Manuscript on parchment of St. Jermone, Epistulae et tractatus. With Ambrosius Mediolanensis (St. Ambrose, 339-397), De excessu fratris.
Description:
Binding: Sixteenth century. Brown leather over cardboard boards, the covers blind-tooled with a triple fillet lozenge inside a floral roll frame, the center and the corners gold-tooled with two different floral tools. Spine with four raised bands and remnants of gold-tooled lilies in the compartments. Edges painted blue. Marks of two pairs of ties., Headings in red. Red heightening (stroking) of the majuscules. 2-3-line flourished initials (with guide letters) in red with penwork varying from pale red to purple. A large (10 lines) decorated flourished initial in red, with developed purple penwork (“R” instead of “D”) in littera duplex style on f. 229v. Two Gothic historiated initials on gold background with floral marginal extensions: f. 1r: St. Jerome with lion and boy holding open a book (damaged); f. 25v: a monk copying., Script: Apparently four scribes: A, Iohannes de Carnago, is the main scribe and copied ff. 1r-260v (with the exception of 8 lines at the bottom) in Gothico-Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria; B copied from the bottom lines of f. 260v to f. 270v, in Humanistica Textualis Libraria; C copied ff. 271r-275v in Gothico-Humanistica Textualis Libraria; and D copied ff. 276r-304v in Gothico-Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria., and The codex belonged to the Diocesan Library of Dunedin, New Zealand. Description:
1-line red versals and 2-line red plain initials. Two large initials: f. 1r, at the beginning of the text of art. 1, historiated 10- line initial in pink on a blue background, containing a half-length profile of a poet or teacher in outline with a yellow dress; f. 10r, at the beginning of art. 2, decorated 9-line initial in pinkon a blue background, filled with red, yellow and green leaves., Binding: Original half brown leather binding over heavy bevelled wooden boards; sewn on two split leather thongs; the spine damaged. Remnants of one strap attached to the front cover, with iron pin on the rear cover., Due to intensive use the pages are badly rubbed and the legibility is impaired; whole passages have been rewritten by a later hand. The corners of the leaves are worn off. Holes and sewings., and Script: Copied by one hand in large Southern Gothica Textualis Formata (Rotunda). The opening majuscule of each verse set off in a separate column.

Alternately red and blue 2- or 3-line (sometimes 4- or 5-line) flourished initials, half inset, with penwork in the opposite colours extending in the left margin or in the intercolumnar space. On f. 1r at the beginning of the text a 9-line littera duplex with penwork, badly rubbed. Guide letters., Binding: Undecorated cardboard cover, sewn on three leather thongs., Collection of Bernard M. Description:
8-line initial (later addition?), f. 1r, red with crude penwork designs in red and black; biting the letter is a grotesque stretched across upper margin, outlined in black with details in red. Small initials in red and/or black: ff. 17v, 31r, 35v, etc. Paragraph marks, initial strokes, and lines drawn through text passages written in Greek, all in red., Binding: Thirteenth century (?), France. Original sewing (except for the first few gatherings) on three tawed skin, slit straps laced through tunnels in the edge to the outside of quarter sawn (?) oak boards, almost flush, and fastened with rectangular, angled wedges. Blue/green and natural color chevron endbands are sewn on tawed skin cores. There is a strip of tawed skin extending a short distance on the outside of the boards and turned in at head and tail. The boards are edged with white, tawed skin and an outer cover is whip stitched to this edging. There is no adhesive on the spine and the cover is held in place by the endbands. The outer cover probably extended and has been cut off flush. Needle holes along the inner edge of the back board fore-edge turn-in. There are traces of two strap-and-pin fastenings, the pins on the lower board. Hole bored on the tail and fore edge of the front board does not seem to serve any purpose., Script: Written by a single scribe in early gothic bookhand, above top line., and Some marginalia lost due to trimming and rubbing.

The letter is addressed to the monks of the Charterhouse of Montdieu in the diocese of Reims. With an index of the chapters of art. 1.

Binding: Twentieth century. Yellow velvet over rounded wooden boards. The former cover consists of a 17th-century document on parchment with text on the inner side, largely illegible due to the remnants of paste on its surface, issued by “Frater Bruno [d'Affringues, 1600-1631], ... totius ordinis Cartusiensis generalis minister”. The former binding contained also three fragments of a 13th-century manuscript on parchment, containing liturgical directions. These are now kept apart with the former cover and a former parchment flyleaf., Red heightening of the majuscules, but layout and decoration lack uniformity. (1) Up to f. 12r inclusively the chapters start in the middle of a line and are preceded by a red paragraph mark; the corresponding chapter number is written by another hand at the same height in one of the side margins, and the chapter heading is added by the same hand in one of the margins and connected to the beginning of the chapter by a reference mark or by a connecting line. (2) From f. 12v up to at least f. 22v the chapters open at the left margin with a 1- or 2-line red plain initial and the corresponding heading and chapter number are copied in red by a contemporary hand in the open space on the preceding line; instructions for these are provided by the scribe (B) in small handwriting alongside the upper or lower edges. (3) Starting f. 23v for the final chapters 40-42 we see the type of layout and decoration as described under (1). On f. 1r a large and narrow “shaped inset” littera duplex in red and green initial F in red and green (8/16 ll.). with extremely developed penwork in the same colours and green extensions in the left margin., Script: Copied by two scribes writing a heavily abbreviated early Gothica Textualis Libraria with simplified letter forms: hand A (ff. 1r-10r, line 5) is rather bold and uses single-compartment a and straight s in all positions; hand B (ff. 10r, line 6-26v) is slightly less careful, there is more variety in the shape of a, and final s is either round or straight., and The lower edges of ff. 2, 7 and 11 are irregular; the lower outer corners of ff. 18, 23 and 24 are defective.
