Binding: Twentieth century. Quarter binding, white parchment and brown paper. Red edges pertaining to a preceding binding., Blank space for a heading above art. 2; red final note on f. 6r. Red stroking of all majuscules. Gothic plain initials in red, 4-line at the head of art. 1, 2-line at the head of art. 2. Large guide letters at the left of the initials., On the originally blank f. 6v a later hand has written notes in a very rapid Gothica Cursiva most difficult to decipher., and Script: Copied by one hand in Humanistica Cursiva under Gothic influence and of low quality.
Annotations: contemporary and later annotations in several hands. Plain edges., Blank binder's leaves not scanned., Large capitals in red at text divisions, sometimes with slight pen ornament, other capitals stroked red throughout, fancy ascenders on top lines transgressing the upper rules and stroked red, similar descenders occasionally below the bottom bordering line, usually not colored., Modern pencil foliation., On paper., Script: Neatly written in a gothic cursive hand., and Watermarks: Two batches of unidentified paper watermarked with a gothic "P," the mark plain and smaller in one batch, larger and surmounted by a trefoil in the other.

2[?] preliminary leaves excised., Binding: 15th-16th centuries, Bohemia. Stays from 15th-century parchment manuscript. Original sewing on three double supports attached to flush, sharply bevelled wooden boards. Spine leather originally sewn around endbands. Covered in cream colored suede-like skin with very faint traces of a blind-tooled X in an outer frame. Spine: double fillets at head and tail; a neat, sewn mend near the head. Pink paper place marks on the fore edge. Two strap-and-pin fastenings, the pins on the upper board and stubs of kermes pink straps attached to lower one with flower-shaped plates. Trace of a chain attachment near head of lower board; title (mostly effaced) in gothic bookhand near head of upper board., MS waste used in binding., Purchased from H. Rosenthal in 1946 by H. P. Kraus, who sold it in 1957 to Thomas E. Marston., Script: Written by a single scribe in running hybrida script., Unattractive initials in red (or red and black divided) with penwork designs, dots, knobs and/or heart-shaped appendages, all in red and black. Mottled beige paper over pasteboard., Script: Artt. 1-3 are copied by one hand writing Humanistica Cursiva Libraria with relatively many abbreviations. The numerous marginal lemmata, headings or Nota-marks are, apart from a few later additions, by the same hand. Artt. 4-5 are by two different 16th century Italian hands., and Watermark: a horn (var. Briquet 7686). An unknown number of bifolios is missing between ff. 28 and 29.

Description:
Binding: Sixteenth century. Brown leather over cardboard boards, the covers blind-tooled with a triple fillet lozenge inside a floral roll frame, the center and the corners gold-tooled with two different floral tools. Spine with four raised bands and remnants of gold-tooled lilies in the compartments. Edges painted blue. Marks of two pairs of ties., Headings in red. Red heightening (stroking) of the majuscules. 2-3-line flourished initials (with guide letters) in red with penwork varying from pale red to purple. A large (10 lines) decorated flourished initial in red, with developed purple penwork (“R” instead of “D”) in littera duplex style on f. 229v. Two large initials: f. 1r, at the beginning of the text of art. 1, historiated 10- line initial in pink on a blue background, containing a half-length profile of a poet or teacher in outline with a yellow dress; f. 10r, at the beginning of art. 2, decorated 9-line initial in pinkon a blue background, filled with red, yellow and green leaves., Binding: Original half brown leather binding over heavy bevelled wooden boards; sewn on two split leather thongs; the spine damaged. Remnants of one strap attached to the front cover, with iron pin on the rear cover., Due to intensive use the pages are badly rubbed and the legibility is impaired; whole passages have been rewritten by a later hand. The corners of the leaves are worn off. Holes and sewings., and Script: Copied by one hand in large Southern Gothica Textualis Formata (Rotunda). The opening majuscule of each verse set off in a separate column.

Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Quarter bound in tan paper with semi-limp paper sides. Written, in ink, on spine: "De Scientia/ Loquendi/ Tacendi/ Manos" and "Albertani/ Pergomena". On parchment leaves at front and rear: rust stains from five bosses and 2 fore-edge fastenings of an earlier binding., Initials for major text divisions in red with designs on parchment ground, 18- to 4-line, and some (e.g., f. 28r) with modest penwork designs in red and/or black. Small plain initials, 3- to 1-line, rubrics, and paragraph marks, in red., Purchased in 1954 from B. Rosenthal by Thomas E. Martson., and Script: Written by a single scribe in an informal gothic bookhand, below top line.
Binding: Nineteenth century, English. Marbled paper boards, green calf back with six heavy (false?) bands, the compartments with patterns of small tools impressed in gold and with gold-stamped titles, a small rectangular label with the printed number 1037 and a small round label with the inked number 894 glued to the bottommost compartment. All edges gilt. Preserved in a modern green cloth folding box, probably French, with leather label., Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps. Mellon MS 155, acquired from C. A. Stonehill, Inc. (bookseller), New Haven. Gift of Paul and Mary Mellon, 1965., Rubrics, and occasional headlines in red, diagrams in the text in brown and red inks. Full illuminated border, outlined in red, on f. 1r of leafy sprays in colors and gold, the white spaces filled up with black dots and small burnished gold circles each with three or four small tendrils; a large initial in burnished gold and colors at the beginning of the text in the first column, with gold band extending downward and then around three sides of the page forming an inner border, completed by a red line at top; a lozenge at the center of the lower band of the border containing a pattern of platelike discs, quatrefoils, and a leafy spray on a dull gold ground, this segment almost certainly a later replacement of an original coat of arms which has been erased. Elsewhere in the manuscript smaller illuminated initials in the style of the first frequently occur, and larger ones with descenders to partial borders at the foot of the page occur. Each of the ninety-six pages from f. 191r through 238v has four drawings in colors (six on those pages which open each of the signs of the Zodiac), placed within diagrams accompanied by slight text., and Script: Written by a single scribe in a large and clear hand in Gothica textualis formata and Bastarda.
