Diary completely digitized. and William E. Prince, born in and appointed from Massachusetts to the United States Army, describes the military posts in which he served, namely: Ringgold Barracks, Forts Clark, Terrett, Duncan, McKavett, Texas, and Fort Arbuckle, Indian Territory. He describes the wagon trains, the difficulties with the Mexicans crossing the border, the Carbajal revolt in Mexico, 1850-1853, known as the Merchants War, and his command along the Rio Grande where the army was preserving civil authority.

Holograph diary, dating from October 16, 1842 to December 3, 1843, in which Trueheart describes his experiences as a prisoner of Mexico after his capture in San Antonio by General Woll. The diary documents his march with other prisoners from Monclova to Perote, Mexico, and his imprisonment at the "Perote Castle." Trueheart describes his daily activities during the march and in prison, lists names of other prisoners held at the castle, and comments on news received regarding the continuing conflict between Texas and Mexico. Laid in is a sheet containing a list of one day's rations for fifty-nine men, signed James L. Trueheart and dated August 17, 1843; a photocopy of James L. Trueheart's one-page oath of identity dated May 28, 1874; and a one-page photocopy of part of a legal document regarding a claim against the Republic of Texas dated July 21, 1851.
Description:
James L. Trueheart came to Texas from Virginia in 1838, settled in San Antonio in 1841, and became Clerk of the District Court. In September 1842, Trueheart was among the Texans captured by General Adrian Woll at San Antonio. He was imprisoned in "Perote Castle" (Castillo de San Carlos, Perote, Mexico), and released on March 22, 1844. Trueheart returned to San Antonio, and later was elected to County and State offices. He died on November 30, 1882. and Purchased from Western Hemisphere, Inc. on the Thomas W. Streeter Fund, 1971.

Copy of a letter by Juan José Hernández concerning his participation in a special session of the Ayuntamiento regarding the impending proclamation of secession by Texas. Hernández mentions President Santa Anna's appeal for acceptance of the proclamation and for a united effort to popularize this development. He also records the Ayuntamiento's agreement with the proposal and the names of the officials present.
