Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Vellum stays adhered inside and outside of quires. Backs of quires cut in for original sewing. Bookblock tacketed to a semi-limp paper case, reinforced at the spine. Handwritten paper label with title and a printed medallion with Flora (?) standing on an anchor and globe (?), both on spine., Blue initial, 6-line, with nice penwork designs, f. 1r. Smaller initials, 2-line, red with purple designs or blue with red designs, alternate throughout. Headings in pale red. Paragraph marks alternate red and blue. Later addition of arms in lower margin, f. 1r, effaced and covered with mending strips., Purchased from B. M. Rosenthal in 1959 by Thomas E. Marston., Script: Written by a single scribe in mercantesca script, above top line., and Watermarks: unidentified cherries (?) in upper margin, trimmed.

Description:
Acquired from H. P. Kraus in 1960 by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Brown calf, blind- and gold-tooled. Gilt edges. Title on spine: "Petrarca". Signed by "CR"., Illuminated by Antonio di Niccolo di Lorenzo. The decoration consists of an illuminated title page with full border, white vine-stem ornament on blue, red and green ground with white, blue and pale yellow dots, respectively, with a thin gold bar in all margins, forming a diamond (black) in inner and a roundel with a profile head of a young woman against blue sky with some clouds in the outer margin. In the lower border a medallion (erased) framed in gold and supported by four round-faced putti with multicolored wings in green and red. Superimposed on the border are a variety of multicolored birds, a lion and two putti. These animals are related to animals in contemporary Florentine manuscripts and perhaps reflect the use of a model book. Historiated initial, 10-line, gold, on blue green and red ground with white vine-stem ornament attached to the inner border, with a half-length portrait of Petrarch holding a book against a blue sky with white cloud formations. Six illuminated initials (ff. 143r, 155v, 159r, 168v, 176r, 178v), 6- and 5-line, gold on blue, red and green grounds with white vine-stem ornament extending into margin, and gold dots with hair-line extensions. On f. 143r, initial joined to partial border, same as above. Plain initials in blue, paragraph marks alternate red and blue. Headings in red., and Script: Written by Carlo di Palla Guidi in a round humanistic script, above top line.

Description:
Binding: Early quarter binding, undecorated ... leather and beech boards. Spine with three raised bands and remnants of a printed paper title label: "[Tr]attato / della Vit[a] / Cristian[a] / di F. / Simone / da Casci[a]". Remnants of one clasp, attached to the rear board. On the front board the large 18th century (?) pressmark written in black ink "25.", In art. 2 red headings, heightening of majuscules and 2- or 3-line plain initials in the same colour, with guide letters; some initials have a slight penwork decoration. The additional texts are not decorated., Original foliation in Arabic numerals. Quires strengthened at inner and outer sides by means of parchments stays, cut from an erased manuscript., and Script: Art. 2 is copied by one hand in Gothica Cursiva Libraria/Formata (Cancelleresca). The scribe Agniolo Donati is unrecorded. A slightly later hand copied the additional art. 1 in Gothica Cursiva Libraria. Art. 3 was added by a hand writing a rapid Gothica Cursiva Libraria/Currens difficult to decipher.
