According to a note in library files, the manuscript was purchased from B. M. Rosenthal via L. C. Witten in 1958 by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: Nineteenth century. Dark brown, hard-grained goatskin, blind- and gold-tooled. Gilt edges. On spine: "Liber Bellial" and "Codex Ms. Saec. XV"., Divided initial, 15-line, in red in f. 1r. Plain initials, 10- to 4-line, initial strokes, and paragraph marks (in outer margin) in red throughout., and Script: Written in a cramped gothic cursive by a single scribe, above top line; art. 2 added in an awkwardly formed gothic bookhand.

Bookblock tacketed to a semi-limp paper case, reinforced at the spine. Handwritten paper label with title and a printed medallion with Flora (?) standing on an anchor and globe (?), both on spine., Blue initial, 6-line, with nice penwork designs, f. 1r. Smaller initials, 2-line, red with purple designs or blue with red designs, alternate throughout. Headings in pale red. Paragraph marks alternate red and blue. Later addition of arms in lower margin, f. 1r, effaced and covered with mending strips., Purchased from B. M. Rosenthal in 1959 by Thomas E. 16th-century inscription of Heinrich Schkor von Stranov on verso of front flyleaf: "1542/ diss puechle gehert zu dem Edlen vnd Vesten [?] hainrichen schkor [followed by hole in parchment] von stranoff [Stranov in Bohemia] derzait haubtman zu prukh an der layta [Bruck an der Leitha, Southeast Austria]/ 15 A 47 [sic]..."., Acquired from B. M. Rosenthal in 1959 by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: Fifteenth century, Bohemia. Sewn on three supports, with two half bands near head and tail, fastened to wooden boards. Yellow edges and kermes pink place marks. Covered in brown calf, blind-tooled with floral designs, with a central and four large corner fittings on each board. Spine: supports defined with double fillets; four leafy flower bud tools pointing inward in the two central panels. Two fastenings, the catches on the upper board and the lower one cut in for tawed skin, cream colored straps (only stubs remain). Small pieces of liturgical manuscript (Northern Italy, 14th century) used for front and rear pastedowns. Head and tail of spine and the upper joint very unobtrusively repaired., Covered in brown calf, blind-tooled with floral designs, with a central and four large corner fittings on each board., For prologues and beginning of each book partial borders constructed of a thin bar, unburnished gold, pink or green with burnished gold balls, terminating in sprays of stylized foliage, green, pink, and blue with gold accents. One large illuminated initial, f. 1r, 13-line, blue with light blue foliage shading against a red and pink ground; foliage serifs in green. 6 smaller illuminated initials, blue, pink, green or gold against blue or pink ground with white or gold filigree and/or gold crosshatching. Numerous pen-and-ink initials, 2-line, alternate in blue with red penwork designs and gold with blue penwork designs. Running titles in red and blue. Headings in red. Manuscript on paper (unidentified watermarks in gutter; upper margin, trimmed) of a Ritual, possibly written for a nunnery.
Description:
Binding: Sixteenth century. Original sewing on three double, tawed supports laced into the wooden boards. The spine is heavily rounded, with the sewing supports well defined by blind-tooled lines. Covered in dark brown calf with a panel of the Annunciation, in a border of birds, animals and flowers blind-stamped on each board inside outer frames of lines. There is a brass catch on the upper board and a long, thin brass clasp on a leather strap attached to the lower with a brass plate. The leather is slightly torn at the head of the spine but otherwise the book is in fine condition, with no trace of sophistication. Front and back pastedowns from a 15th-century Latin liturgical manuscript., Calligraphic initials, 5- to 3-line, in green or red with red or grey flourishes, often extending the length of the written area. Initials, 3- to 1-line, underlining, strokes on 1-line initials, and headings in red., and Script: Written by three people in what Lieftinck calls Littera brevitura. Scribe 1, ff. 1r-87v and 98r-153v, writes in a large and rather careless hand; 2, ff. 90r-97v, in a small even hand; 3, ff. 154r-272v, in a large uneven hand.
