On the right, an old gentleman with wooden left leg stands between a tree and a mile marker trying to conceal with the spread tails of his coat an old, obese lady hiding behind him in a half-crouching position. The driver of a phaeton brings his horse to an abrupt stop just in front of the pair. He casts an amused glance at the viewer while pointing to the pair with his whip. The marker reads "XXI miles from London."

"An elderly couple in a gig which backs on to the pavement of a country town, against the bow-window of a 'China Warehouse'. Under the wheels are large earthenware vessels which stood outside the shop. A furious couple come out of the shop-door, above which is a board: 'Bob. Brittle china Glass and Earthenware Shop. A savage dog leaps barking at the terrified horse, the fat woman in the gig screams, the man shouts at the horse. A detached house has a sign: 'Probe Surgeon'. Next it is a church. A lady with an enormous coiffure surmounted by hat with huge ostrich feathers brandishes a long whip as she drives her phaeton behind a pair of diminutive horses. The carriage is elevated on very high springs, and on its side bears a ducal coronet (a possible allusion to the Duchess of Devonshire) and the motto "Swift".
