Abstract:
"Design in an oval. Two men playing cards at a small round table. The man on the right pulls out an ace of spades from the five cards in his hand and shows it with a grimace of satisfaction. His opponent (left), in profile to the right, looks at it with an expression of consternation, frowning and opening his mouth wide. The pack and other cards lie on the table. The men are probably portraits. The successful player is middle-aged, plainly dressed, with a bob-wig; the other is younger, very thin, and more fashionably dressed, with a long pigtail queue."--British Museum online catalogue.

A coat of arms with three dark bird-like objects within. An armor-clad arm grasping a sword is above, and mantling, flowers, and leaves surrounds the crest. A nude cherub wearing a winged helmet and holding aloft a caduceus in his right hand stands among some books, scrolls, and a quill pen with inkwell.
John T. Mason emigrated to California in 1854. He worked on river steamers in the area of Sacramento, and in 1861 he began ranching in Colusa County. and Purchased from William P. Wreden on the William Robertson Coe Fund, 1964.
A coat of arms divided in half by an indent featuring three flowers. Above are the heads and torsos of two dragon-like creatures; below is one of the same. Mantling surrounds the crest, and a right-sided arm clad in armor brandishing a sword is at the helm. Below, flanking three military-esque medals, is the motto Through Difficulties.
