Manuscript on parchment of Aulus Gellius, Noctes Atticae (abridged).
Description:
Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Sewn on three tawed skin, kermes pink slit straps nailed in channels on the outside of the wooden boards. Yellow edges. The plain wound endbands may have been resewn. The spine is lined with cloth. Covered in brown, originally tan, sheepskin with corner tongues. Blind-tooled with two rope interlace stars in a central panel bordered with concentric frames. Spine: bands outlined with double fillets; panels diapered with triple fillets. Two truncated diamond fastenings, the catches on the lower board (one wanting), the upper board cut in for straps attached with star-headed nails., Folio 1r with partial border in inner and lower margin (rubbed). Inner margin has scrolling vine, yellow, on parchment ground with red dots, with stylized foliage, flowers and fruit in green, red, purple and dove grey. Illuminated initial, 3-line, purple on dark green ground, is incorporated into border. In lower margin, wreathed medallion (unidentified mutilated arms: per pale, or and sable?) on pink ground, supported by two heraldic dragons, parchment colored (unfinished) against red ground. All of this decoration appears to be a later addition. Plain initials and headings in red., and Script: Written in fere-humanistic script by a single scribe, below top line.
Manuscript on parchment, composed of 2 parts, both of uneven quality. Part I of the codex written in the 15th century. The final quire, written probably in the 14th century, was bound in with the first 186 ff. in the 16th or 17th century. Contains excerpts of historical tracts, medical recipes, charms, prayers, notes on parliament, philosophy, and dream interpretation, proverbs, poems, notes on horses and hunting, and excerpts from astronomical and religious tracts

In English and Latin., Script: Part I (ff. 1-186): Written in Anglicana, by 2 main scribes, with abundant notes and texts added in margins and blank spaces by other hands. On ff. 179r-181r the scribe begins in Anglicana formata but lapses into a more cursive grade. Initials (3- and 2-line), underlining, rubrics and slashes at ends of sentences in red. From ff. 103r-140v, 3- and 2-line initials in blue with red penwork and long flourishes; on ff. 30r-31v (on the exchequer), checkerboards in blue, red and black in upper and lower margins. Water stains on ff. 1-2, only affecting a few words of the text. Part II (ff. 187-193): Written by one scribe in an uneven 14th-century Anglicana. Three-line initial on f. 187r not filled in. Outer column of f. 187 cut off., and Binding: 16th-17th centuries. Limp, flush boards are made up of fibrous, felted material (paper?) sandwiched between two layers of vellum, which extend across the spine. This case is glued and tacketed to the bookblock with three tackets consisting of at least six threads each. Stitches go through the spine linings around three threads at head and tail. Covered with tawed skin, originally pink, the turn-ins glued over the pastedowns. The cover extends in fore-edge and envelope flaps. Some rodent damage on the upper board and part of the envelope cut away. Discoloration and traces of adhesive on three outer edges of envelope flap.

In Latin., Watermarks: similar to Briquet Huchet 7693., Script: Written by a single scribe in various styles of italic script; heavy annotations by the scribe and later hands., Several crude initials: f. 1r, 4-line gold initial on blue ground, infilled red, and 3-line red initial on gold ground; on f. 2r, 5-line red initial on blue ground; f. 72v, 4-line red initial on green ground with some flourishes and gold dots, infilled blue. Initials (2- and 1-line), names of authors (added in margins), paragraph marks and headings in pale red., and Binding: Nineteenth century. Quarter bound in brown, diced calf with a gold-tooled title on spine: "Miscellanea di Seneca, Petrarcha e d'altri". Orange, leather-grained paper sides. Rebacked.
