"Satire on Napoleon's defeat, abdication and retirement to Elba. in a makeshift-looking room, a huge, hairy devil approaches Napoleon at right, holding a trident and proffering a noose, saying, 'Master Boney the favour of your company is requested -'; Napoleon, at left, hurriedly rising from his 'Camp stool' and pulling on his breeches, replies, 'I'll be with you in a crack'; a skeleton looms up behind him, at the same time holding back Joseph Bonaparte who tries to escape through an open door at left, his crown falling off, the skeleton apprehending him, 'Stop thief'. "A satire on King Louis XV of France accusing him of treachery showing him sitting on a throne under a canopy, his crown is held over his head by Pride on his left, a peacock in front of her, and two-faced Treachery on his right, behind whom the devil flies waving a firebrand and a Jesuit stands holding up a candle and scroll lettered “Persecution”. The king wears a black mask and the costume of a Roman general, a cloth adorned with fleur-de-lis round his legs and his sandaled feet rest on two books lettered “T[reatie]s”, a paper with the same lettering lies beside these and an open book. An obsequious courtier, a chain round his ankle attached to a book, kneels at the king’s feet as the king hands him a yoke. On the king’s other side another elegant courtier, his ankle chained to a log, exclaims “Oh! Wh(a)t a great Monarch”, a scene of “The [St Bartholomew's Day] massacre of Paris” hangs on the curtain behind the king. To the left of the canopy is an obelisk bearing the image of a weeping “Europa” with her bull and above this a medallion of the “Cat & monkey”. Around the obelisk are a Spaniard holding a rosary and kneeling in prayer before a statue, a Genoese man and a Bavarian (identified in the verses below); at their feet are the words “Here we stand for ye Glory of France”. In the sky above the Eye of Providence looks down on a pair of scales in which the British lion outweighs the French fleur-de-lis. On the right demon is about to hang Justice as a Cardinal (Tencin?) holds up a cross; beside this a man wearing a wig wooden shoes sits astride a braying donkey waves his hat and cries “Vive le Roy”. At the bottom are three scenes: [at left] three men “Burning of Treaties” and the “Pr[agmati]c S[anctio]n”; ... ; [at right] scenes of executions, torture, a village burning and a monk leading a band of troops while another holding up a cross says “one K[in]g one R[e]l[igio]n”). "Napoleon, pushing an officer before him through a pillared doorway, looks back to speak to a monk and a sansculotte, shackled together, who drag a car in which is an imperial crown. They hold a large scroll inscribed: 'Most religious Sovereign - the benefactor of the church - the patron of liberty - the scourge of tyrants, and the defender of our most holy religion; may you long fill the Imperial Chair, and diffuse over a free and happy people all the blessings of your auspicious government.' Demons fly round a tricolour flag which floats from the car. Napoleon holds out a scroll headed: 'Address, &c. &c. &c. The Legions of France congratu - ', saying, "This token of your gratitude, my dear subjects will ever stimulate me to protect your liberties - to promote your happiness - and to preserve my empire from the ravages of war, tyranny and oppression." The officer, with a cynical smile, says: "Patron of Liberty - Defender of our most holy Religion - free and happy People - Ha! ha! ha! - What may we not expect? - Has he not got them under excellent subjection?" On the left is Napoleon's 'Secret Chamber': a table is covered with maps and plans; a large map, partly unrolled, shows Europe from '[En]gland to [Tur]key', including the 'Black Sea'; another map shows 'Suez' and the 'Red Sea'. A demon under the table holds up a large pile of papers: 'Plans against England'; on the floor are similar piles: 'Religion' and 'Treaties'. There are also 'Plans against Germany and Turkey', and a paper: 'Mem. the chance of the conquest of England is worth the sacrifice of one third of the people of France. Item. As Charlemaine not only conquered Italy, but the whole of Germany, and left the Imperial dignity hereditary in the Sovereigns of France, it is indispensably necessary to obtain possession of Germany, in order to support the dignity of the Gallic empire.' On the wall are three pictures: 'Sacking of Rome', 'Dissolution of the National Assembly' [see British Museum Satires No. 9426, &c], and 'View of Cairo' [see British Museum Satires No. 9358, &c.]. Below the design: 'Explanation. The two figures bringing the Imperial crown . . . represent . . . the bitter Enemies of Aristocracy, and the staunch Supporters of the late Monarchial Government, tackled to the National Machine, and reduced to the most abject State of Slavery by the Influence of the Military, whose congratulatory Address Bonaparte has received at the Hand of an Officer, and is introducing him into his Secret Chamber to receive Instructions. The Demons hovering over the Imperial Crown denote Five Years of Destruction; during which Period Bonaparte will overrun and ravage the greater Part of the Continent of Europe, be the Means of nearly depopulating Turkey, and finally be slain with the Sword, be cast out as an abominable Branch, and be left as Dung to rot on the Face of the Earth."--British Museum online catalogue

"Folding frontispiece to "A Political Lecture on Heads, alias Blockheads!! A Characteristic Poem: . . .Drawn from Craniological Inspection, after the Manner of Doctors Gall and Spurzheim, of Vienna. By Don Juan Asmodeus. London. Printed for the Author, and Published by John Fairburn, 2, Broadway, Ludgate-Hill (Price One Shilling)." Ten half length caricature portraits arranged in two rows, and, except for the last two, in separate compartments, each illustrating a section of the verse-satire. The date is after Peterloo (16 August 1819), see British Museum Satires No. 13258, and before the King's death (29 Jan. 1820). [1] 'Derry-Down-Triangle', Castlereagh, with ass's ears, his head, adorned by a tiny gibbet, turned in profile to the left, holds up a scourge. On a scroll is the motto 'EIREN·GO·BRAY' (see British Museum Satires No. 13301). [2] 'State Jackal', Canning, directed to the left, holds a pistol in each hand. On his head is a triangle, bells hanging from its apex as from a fool's cap. Behind him is a package inscribed 'Lisbon 20.000 weight'. For his much-attacked mission to Lisbon see British Museum Satires No. 12872, for the duel with Castlereagh, British Museum Satires No. 11370, &c. [3] 'Quack Doctor' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 9849], Sidmouth, in profile to the left, holds a pike on which is speared a ball inscribed 'Circular Pills' [see British Museum Satires No. 13282, &c.]. On his head is a pestle and mortar inscribed 'Drugs for John Bull'. At his back is a large 'Bible' (like Liverpool he was an Evangelical). [4] 'Chancery Jack', the shoulders of Eldon, who scowls to the right, emerge from a 'Coal Tub' (as son of a Newcastle hoastman or coal-broker). He wears wig and gown, across his forehead is a bandage inscribed 'In Chancery'; from his mouth issues the word 'Equity'. [5] Liverpool, in profile to the left, spoons into his mouth liquid from a bowl of 'Water Gruel for the Poor' held in his left hand. On his head is a round tea-tray inscribed '£4.000'; on this are two cups and an urn inscribed 'Cordial Tea'. [6] 'Croaking-Frog--' Croker sits, pen in hand, in profile to the left; on his head is a frog. At his shoulder is a flag inscribed Dry . Rot . In . Navy' above two broken anchors. He says "Fal de Raltit," and before him is a paper: 'Talavira [sic] Algiers 2000'. He has an oddly shaped seat, resting his arm on a 'Quarterly Review', above a longer (curved) block inscribed 'Couriers'. (He was Secretary to the Admiralty, see British Museum Satires No. 12310, author of 'Talavera', a leading contributor to the 'Quarterly', and (with Arbuthnot) manager of the Press for the Ministry.) [7] 'Dunderass--' Lord Melville (First Lord of the Admiralty), in tartan, is in profile to the left, holding a pinch of snuff. "A (tricolour) top with the head of Napoleon spins, above the ground, savagely lashed by representatives of the Allies. His arms and his legs have already been severed from his body, now represented only by the madly spinning top. The most violently active is Blücher (left) stripped to the shirt, his coat and hat thrown on a drum on the extreme left, beside which lie his gloves and baton. Facing them is Wellington (right) equally effective, stern, but less savage. Full-face, and immediately behind the top is the Tsar, left hand on hip; his whip is inscribed 'Knout'. Between him and Wellington is Schwarzenberg (or Francis I). Bernadotte stands rather behind, between Blücher and Alexander, both hands on his hips; he holds a whip but is an amused spectator. Behind (right) the future King of Holland, crowned and wearing a star, but dressed in the breeches and jacket of the Dutchman in English caricature, sits under a tree on a cask of 'Hollands'. He watches delightedly, holding up one of Napoleon's legs inscribed 'United Netherlands'. The other leg, the thigh inscribed 'Swisslad, the boot Italy, lies near Blücher. At Wellington's feet is the right arm inscribed Spain & Portugal'; the left arm, inscribed 'Germany', is near Schwarzenberg. Napoleon's orb and (broken) sceptre lie near him, with some of the feathers from the large hat which is still on his head; his horrified and shrieking profile faces Blücher. In the background (left) is a road along which a carriage drives off, drawn by four galloping horses. It contains tiny figures: Marie Louise, crowned and looking behind her, and the little King of Rome also crowned and waving a sceptre. Two soldiers are on the box, two others sit behind. In the air behind Bernadotte a demon flies off to the left, with Joseph Bonaparte clutching his barbed tail. The latter, his crown flying off, looks back horrified, exclaiming "O!
