"A stage-coach is driven (left to right) uphill at a gallop, the horses having human heads as in BMSat 7323. The arm of a signpost on the extreme left points 'To the Temple of Honor'. Thurlow drives, lashing furiously. George III, in profile to the right, is seated in the boot at the back of the coach holding a musket with a fixed bayonet. The Queen sits on the roof as an outside passenger, dressed as an old market-woman ; she holds a basket of 'Golden Eggs' on her knee, and another basket at her side in which is a goose which hisses at the King. Within the coach Hastings (left) and Mrs. Hastings (right) sit facing each other; he is in oriental dress; she wears a jewelled turban with a crown, and her neck is covered with jewels. The coach is 'Licens'd by Royal Authority'; on its panel are the royal arms. On the box under Thurlow's legs are a star and ribbon, a coronet, and feathers. The leaders have the faces of Pitt1 and Sydney, the wheelers are Dundas and Pepper Arden. The new ministry is depicted on a large carousel, erected in front of the "Crown and Royal Bob" Inn. The structure is supported by a center pole held in place by pegs labelled "Treasury," "Navy" and "Army" terminating at the top with the head of the King in the form of a wig block. Fox, with a fox's head and tail, leads the procession, holding a bag of money. Behind him, Lord North on a horse with its legs cut short, loses his wig; Burke in Jesuit's habit and on a similarly lame horse, has partially turned into a skeleton due to his economical reform; Admiral Keppel behind him is desperate to remain seated on his donkey. Lastly a Scotsman labelled "President" signifies Scottish influence over the Crown. Watching from a seat before the Inn, a complacent John Bull mouths slogans of liberty, unaware that his house is being plundered behind him

The interior of the 'Cave of Despair', with demons put to flight by a ray of divine light from the letters 'I A H' in a triangle in the upper left corner of the design. Three wizards (right) in monkish robes tend a boiling cauldron inscribed: 'Eye of Straw & toe of Cade ... For the ingredients of our cauldron'. Facing them (right) sits the Devil enthroned, holding a trident, with a three-headed scaly monster beside him; he says: "Pour in Streams of Regal Blood Then the Charm is firm & good." Burning pamphlets feed the fire under the cauldron; they are being heaped up by Horne Tooke, from whose mouth issues a label: 'H - T. Tis time tis time tis time'. The next, stirring the contents, says "Thrice! and Twice King's Heads have fallen". The third (? Dr. Towers), [Perhaps Dr. Parr; Towers died 20 May 1799.] flourishing a broom-stick, says, "Thrice the Gallic Wolves have bayed"; he holds an open book: 'Lying Whore \ False Swearing'. Behind the wizards is a procession of the Opposition. The first three (abreast) are Bedford, Norfolk, and Lord Derby. They say respectively: "Where are they! - gone Pocketed the Church and Poorlands The Tythes next" ..."Oh fallen Sovereingty degraded Counseller" ...; "Poor joe is done No test or Corporation Acts" ... The next three are Fox, Erskine, and Tierney; they say respectively: "Where can I hide my secluded Head" ... "Ah woe is me - poor I" ... "Would I had never spoke of the Licentiousness of the Press". Behind them is Burdett, saying, "What can I report to my Friends at the Bastile" .... Behind there is an undifferentiated crowd entering the cave and headed by Thelwall holding a volume of 'Thelwalls Lectures' ... exclaiming, "Tm off to Monmouthshire". The procession is watched by a snaky monster (left). Above their heads and resting on clouds are small figures: the King, allegorically depicted, holding a serpent in each hand. Behind him are Pitt, saying, "Suspend their Bodies", (?) Grenville, (?) Windham, saying "Almighty God has been pleased to grant us a great Victory", and Kenyon, saying "Take them to the Kings Bench & Cold Bath fields" ... "George III (three-quarter length) stands in profile to the left, nearsightedly examining an oval miniature of Oliver Cromwell by the light of a candle held in his left hand. The half length, looking to the right, in armour, probably derives from the pl. after Cooper in Mechell's ed. of Rapin's 'History', 1733. The candlestick is of massive plate holding a candle-end supported on a save-all (cf. BMSat 8091). "Pitt, Hastings, and Thurlow sit at a circular dinner-table on which is the King's head in a large dish. The dish is ornamented with a crown and the words 'Mal. y . Pense'. Pitt (left) sits in profile to the right cutting off a piece of the tongue with a knife and fork. Thurlow, in his Chancellor's wig and gown, faces him, using two large spoons greedily (cf. BMSat 7166), he is taking brains from a hole in the King's forehead. Hastings, in oriental dress, sits between them gouging out an eye with a spoon and fork. "The royal party on board a vessel which, though the sail is inscribed 'Southampton Frigate', resembles a fishing-vessel. They are seated in the stern in the worst throes of sea-sickness: the King (centre), his hat tied on with a handkerchief, clasps his stomach. One of the princesses, holding a smelling-bottle, supports the Queen. The helmsman is impeded by a fat lady who drinks from a bottle. A princess (left) droops despairingly, another (right) appeals to Heaven for mercy. A sailor (left) carries off a bucket, holding his nose. "George III (l.), just risen from the throne, kicks Grenville from the presence, holding him by the pigtail, and raising the sceptre to smite. Other members of the Ministry flee in confusion, their gestures showing that they also have been kicked. The Kings head, as a sign of respect, is hidden by a pillar in heavy shadow which supports the voluminous canopy over the throne, itself in full light. A large label floats from the King: " - what! - what! - bring in the Papists! - O you cunning Jesuits, you! - what you thought I was like little-Boney & would turn Turk, or any thing? - but if You have no Faith or Conscience - I have!! - ay, & a little Old Protestant Spunk too! - So Out with you all!! - out! - with all your Broad-bottom'd- Popish Plots!!! - Out with you - out! - out! - out!" Grenville wears peer's robes, which fly back, exposing his heavy posteriors (cf. BMSat 10530) to the King's toe. He drops a long scroll: 'Catholic Bill - for bringing the Papists into Power & supporting the Broad bottom Jesuits in their Places for securing the Papists in commanding of the Army & Navy & all the Public offices - .' This tears as it floats over the shoulder of Howick, the mover of the Bill. Grenville is propelled against the massive Ellenborough, who hurries forward with a savage backward glare. The spectacled Buckingham looks up at his brother in dismay. Temple, huge and globular, waddles off, feeling his damaged back. In front of him, Sheridan, as Harlequin (cf. BMSat 9916), slinks off stooping low. In the foreground Petty and Erskine lie on their backs, legs in the air, both in their gowns, Erskine having dropped the Purse of the Great Seal. Behind the nearer figures are (l. to r.): Windham, Moira with both arms raised, and Lauderdale, looking to the left.; next, Sidmouth in full flight, and on the extreme right. a head identified by Miss Banks as Fitzpatrick, but resembling Gillray's Adair. On the back of the throne within a wreath: 'G 3d/ R.' On its r., and on the extreme left., is a stool which supports a cushion on which rest a large 'Bible' and a crown. "George III and Queen Charlotte stand before the open gate of the Treasury, from which Pitt has just wheeled a barrow laden with money-bags. Pitt, the straps of the barrow round his shoulders, his coat-pocket bulging with guineas, obsequiously hands the king a money-bag. George III stands full-face, legs astride, a money-bag inscribed '£100000' under his right arm, another in his right hand and all his pockets overflowing with guineas. Queen Charlotte (left) stands on his right taking a pinch of snuff, and looking up at him with a smile of greedy and satisfied cunning; in her apron is a heap of guineas. Military officers wearing high cocked hats with feather trimmings (in a French fashion), and long pigtail queues, stand round the King and Queen, in a semicircle, in front of the spiked gates of the Treasury, playing musical instruments: fifes, bassoons, a horn, &c. The pockets of the two in the foreground (left and right) are crammed with guineas, those of the others, presumably equally full, are concealed. They represent the placemen and Ministerialists of the Treasury Bench. The most prominent (right) is probably Lord Sydney. In the foreground (left) an old sailor, armless and with two wooden legs, sits on the ground, his empty hat before him. On the right the Prince of Wales, in rags, hesitates to take a paper inscribed 'Accept £200000 from your Friend Orleans', which a slim and foppish Frenchman, in bag-wig and 'chapeau-bras', standing on the extreme right, offers him, taking his hand. He is very different from the heavily built Due d'Orléans (who succeeded his father in Nov. 1785) who had recently presented his portrait by Reynolds (now at Hampton Court) to the Prince of Wales. In a room reminiscent of a magician's study, the King, dressed in a cloak as Friar Bacon (a necromancer of popular fable), evokes visions of the royal power while the brazen head speaks. Each vision is represented by a large medallion inscribed, "Constitution," and shows a different balance of power between the king and both houses of Parliament. On the left, Fox, Burke, and North, peek in through an open door, appearing alarmed. On the right, a number of men walk down the "back stairs." The first of them, carrying a conspirator's lantern and led by the devil, is Lord Temple

"The reduction of the Prince of Wales's establishment at Carlton House is represented as the auction scene in 'The School for Scandal' (iv. 1). 'Lot 1', a portrait of the King and Queen, as a farmer and his wife, a copy of BMSat 6934 reversed, is being held up for sale by (?) Sheridan. The Prince, as Charles Surface, stands in the middle of the room, legs apart, his cane raised above his head, right hand in his breeches-pocket, saying, "Careless, Knock down the Farmer". George Hanger as Careless stands in a high-backed arm-chair (right), his hammer raised above his head, saying, "Going for no more than One Crown". Weltje, a stout man, stands beside the rostrum, his arms folded, looking down at a pile of plate at his feet inscribed 'Lot 6'. On the left stand three men: the bidder, pencil and note-book in his hand, saying, "Five shillings for that Lot", and two military officers, one stout, the other slim and foppish, looking through an eye-glass at the picture. 'Lot 2' and 'Lot 3' are pictures still on the wall, Three quarter length portraits of Mrs. Fitzherbert, her hands in a muff, and a lady wearing a large feathered hat, perhaps the Duchess of Devonshire, cf. BMSat 6961, &c. 'Lot 5' is a saddle on the floor beside a pair of top-boots.
