Manuscript on paper of Ovid, Metamorphoses. With Lactantian tituli and narrationes in margins.
Description:
Binding: Fifteenth century, Germany. Adhered vellum stays on the inside of the quires. Original wound sewing on three wide, tawed skin, slit straps laced through tunnels in the edges of beech boards to channels on the outside and pegged. Natural color endbands, caught up on the spine, are sewn to tawed cores laced into grooves on the outside of the boards. Front pastedown: reused paper manuscript with text side pasted face down. Quarter bound in blue, tawed skin with a strip, now wanting, nailed along the edge. Two leaf-shaped catches with three five-petalled flowers on them on the lower board and the upper one cut in for kermes pink straps attached with metal plates; damage from a chain fastening at the head of this board, and the board broken; outer edge wanting. Title, in same (?) hand as on f. 1r, on upper and lower boards: "Ouidius methamorphoseos.", Plain red 5-line initial, in outline only, f. 3r; two smaller initials of similar style, ff. 3v-4r. First letter of each verse stroked with red, ff. 3r-4r. Spaces left for decorative initials remain unfilled elsewhere in codex., Purchased from C. A. Stonehill in 1949 by Thomas E. Marston., Script: Written in a small neat gothic text hand with hybrida features., and Watermarks: unidentified bull's head and mountain.

Manuscript on paper of Iohannes de Virgilio (Giovanni del Virgilio, 1300-1350), Allegoriae librorum Ovidii Metamorphoseos, in prose and verse.
Description:
Binding: Fifteenth century. Brown leather (sheepskin?) over cardboard (replacing worm-eaten wooden boards), blind-tooled with a frame of fillets and rolls; in the central panel a motif made of small rhomboid stamps. Parchment front pastedown. Remnants or marks of four clasps attached to the front cover., Copied by one hand in extremely small Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria. In the poetical sections the majuscules at the opening of each verse are set apart., Headings (“liber secundus” etc.) in clumsy Capitalis (several times erroneous: “LIBE”). Space for a 2-line initial left free on the first line of f. 1r, although this is not the beginning of the text., and Watermark: tower, var. Piccard, Turmwasserzeichen 611-613; var. Briquet, 15911?.

Belonged to Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 9033). Sold by W. H. Robinson to H. P. Kraus, from whom it was purchased in 1955 by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: Nineteenth century. Sewing, possibly original, on four kermes pink slit straps. Plain, wound endbands on tawed skin cores. Tan blind-tooled goatskin over wooden boards, also possibly original as they are cut in for the straps. Title gold-tooled on spine: "Ovidii Metam./ Saec. XV. M. S. in memb"., Script: Written by at least three scribes in scripts ranging from late caroline minuscule to early gothic bookhand, all above top line. Interlinear and marginal annotations and running headlines by several hands, 13th-15th centuries., and Two illuminated initials, f. 1r, severely damaged: 21-line initial I for first verse of art. 2 incorporates an elongated grotesque, originally purple, red, blue, and green on gold ground; 4-line initial at beginning of art. 1, gold on red ground with center totally effaced. 8-line initial for Bk. 2, f. 8v, gold on blue (?) ground, now rubbed: inhabited by winged grotesque biting its back with intertwining foliage in blue, green, orange and mauve on gold and red ground. Books 3-15 have attractive penwork initials divided red and medium blue with designs in both colors, ascenders and descenders often sweeping far into margins. Headings and paragraph marks in red. First letter of each verse (either set apart from text block between the first and second or placed directly on the second vertical bounding line) stroked with yellow.

Binding: Twentieth century. Quarter binding, white parchment and brown paper. Red edges pertaining to a preceding binding., Blank space for a heading above art. 2; red final note on f. 6r. Red stroking of all majuscules. Gothic plain initials in red, 4-line at the head of art. 1, 2-line at the head of art. 2. Large guide letters at the left of the initials., On the originally blank f. 6v a later hand has written notes in a very rapid Gothica Cursiva most difficult to decipher., and Script: Copied by one hand in Humanistica Cursiva under Gothic influence and of low quality.

Description:
Binding: Binding of cardboard covered with fragments of a large 12th-century Italian manuscript on parchment containing the Passion of Abdon and Sennen, into which the Passion of Olympiades and Maximus is incorporated. Copied in large Southern Praegothica Formata; the text opens with a red initial. The title “OVIDIUS”, preceded by a floweret, is written in ink in large capitals on the lower edge of the codex., Red paragraph marks on ff. 1r-10v and 188v-189v. Spaces for headings blank. In art. 1 spaces for initials (5-11 lines) at the beginning of each Book and also on f. 10v (Metam. 1.583); the initials are not executed., and Script: Copied by one hand in a rather irregular Humanistica Libraria of an exceptional type: Textualis with f and long s descending below the line. Opening lines of Book 1 in Capitalis.

Marston., Script: Latin text written in a round humanistic script much influenced by printing; Scribe 1) ff. 1v-21v and Scribe 2) ff. 22r-36r. French text written in upright batarde; Scribe 1) ff. 2r-22r and Scribe 2) ff. 22r-36r (a more flamboyant style of script)., and Two initials, one at beginning of Latin text (2-line), the other at the beginning of French text (3-line), respectively gold on blue square ground with gold filigree and gold on dark red square ground with gold filigree. Most stanzas introduced by paragraph marks in gold on blue or red alternating grounds, with gold filigree. First letter of each verse stroked with yellow, as are usually majuscules in text. Headings on ff. 1v and 2r in red.

Manuscript on paper of 1) Iacobus de Cessolis OP (d. after 1322), Libellus de moribus hominum et officiis nobilium super ludo scaccorum. 2) A largely fabulous and incoherent history of the Roman empire up to the siege of Rome by the Moslems in 846. 3) Alphabetical index to artt. 1-2, referring to the number of the book as indicated by the running headlines, and the number of the chapter as indicated by numbers in the margin, by Dominicus de Dominicis OCarm, bishop of Sitia in Crete (1395-1399). 4) Alphabetical index to art. 5, referring to the number of the book and of the Metamorphose, by the same author as art. 3. 5) Iohannes de Virgilio (Giovanni del Virgilio, 1300-1350), Allegoriae librorum Ovidii Metamorphoseos, the prose parts only; instead of the poetical parts, there are excerpts from the Narrationes fabularum Ovidiarum by Lactantius Placidus (dates unknown) and perhaps from other sources. 6) Historia septem sapientum Romae. 7) De vita et moribus philosophorum, generally ascribed to Gualterus Burlaeus (Walter Burley, 1275-after 1344).

Quarter binding: brownish parchment and uncovered heavy paper boards On the spine is written in ink "Tedesco"., Script: Most of the text is apparently written by four different hands, all using Gothica Cursiva Libraria: hand A copied ff. 1r-39r, hand B ff. 49r-60v, hand C ff. 61r-80v, hand D ff. 85r-117r. The indexes (artt. 3-4), slovenly copied in Gothica Cursiva Currens on blank pages in quire IV, are younger than the text and difficult to decipher. The same hand seems to have written the running headlines in artt. 1 and 5 and the foliation in art. 7., Simple decoration consisting of red headings and red paragraph marks. In artt. 1-2 2-line plain red initials (3-line at the opening, f. 1r); in artt. 5-7 2-line plain initials with rudimentary flourishing (often consisting of dots), all in red; the opening initials of artt. 5 and 7 are 3-line initials; a human face has been drawn in the initial on f. 51r. Guide letters. Red stroking of majuscules on ff. 49r-85r only., and There is early foliation from "f. 1" to "f. 32" in the center of the upper margin of ff. 85r-116r; the numbers are repeated on the verso and are to be understood in the modern sense, being valid for recto and subsequent verso. Many pages are blank.
