diagrams on ff. 7v, 8r, 8v, 9r, 9v. Titles are missing on ff. 2r, 59r (?), 65v (?), 69r (?)., and Binding: Twentieth century. Marbled paper over cardboard. In the Rosenthal typewritten description the binding was still described as "old boards".

In Latin., Watermarks: similar to Briquet Huchet 7693., Script: Written by a single scribe in various styles of italic script; heavy annotations by the scribe and later hands., Several crude initials: f. 1r, 4-line gold initial on blue ground, infilled red, and 3-line red initial on gold ground; on f. 2r, 5-line red initial on blue ground; f. 72v, 4-line red initial on green ground with some flourishes and gold dots, infilled blue. In Latin., Script: Written by Ieronimo Sandei in fere-humanistica for the introduction and rubrics, and in humanistic cursive for the text., Historiated initial on f. 3r, 9-line, St. George and the dragon, curling foliage, mauve, red, and green, with gold and white and yellow highlights, on gold ground, edged in black, in a loose and painterly style. 3- and 2-line initials, blue or red with elaborate red or light purple penwork respectively. Paragraph marks in red or blue. Rubrics throughout., and Binding: 17th-18th centuries. Covered in brown leather, blind-tooled with concentric borders. Four clasp-and-catch fastenings. In Latin., Script: Written by one person in round gothic bookhand; additions by a later hand., Small plain initials, in red, mark beginning of each section; headings, paragraph marks, some strokes on initials in red., and Binding: Fifteenth century. Sewn on two tawed, slit straps laid in a channel and nailed in square, flush wooden boards. The spine is square. Covered in reddish brown leather with corner turn-in tongues. Decorated with a blind-tooled panel of interlaced rope work and green dots in circles inside concentric borders. A catch on the lower board and a cloth strap (velvet?) attached to the upper with star-headed nails. Strap wanting, otherwise intact.

The decoration is uneven and differs from section to section. Artt. 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 have headings in red ink, red heightening of majuscules, red paragraph marks and red plain initials (plain and unusual flourished initials in red in art. 3) of various sizes. Artt. 2, 4 and 5-8 may have yellow heightening of majuscules too. No initials or paragraph marks in art. 8. Artt. 9-11 have red plain initials up to f. 81v; after that blank spaces with guide-letters; headings are missing after f. 67r. Artt. 2, 4, 12, 13, 14 have almost no decoration. Running headlines (author names) in large Southern Gothica Textualis Formata on pages of artt. 1, 3, 5 and 6., Binding: Nineteenth-century. Damaged half linen, the pasteboard covers covered with red paper impressed with a spiky lozenge pattern in black. Removed and rebound in purple paper. This incomplete manuscript consists of a series of more or less independent sections. An unusual feature is the writing of text parts in the lower margins as if they were catchwords. Leaves are missing, and many texts are consequently incomplete. Many pages spoilt by the acidity of the ink. Apparently copied by four different hands, mostly very unstable and looking different depending on the period during which they entered the various sections. A (ff. 1r-54v = artt. 1-8 and ff. 107v-108v = art. 14) writes peculiar forms of Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria, which if written rapidly (Currens) tends to become a Cursiva with more pronounced Gothic features, especially in the additional artt. 2, 4 and 14; typical is the unusual abbreviation for in in the shape of dotted i. B (ff. 55r-66v = art. 9) writes Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria, equally under Gothic influence. C (ff. 67r-98v = artt. 10-11) writes a small sloping Gothico-Antiqua Currens. D (ff. 99r-105r = art. 12) writes a Humanistica Cursiva Libraria under Gothic influence; a deviant form D' is seen on ff. 106r-107r = art. 13., and Modern foliation followed. Wanting ff. 71-72.
