- Description:
- Binding: Early quarter binding, undecorated ... leather and beech boards. Spine with three raised bands and remnants of a printed paper title label: "[Tr]attato / della Vit[a] / Cristian[a] / di F. / Simone / da Casci[a]". Remnants of one clasp, attached to the rear board. On the front board the large 18th century (?) pressmark written in black ink "25.", In art. 2 red headings, heightening of majuscules and 2- or 3-line plain initials in the same colour, with guide letters; some initials have a slight penwork decoration. The additional texts are not decorated., Original foliation in Arabic numerals. Quires strengthened at inner and outer sides by means of parchments stays, cut from an erased manuscript., and Script: Art. 2 is copied by one hand in Gothica Cursiva Libraria/Formata (Cancelleresca). The scribe Agniolo Donati is unrecorded. A slightly later hand copied the additional art. 1 in Gothica Cursiva Libraria. Art. 3 was added by a hand writing a rapid Gothica Cursiva Libraria/Currens difficult to decipher.

- Binding: Date? The covers are wanting but were probably of limp vellum. Original sewing on twisted tawed skin, slit ribbons, the sewing beaded in the center. A fragment of a parchment bifolium from a 14th-century breviary (mostly rubbed and illegible) is glued to the spine and cut out for the sewing supports; a portion of the fragment extends along the front and back of the text block., Fine flourished initial, 5-line, divided red and blue, with penwork designs in both colors and long marginal tail of letter Q, f. 1r. Smaller flourished initials incorporating the heads of bird-like grotesques and cross-hatching designs. 1-line initials alternate red and blue for chapter lists. Paragraph marks and running headlines in red and blue. Rubrics throughout; instructions for rubricator along outer edges of leaves, some perpendicular to text., Parchment, ff. i (early parchment flyleaf) + 138 (medieval foliation i-l begins on f. 2)., Purchased from Enzo Ferrajoli in Geneva in 1957 by L. C. Witten, who sold it the same year to Thomas E. Marston., and Script: Written in small gothic bookhand, below top line.

- Binding: Quarter binding of bevelled wooden boards (worm-eaten) and brown leather; spine with three raised bands and paper title label with handwritten 17th-century inscription: “Vita / di S. / Girola.” On the boards marks of one clasp attached to the front board and on the front board the ca. 1800 inscription “JO.” written in black ink. Possibly the binding once belonged to another manuscript., Collection of Bernard M. Rosenthal (MS 38). Purchased from him on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund., Description follow modern foliation which includes two preliminary leaves.., Headings in pale red, often difficult to read. Yellow heightening of the majuscules. Initials, with guide letters written in the space reserved for the initial: (1) flourished initials (3-4 lines) in red with pale red (or brown) penwork or in blue with red penwork, sometimes with marginal penwork extensions; (2) at the beginning of each text a larger initial; the letters following this type of initial are majuscules. F. 3r: 12-line blue initial of the littera duplex type with extensive penwork in red and some blue, with decorative border in the same colours in the inner and lower margin and tendrils in the other margins containing flowers and acorns; the border of the lower margin terminates in a medallion containing a coat of arms; ff. 8r, 41r: 9-line initial of the same type and in the same colours; f. 47v: 6-line, idem; f. 77v: 7-line black initial., Script: Copied by one hand in a peculiar form of Southern Gothica Textualis Libraria under Humanistic influence as visible in the total lack of compression; special features are: the sloping hairline at the top of the second stroke of e, parallelled by the sloping stroke on i; h with exceptionally long curved extension under the baseline; the forked lower ending of f and straight s on or under the baseline and the forked descender of p; and the very fancy majuscules., and The lower margin of f. 62 torn off.

The presence of the "versificatore" (f. 11r), cited in Latin (Walther, Sprichwoerter 33507), and a similar constellation of sources suggest that Vincent of Beauvais' Speculum Doctrinale was a major (though not exclusive) source for this author.

The opening majuscules of paragraphs protrude into the margin.
