Above the fireplace is a broadside entitled: The storm by Mr. Dodd, cease rude boreas balstering railes ... On the table below the window (left) is a bowl labeled "Pease porridge" and a wig on a stand. On the ground at her feet lies a corset, shoes and other garments. "Scene in a neat parlour or music room, with open square piano and lyre-back chairs. A middle-aged termagant, coquettishly dressed, has overturned her chair and stands with raised fist, shrieking at a very young man in riding-dress. He sits (left) with hat and riding-switch beside him, bewildered and passive; his dog takes cover under his chair, looking sideways at an aggressive cat which arches its back against its mistress. A cockatoo screams from its perch. On the piano, which is inscribed Row Maker, is an open music-book: Blow High. Blow Low; on the floor is a book open at Wake to Ecstacy the living Lyre. Behind the woman's head is a convex wall-mirror, topped by a carved eagle which looks fiercely down. An angry, bare-breasted young woman in a night dress and cap enters the door of a sitting room from a bedroom (seen through the open door on the right). She scowls at the white-haired man relaxed in an armchair in front of a fire; he smokes a pipe and holds a goblet of wine in his left hand as he leans back in the chair, his feet resting on the grate of the roaring fire; at his elbow a table with a lit candle, carafe, jug, spoon, and book "Miseries of Human Life". One dog sleeps near a gun propped up against the mantel piece; a hunting cap hangs on back wall. Another dog looks at the woman from under the table at the man's side and barks. A large cat that has come in with the woman hisses back at him. A book on the mantel is titled "Rule a wife and have a wife"; the painting above the mantel "Mr. Pantons grey mare ranter out of doll tearsheet." "An enormously fat lady flings up arms, legs, and tea-cup in terror, as her flimsy gown catches fire from a red-hot poker falling from the grate (left). She, a stiff military officer, and a young woman sit at a round tea-table. The man sits paralysed, alarmed and helpless, spilling his tea; the girl has added to the calamity by knocking over the tea-table so that urn and tea-pot spill their scalding contents, and crockery slides towards the floor. A loutish footman enters (right) but has stopped dead, dropping a dish of muffins. A frightened cat scampers from the hearth-rug. Over the chimney-piece is a picture of Vesuvius in eruption.
