"The scene is the throne-room in the Tuileries, indicated by a part of the throne on its dais on the extreme right, on which are the (discarded) throne and sceptre, and by a large whole length portrait of Louis XVIII, scowling and caricatured, inscribed 'Louis le Bien Aimé'. Napoleon as Harlequin (as in British Museum Satires Nos. 10060, 12515), in parti-coloured tights, a dagger in each hand, leaps through an opening cut in the canvas, hounded by the monarchs of Europe. The portrait (right) shows the fat king holding orb and sceptre, with eyes closed or downcast. The canvas from waist to knees of the portrait is cut neatly away, leaving the King's gouty feet resting squarely on a footstool. Just behind Harlequin is the fat King of Würtemberg on his knees (and paunch) firing a pair of pistols at the fugitive. Across his posterior is the word 'Clown'. Beside him Ferdinand of Spain falls backwards, overbalanced by an attempt to kick ; his crown falls off and he flourishes a sword. He is identified by his slashed doublet, cloak, and flapped boots. Behind (left) a fat powerful Cossack, representing Russia, prods Napoleon with his long spear. He wears a fur cap, trousers tucked into his boots, and has a pair of pistols in his belt. Farther back is the Emperor of Austria wearing a wallet inscribed 'Pantaloon'. He is bearded, slippered, spectacled, and lean, wearing a crown and a dressing-gown. He shuffles forward with clenched fists, holding a dagger. On the extreme left is the Pope, wearing a mitre and holding a headsman's axe against his shoulder. Other figures are nearer the wall which forms a background. Foremost of these is the King of Prussia, close behind Napoleon and firing a blunderbuss. Next is the grotesque Dutchman who stands for the new King of Holland, smoking a pipe, and firing a musket with a fiercely intent expression. Three unidentified crowned heads, and a sharp profile ( ? Bernadotte) with bayonets and spear, and an arm holding up a spiked club make up the crowd of attackers. One of the monarchs takes down from the wall (or hangs up) a three-quarter length portrait of 'Columbine', a young woman with a feathered hat and plump arms held akimbo. She is either Marie Louise (as in British Museum Satires No. 12515), or, according to Broadley, the Duchesse d'Angoulême, an identification supported by the position of her portrait in the same room as that of Louis XVIII."--British Museum online catalogue

Vansittart and Castlereagh, as surgeons, bleeding coins from the arms of John Bull. The coins are collected by Prince Leopold, Princess Charlotte, a tiny McMahon, a Chinese mandarin, and the gouty Regent. Brougham, stands on the left, pointing finger at John Bull, saying, "Retrench! Johnny, Retrench! practise [sic] a little more Economy." and "John Bull sits foursquare in an arm-chair, between two surgeons, his arms extended horizontally and supported by the vertical poles which he clutches; these are spirally striped, like the barber's pole, and are such as were used by practisers of phlebotomy. The one in his right hand is inscribed 'Additional Military Staff to support the Peace'; the other: 'Wellington's Staff'. The surgeon on the left is Vansittart, in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, triumphantly holding up his lancet as guineas spout from the incision in John's right arm. The coin is collected by Prince Leopold in a warming-pan inscribed '60,000 per Ann'. [see British Museum Satires No. 12754] and by Princess Charlotte, who holds out a large receptacle inscribed 'For Wedding Garm[ents] Diamond Trinkets & Baubles'. She looks sideways at the warming-pan; her very décolletée dress has a train, and she wears a small crown or coronet. His military tunic is covered with stars, and he stares intently at the golden shower. Castlereagh, with a cynical smile, operates on the left arm. A tiny McMahon swarms up the pole and holds out his 'Privy Purse', see British Museum Satires No. 11874, to catch a trickle from the wound. The main shower of guineas falls into the enormous jaws of a squatting and grotesque Chinese mandarin (see British Museum Satires No. 12749) whose obese body, in the form of a large bag, is inscribed 'To pay off Arrears of the Civil List'. Over this bag, the biggest of the receptacles depicted, the gouty Regent stoops forward, supported on crutches, his head turned to the left, staring with apprehensive malevolence at Brougham who stands on the extreme left, not caricatured. John Bull, a stout 'cit', wears patched and ragged waistcoat and breeches. His empty pockets are inside out. He registers alarm, and exclaims: "Pray good folks have a little mercy & spare the Vital stream which sustains me!-- Consider what Oceans I have spilt in the late Wars!--I am too much exhausted to Bleed as freely as formerly--You have Open'd so many veins & drain'd me so incessantly that I fear my Constitution is impair'd for ever! My Friends, say that I am Declining fast & will certainly Die of a Galloping Consumption!!!" Two hussars with drawn sabres stand on guard behind his chair, watching the operation with pleased surprise. Behind them, the middle distance and background are filled with soldiers standing at attention with drawn sabres or fixed bayonets, wearing braided tunics and high hussar caps. They have British flags, faintly indicated, one being a Union flag, another the Royal Standard, and a fringed banner inscribed 'Standing Army For the Peace Establishment'. On the right, behind the Regent, the Tsar walks off to the right, looking over his shoulder with a pleased smile; he carries a sack across his shoulder inscribed 'Subsidies Russia'. With him, but less conspicuous, are Francis I and Frederick William; each carries a basket on his head heaped with coins, one 'Subsidies For Austria', the other 'Subsidies for Prussia'. All three wear uniform. Brougham, who wears a long loose coat, with trousers, and holds a top-hat, stands in profile to the right, his right arm extended with admonitory finger pointing at John Bull. He says: "Retrench! Johnny, Retrench!--practise a little more Economy in your present Wretched State, or you'll never Recover!--you have too many Physicians & their constant Employment is very Expensive they will not leave you till they have the last Shilling!--Kick out the Doctors & a fig for the Disease!!" At his feet and in the foreground is a neat box inscribed '37 Styptics [see British Museum Satires No. 12750, &c.] for Curing John Bull's Dreadful Disorder by Brougham & C°.' Near it are the fragments of a broken tub inscribed: 'Property Tax receiver rendered useless by the "ignorant impatience" of John Bull.' In front of John are a jar of 'Leeches' and a book: 'The Red Book or or [sic] a list of Persons Holding Sinecures'. "A (tricolour) top with the head of Napoleon spins, above the ground, savagely lashed by representatives of the Allies. His arms and his legs have already been severed from his body, now represented only by the madly spinning top. The most violently active is Blücher (left) stripped to the shirt, his coat and hat thrown on a drum on the extreme left, beside which lie his gloves and baton. Facing them is Wellington (right) equally effective, stern, but less savage. Full-face, and immediately behind the top is the Tsar, left hand on hip; his whip is inscribed 'Knout'. Between him and Wellington is Schwarzenberg (or Francis I). Bernadotte stands rather behind, between Blücher and Alexander, both hands on his hips; he holds a whip but is an amused spectator. Behind (right) the future King of Holland, crowned and wearing a star, but dressed in the breeches and jacket of the Dutchman in English caricature, sits under a tree on a cask of 'Hollands'. He watches delightedly, holding up one of Napoleon's legs inscribed 'United Netherlands'. The other leg, the thigh inscribed 'Swisslad, the boot Italy, lies near Blücher. At Wellington's feet is the right arm inscribed Spain & Portugal'; the left arm, inscribed 'Germany', is near Schwarzenberg. Napoleon's orb and (broken) sceptre lie near him, with some of the feathers from the large hat which is still on his head; his horrified and shrieking profile faces Blücher. In the background (left) is a road along which a carriage drives off, drawn by four galloping horses. It contains tiny figures: Marie Louise, crowned and looking behind her, and the little King of Rome also crowned and waving a sceptre. Two soldiers are on the box, two others sit behind. In the air behind Bernadotte a demon flies off to the left, with Joseph Bonaparte clutching his barbed tail. The latter, his crown flying off, looks back horrified, exclaiming "O! "The sovereigns of Europe, &c, watch from their seats in a bull-ring the Spanish bull tossing Napoleon above its head. The point of his sword projects from the ferocious animal's shoulder; he holds his broken sword, dripping blood, and has a badly gashed thigh. His cocked hat and a paper, 'Plan pour Assujettir le Monde' [cf. BMSat 10599, &c.], fall to the ground. A broken collar inscribed 'Corsican Chain' is round the bull's neck, a few links of a heavy chain still attached to it. The bull tramples on and befouls Joseph Bonaparte, who lies on his back, moribund or dead, in his rightoyal robes, the crown falling from his head; under his hand is a torn paper: 'Coronation de Joseph Boanaparte Rex Espagnol-Gibraltar-&c. Nap'. Three bulls, previously disposed of by the Corsican Matador, and horribly gashed, lie on the ground (r.), bellowing. A butcher's ticket is affixed to each: 'Prussian Bull Beef', 'Dutch Bull Beef', 'Danish Bull Beef'. They are [marginal note] "Wounded Bulls bellowing for help-." The barrier, an arc of which frames the arena, is inscribed 'Theatre Royale de I'Europe'. Behind it, and along the upper margin of the design, sit the sovereigns. On the extreme left. is George III, in military uniform, holding a trident (emblem of sea-power), and peering down impassively through his glass; the back of his (coronation) chair is partly visible. Next him is (?) the Emperor of Austria, gripping the edge of the barrier with a gauntleted hand and with the hilt of his sword projecting from his right. hand. Next John, the Regent of Portugal holds up his hat in exultation; he clutches a bottle of 'Vin de Brazil' [see BMSat 10960, &c.]. Next him, the Tsar, his head encircled by the words 'Alexr the Great', bites the corner of a feathered tricorne in his agitation. The King of Prussia grasps a feathered cocked hat, and puts his hand to his mouth. The bellicose King of Sweden wears a fur-trimmed tunic and a fur cap, with a star, inscribed 'Polar Star' [the Swedish order]. Two pistols are thrust through his belt. Next is the Pope, wearing his tiara, and holding up his cross; before him is a paper: 'The Bull for Excommunicating the Corsican Usurper'. "Three allied generals (left) hold the long handle of a shovel (peel) on which is a dish containing a tiny Napoleon. This they try to push into a baker's oven, but are hindered by the Austrian emperor, who holds the door of the oven, feigning to be trying to open it, but actually holding it at an angle which prevents the entry of the dish. The leading baker is Blücher, wearing an apron over his uniform, and without a hat; he looks sternly at Francis, saying, "Pull away Frank! you Keep us waiting!" General Mikhail Woronzoff, young and handsome, immediately behind Blücher, pushes hard, saying, "In with it Blücher." On the extreme left is Bernadotte, one hand on Woronzoff's shoulder, saying, "I tell you what, Woronzow, the Hinges want a little Russia Oil." Francis I, who like the others wears uniform with jack-boots, but has (baker's) over-sleeves to the elbow, says with an expression of startled alarm: "This door Sticks! I dont think I shall get it open?!" A weathercock surmounts his cocked hat. Wellington comes up (right), poking him in the back with his baker's tray on which are two pies. He says: "Shove alltogather [sic] Gentlemen! D-me shove door & all in!" His two pies are 'Soult Pie', with two spurred jack-booted legs projecting through the crust, and a pie with spires and other buildings, with a flag inscribed 'Bourdeaux'. He wears an apron and the order of the Golden Fleece as well as the star of the Garter. A fat, grotesque Dutchman sits on a flat cushion gazing up at the oven; he holds, but does not use, a pair of bellows. In his conical hat is a tobacco-pipe. The fire under the oven is filled with broken eagles and fragments of weapons. Among the debris in the recess for ashes is a crown. Above the oven is the inscription 'Allied Oven' surmounted by a crown and cross-bones. In the shadow formed by the half-open door, a skull (Death) waits to receive Napoleon, who lies on his back, kicking violently, and shouting "Murder! Murder!!"; he wears a large plumed bicorne. "An intricate design with small inset scenes, the background being walls of a room covered with free copies of caricatures against George IV, chiefly relating to the Queen. On the extreme left is an open door, showing Napoleon as a tiny colossus on the summit of St. Helena (see British Museum Satires No. 12611, &c.), a steep rock. In the centre George IV, his forehead inscribed '0', stands in deep dejection, looking down; he has ass's ears, and from his fob, in place of seals, hang bottle, corkscrew (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13299), pie, &c. Loops of rope hang from his pockets. He stands on thorn-branches, as do his Ministers and brother-sovereigns, orientals excepted. No. '1' (a small scene in the background). Six Ministers dance round Britannia who is chained to the ground: Castlereagh, Sidmouth, Liverpool, Bathurst, Melville, and Wellington (names from initials); they say: "We have put him in a pretty Situation." Answer: "Laugh & Rejoice I have New Years Gifts for you in my Pockets." (He threatens them with dismissal for their failure to obtain his divorce.)The next are '2, K--g of Pru--a', a very tall officer wearing a mortar-board cap (see British Museum Satires No. 12283) who points derisively at George IV, saying: "Stupid Ass he is right enough to be ashamed of himself"; '3. Em--r of R--a', adapted from British Museum Satires No. 13010, and laughing as in that plate, but wearing a barber's bowl (Mambrino's helmet) inscribed 'New Don' [Quixote]; he says: "It is enough to set one mad"; '4. Em--r of A--a', thin and shrivelled, with his grandson, '18, Napoleon 2', a tiny figure in his pocket who says: "I wish I could move this bowl"; Francis says: "What a face." George IV's answer to the three sovereigns is "Go to School before you laugh at me Small Heads upon Tall Bodies had it not been for me you would have been on the Parish, a long time ago [an allusion to British subsidies, cf. British Museum Satires No. 12875]. Come Come you are as black as myself or our Infernal Brother." He answers 'Napoleon 2': "Be comforted, in a little time you will roll it." '5' and '6', seated together cross-legged in the foreground, are 'Great T--k' and 'Em--r of P--a', who say "Turn Turk then since thy wife no longer pleases thee" and "Prends garde qu'on ne te mette en perce." The King answers them: "For a long time I have had a great mind to do it" and "That is what I Dread." Nos. '7' to '12' are sovereigns standing in a row behind '2' and' 3'. '7 The K--g of S--n' says: "For this long year I pity but cannot help laughing in seeing you"; answer: "We shall see who will laugh the last" (Ferdinand VII since early in 1820 was in the power of revolutionaries); '6. K--g of Na--s', his head a block of 'Naples Soap', says: "My brother in misfortune speeks [sic] the truth." (There was revolution in the Two Sicilies, cf. British Museum Satires No. 14132.) Answer: "Nay all the little Dogs will Bark look at this Cake ['cake' (slang) = fool, gull, or blockhead, cf. British Museum Satires No. 10750] of Naples soap you would do better to eat your Macaroni and come and Drink with me to comfort us." '9. K--g of B--a', "It would have been better to have said nothing"; answer: "I confess it would have been better." '10. K--g of W--g'. "Clamour in such cases is wore [sic] than silence"; answer: "Experience has taught it me." '11. K--g of S--x--y.' "I in your case would have taken my wife and lived politically with her"; answer: "It would have been the most advisable Plan." '12. K--g of N--ds.' "Gratitude compels me to pity you" [see British Museum Satires No. 12102, &c.]; answer: "Think rather to preserve the Administration of thy Cheeses" [a remark borne out by the Belgian revolution of 1830]. Even bulkier than George IV is '14. L--s. tout de Suite [XVIII]', who sits on thorns, and has cloven hooves for feet and hands, animal's ears, and a small black cap or tonsure; from his shoulders hangs a long rosary with a dangling cross. Looking up at George IV with a cynical smile he says: "Poor fool"; answer: "At last comes the Kick of the Ass, But I have a Dish ready forhim." Behind Louis is '13. Em--r of Ch--na', saying: "You look a thousand times more like a Chinese than myself in your B--s pavillion"; answer: "Thou art the only one I could not deceive." Standing in the doorway are three well-dressed young men who are 'People', they are 15-17, and look at the King with smiling contempt; the third points to Napoleon. '15.' "You are the laughing stock of your faithful brothers who are no better than yourself"; answer: "It is true when too late I have open'd my eyes, but look at my pockets and you will find Ropes for my M--n--st--rs and my Brothers." '16' "We have found you out at length in spite of your mask do us justice or we shall give you your deserts Whitehall is not gone and there is room for you all" [an allusion to Charles I's fate, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13269]; answer: "Do it yourselves, it will be the shortest way." '17.' "Boney Boney you alone deserve our tears your fall has been as fatal to them as to ourselves your return would save us all." Answer: "He is a Man I must allow it." (For 18 see under 4.) '19' is "Green Bag [see British Museum Satires No. 13735], inscribed Milan Commission [see British Museum Satires No. 13755]; it says: / am cruelly thrown aside and fallen into very bad hands" [see British Museum Satires No. 13986]; answer: "However all my hopes are in the [sic]." Prints (uncoloured), or ad hoc designs, completely cover the walls; only a few can be identified. The lunette under the domed ceiling contains apotheoses of Queen Caroline; these are flanked by designs, both on the vaulted ceiling, depicting the joy of John Bull (left) and Britannia (right) on her return to England, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13743. Below, on the three walls, are thirty-one prints copied or adapted regardless of the size of the originals. The two largest, in the upper left corner, are from British Museum Satires No. 13843 (simplified and perhaps combined with British Museum Satires No. 13764) and British Museum Satires No. 13786. Others are British Museum Satires No. 13210, reversed and simplified; British Museum Satires No. 13998, reversed and altered, or a similar plate; British Museum Satires No. 13830, simplified, or a similar plate; British Museum Satires Nos. 13851, 13901, 14012; the King from British Museum Satires No. 13848 (throwing mud, the Queen not depicted, the right of the plate hidden by George IV). British Museum Satires No. 13508, a small woodcut, appears as a full-sized print; British Museum Satires No. 14029 is simplified and the domes of the Pavilion are introduced. The origins of twenty others have not been traced. On the floor behind Louis XVIII (left) are partly rolled caricatures, and on the right is a print (coloured) of Castlereagh standing behind a huge pie from which he carves portions for four supplicants, evidently the King of Prussia, the Tsar, the Emperor of Austria, and (?) Bernadotte (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13619). As a pendant to this is a battle scene: the statue of Napoleon presides over an empty throne; beside it stands a woman who offers crown and sceptre to a little boy (his son) who runs to take it, holding the hand of a Grenadier, beside whom is another soldier (cf. "A huge bull, snorting fire, rushes with lowered head towards a French fort (left) from which cannon-balls descend upon him. Beneath the fort sansculottes on one knee fire at the bull while standing French soldiers, correctly dressed, also fire. On the fortress stand Frenchmen, firing and waving their hats; they shout: "Vive la republic, Blood & plunder, no Quarter to John Bull!" A huge tricolour flag has a staff surmounted by a skull. To the bull's back is strapped a bundle inscribed 'Debt Debt'. One horn has been shot off and lies on the ground. To his left hind leg is chained a heavy weight inscribed 'Subsidies'. Nevertheless, he cries: "Now my brave Allies let us all stand firm together & make a bold push, & I'll be Answerable for the Event." But behind him (right) his allies have all turned their backs and are departing in directions indicated by signposts. A fat Dutchman smoking a pipe goes 'To Amsterdam', saying, "I care not who beats, I'll join the Strongest Party". Frederick William II (father-in-law of the Duke of York) walks off 'To Berlin', saying, "I've fingerd the Cash from both Sides, & will now employ it to Secure the Partition of Poland"; "Negociate with Robertspierre privately & then - Damn Relationship!!!" Next, a Spanish don, Charles IV, goes 'To Madrid', saying, "Whats the Bourbon Family to me when they Impede my Interest. Hush!! I am now treating for a Separate peace with that Blackguard Roberspere to Secure my own Crown - I must enlarge the Powers of the Inquisition". On the extreme right Francis II and Mack in a two-wheeled gig, on which is the Habsburg eagle, are driving off 'To Vienna'. The Emperor says: "Well Mack we have made a Glorious Campaign of it; of what use are the Low Countries without they continue to fill my Coffers? "Napoleon, a little figure with a big head, stands with legs astride, head turned to the left, hair on end; his arms are extended, fingers spread, mouth open as if shrieking. He has a grotesque profile with corvine nose and wears high jack-boots with large spurs. At his feet lies a broken baton inscribed 'Magic Wand'. Five allies threaten him at point-blank range, and from a circle of cloud an arm emerges holding a conical 'Allied Extinguisher' above his head. On the extreme left Wellington aims a blunderbuss, saying, "Take a good aim at the Head Gentlemen, & we shall soon settle the Business." On Wellington's left stands Francis I, aiming a small pistol; by his head are the words: 'A way Mr Boney the Hand of Justice [see No. 12247] will put your Night Cap on at last.' On the extreme right a fat Dutchman, wearing a conical cap as in No. 12105, stands behind a small cannon holding a lighted match and a cannon-ball inscribed 'Orange Boven'; he says: "I'll deal out my Oranges to him Wholesale." Beside him are piled cannon-balls inscribed 'Orange'. In his hat are orange ribbons inscribed 'Orange Boven' and a tobacco-pipe. Next him the Tsar leans forward, aiming a large pistol; he says: "I'll rattle a few Snow Balls at his Cranium." On Alexander's right stands Bernadotte, aiming a small pistol; he says: "By gar we shall mak de head look like de plomb Pudding." All but the Dutchman wear uniform with cocked hats.
