Abstract:
"A small ugly man trots (left to right) deprecatingly beside his wife, a large, over-dressed, scowling termagant, on their Sunday outing. He carries her umbrella, cloak, pattens, and a bundle in a check handkerchief. She holds a fan. An elderly man (right) walking in the opposite direction looks angrily at the couple; he swaggers in front of his pretty young wife, who appears pregnant and walks carrying a little girl and an umbrella. Behind them is an inn with the sign: 'The Old Swant [sic] Ordinary on Sunday'. A couple sit on a bench."--British Museum online catalogue, description of an earlier state

"A domestic interior. In the upper margin is engraved, "Give me the sweet delight of Love - a Catch", and the design illustrates the lines of the catch: "A smoky house, a failing trade, Six squalling brats, and a scolding jade." A man (full-face) stands disconsolately, his hands clasped while his virago of a wife (left) threatens him with her fist. One small child pulls his coat and points to a little brother kicking on the floor, while a rather older girl weeps with her pinafore to her eyes, and another boy blows a trumpet. This group is on the right. On the left one child clutches another by the hair. The man's toes protrude through one of his shoes, he is without breeches, and these hang from a nail on the wall (right) next his wife's hat. A parroquet sits screeching on the outside of its cage. The plaster has fallen from the wall in patches, showing bricks. A smoky fire burns in the grate (left); on the chimney-piece are tea-things."--British Museum online catalogue

The Earl Squander and a city merchant arrange the marriage of their son and daughter in a grand sitting room. The Earl, whose coronet is stamped on all his possessions, unfolds a diagram of his illustrious family tree as the alderman focuses on the marriage contract and his payment. The extravagantly dressed young groom-to-be looks at his reflection in a glass while his future bride listens intently at the lawyer's soft words. Through the window is a view of a palatial house under construction, presumably for the new couple as the plans are labelled "A Plan of the New Building of the Rt. Honble..." The walls of the room are covered with paintings of Roman and Old Testament scenes as well as the screaming face of Medusa. In the foreground on the right, two dogs are chained together, one lying down but looking out the corner of his eyes at the viewer, the other looking off to the right
