"A stout stage-coachman, perhaps an amateur, holding a bowl, stands by the door of an inn, taking the chin of the very buxom landlady. He has a team-whip and wears a round hat and many-caped overcoat reaching to the feet. Above their heads swings the (pictorial) signboard: 'Widow Casey at the Sign of the Cock and Bottle' [in reversed characters]. Just within the door stands a young maidservant, smiling at the encounter. Above the door: 'Genteel Accomodations'. On the wall is a bill headed 'York Races'. "An elderly judge holding a large open book, 'Law . . . Statutes', addresses a juryman, who stands facing him in the jury-box, where the rest of the jury are registering disgust. He says: "Mr Juryman-- you have requested permission to retire for a few moments--I have been looking some time for a precedent, and have at last found by the 25th of William Rufus, Chap 531, that a Juryman on any urgent occasion may retire backwards for the space of ten minutes only--therefore you may withdraw." A pretty and buxom girl carrying milk-pails suspended from a yoke is embraced by a young man in cap, gown, and bands who leans towards her through a casement window. She disregards her milk-pails; one, containing two infants, tilts upwards, the other, full of milk, correspondingly descends and a spaniel greedily laps the milk. He carries her umbrella, cloak, pattens, and a bundle in a check handkerchief. She holds a fan. An elderly man (right) walking in the opposite direction looks angrily at the couple; he swaggers in front of his pretty young wife, who appears pregnant and walks carrying a little girl and an umbrella. "An ugly decrepit old doctor, in old-fashioned dress and wig, stands with his back to the fire (right) receiving a pair of country-bumpkins, shown in by a servant out of livery, who stands at the door (left), grinning delightedly. The man, a burly fellow, is followed by his plainly-dressed and anxious wife. He says: "Do you see Doctor my Dame and I become [sic] to ax your advice--we both of us eat well, and drink well, and sleep well--yet still we be somehow queerish". The doctor, holding his cane to his nose, answers: "You eat well--you drink well and you sleep well--very good-- You was perfectly right in coming to me, for depend upon it I will give you something that shall do away all these things". On the chimney-piece are jars and bottles with a bust of 'Galen', Against the wall is a heavy book-case with glass doors containing large volumes."--British Museum online catalogue

"A ... sailor, arm-in-arm with a woman, stands in front of the door of a corner-house abutting on a quay. She is gaily dressed, holding a parasol, and slung with gold chains, a miniature (cf. British Museum Satires No. 10894) hangs from one, a watch and seals from the other. Above the door is a board: 'Lodgings for Single Men and Their Wives'. On the door is an inscription with a pointing hand: 'Please to ring the Bell'. The sailor says: "Why Nan-this is the very birth, we have been so long looking for".
