Description:
Belonged to Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 3384). Purchased in 1956 from L. C. Witten by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: ca. 1500, Italy. Original sewing on three tawed skin, slit straps laid in channels on the outside of wooden boards. Gilt edges. The secondary, beaded endband is cream and green. Covered in reddish brown goatskin, blind-tooled with a floral border and fleurons in a central panel. Name of owner is gold-tooled on side in Roman letters that have been modified to form Greek letters. Spine: triple fillets at head and tail; single fillet diapering in the panels. Gold tooling added later. Traces of two fastenings, the catches on the lower board; the upper board heavily cut in for clasps. Modern title on spine: "Guarini Lexicon Ineditum. MS. in membranis"., and The decoration consists of an illuminated title page, with full border, thin white vine-stem ornament with stylized foliage in red, pink, blue against blue, green and pink ground with white dots and gold balls. In outer border two vases, blue with white highlights, and three roundels framed in red, green or pink with Roman profile heads wearing fillets against blue or gold ground. In inner border foliage curling around a thin gold bar. The upper border consists of a garland, green with gold highlights, tied with red ribbons against a blue and gold ground with two masks, one spouting water. Unidentified arms (palm? tree on red ground) in center of lower border. Large illuminated initial, 12-line, gold against a predominately blue ground with some green, pink, red and gold, and sprouting vine-stem ornament, white with pale brown shading and stylized foliage in red, pink and light brown. 25 illuminated initials for letters of Greek alphabet, 6- to 5-line, gold, against blue, green and dark pink grounds with stylized white vine-stem ornament or white stylized foliage. 2 small illuminated initials (ff. 205v and 206r), 3-line, gold against blue, red and green ground with pale yellow and white dots and white filigree. Heading on f. 1r in blue; others in red. Plain initials in red.

Description:
Binding: Nineteenth century (?). Parchment over pasteboard. On the flat spine the handwritten 19th century inscription: "Regulae S. Benedicti et Kalendarium antiquum M.S.", Headings in red. Plain initials in red of various sizes (mostly 2-3 lines), sometimes with penwork decoration in the same colour (on f. 29 r in an initial a human head is drawn). On f. 4r the text of art. 1 opens with a 6-line zoomorphic initial "M" with two birds on a rectangular background. On f. 1r its preface opens with a 10-line historiated initial "A" , depicting St. Benedict explaining his rule to a monk, on a rectangular background. Both initials are in liquid gold, red, ocre and blue, and are followed by large display script in red, blue and ocre., Script: Copied by various hands, all writing Southern Praegothica. In art. 1 the changes of hands and layout often go together with the appearance of singletons, different layout and bad textual connection between successive pages and deserve a close analysis. In the Obituary (art. 6) the entries are added by many different, sometimes informal hands., and The lower margin of f. 25 and the outer margin of f. 58 are replaced with modern parchment.

Description:
Binding: 15th-16th centuries. Parchment over light wooden boards; leather spine with three raised bands; marks of two clasps. At the top of the rear board there is an excavation for the staple to which a chain was attached. On the spine parchment label with the handwritten title (19th century?) “JOHANNES HEROLT / Sermones Discipuli / De Tempore / saec. XV. 1436.” At the top of the rear cover close to the spine a printed paper label containing space for a shelfmark covering a large capital “W”; the handwritten shelfmark is “5867”., Leaves are badly waterstained in the outer lower corner in the second half of the manuscript., Red stroking of majuscules and underlining, red plain generally 3-line initials., and Script: Copied probably by one scribe writing Gothica Cursiva Libraria. When the first letter on a page is a majuscule it is as a rule made larger, with some calligraphic development.

Binding: Date?, Italy? Backs of quires cut in for sewing. Plain limp vellum case with holes in each cover for two ribbons., Crude penwork initials on f. 1r in red and blue, 3-line. The first incorporates a five-pointed star in red, with blue dots, and terminates with a full-length marginal border in inner margin. The second incorporates a fleur-de-lis. Other plain initials in red and/or blue throughout. Headings and strokes on paragraph marks and majuscules in red., and Script: Written by a single scribe in small, cramped and highly abbreviated gothic cursive. Art. 6 added by two different hands.
