Plain edges., ff. 1r-167r correctly paginated 1-333 and the pagination used in the detailed description, the remainder unnumbered, of ff. 170 originally, single leaves apparently canceled originally and cut away by the copyist after ff. 162 and 164, as noted in the detailed collation, but not noted in the description as the original pagination is consecutive., Mary Mellon, acquired from William Gannon (bookseller), New York, 1941; Mellon MS 145. - Manuscript on paper of a group of shorter works by Christopher of Paris (pseudonym), probably a Venetian alchemist. With John of Rupescissa, De consideratione quinte essentie.
- Description:
- Binding: Sixteenth century. Brown calf, the covers blind-ruled to a rectangular pattern, the large center rectangle diagonally ruled to a lozenge pattern, a single quatrefoil impressed in blind in each of the rectangles and lozenges so formed, edges partly renewed and rebacked in the style of the period of the binding with compartments formed by three double raised bands, a gold stamped title label in the second compartment from top reading: "CHRISTOPHE | DE PARIS | - | RUPESCISSA | MANUSCRIPTS | ITALY | 15TH C". The endpapers are modern insertions, though of old paper, and the binding, while of the period of the manuscript, probably had no original connection with this codex., Denis Duveen; Mellon MS 45, acquired with the Duveen collection. Gift of Paul and Mary Mellon, 1965., In Italian and Latin., No headlines, headings and some capitals in pale red., Script: Written by a single scribe in a late humanistic cursive hand sloping slightly to the right., and Watermarks: 1) anchor with ring atop the shank, all within a circle; 2) plain and ill-drawn anchor with thick flukes, the top of the shank forming a small, neat cross with the short stock. Both probably Italian papers, not directly comparable to the varieties illustrated by Briquet.

- Binding: Original Italian brown cloth over wooden boards, sewn onto three double leather thongs; the cloth is embroidered with silver thread to a design of stars, squares and maltese crosses. Gilt and gauffered edges., Headings in red. 1-line versals alternately in red and blue; 2-line flourished initials with marginal extensions alternately in red and blue, the penwork in the contrasting colour (the normal type of initials throughout the manuscript); 3-line flourished KL ligatures in art. 1; 5-line litterae duplices or initials in the style of litterae duplices with developed penwork at the opening of the various Hours in art. 2; 6-line ditto in art. 3; a 4-line flourished initial at the opening of the Mass of the Virgin in art. 5. - Binding: 15th-16th centuries, Italy. Sewn on four tawed skin, slit straps laid in channels on the outside of wooden boards and pegged. Gilt edges. Covered in brown goatskin with corner tongues, and blind-tooled with a ropework star inside painted (red) and blind-tooled circles inside a floral border, all with metallic annular dots. There are traces of four leaf-shaped fastenings, the catches on the lower board, the upper one cut in for fabric straps attached with star-headed nails. Rebacked twice., One illuminated intial, 6-line, gold against blue, green and pink ground with white vine-stem ornament, extending into inner margin to form a partial border; terminating at top and bottom in pen inkspray with buds in green and pink and gold balls with hair-line extensions. Plain initials, 3- to 2-line, in blue, mark text divisions; headings in pale red., Purchased from Lathrop C. Harper in 1949 by Thomas E. - [Notes on back pastedown refer to the Venetian monastery for Benedictine nuns, San Zaccaria], Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Original sewing on four tawed skin, kermes pink slit straps laced through tunnels in the edge of wooden boards to channels on the outside and nailed. A tawed skin endband core is laid in grooves and covered with plain, wound primary and red secondary embroidery. Spine: supports outlined and panels diapered with triple fillets. Covered in light brown goatskin with corner tongues, and decorated with interlace squares on their points within concentric frames. Trace of one fastening, the catch on the lower board and the upper one cut in for a red fabric strap attached with star-headed nails. The cover has been varnished., For main text divisions good blue initials with plain parchment designs and red penwork flourishes; elsewhere 2-line initials alternate red with blue harping designs and blue with red. On f. 11r red rectangular page filler at bottom of text space. Small plain 1-line initials alternate red and blue. Headings and paragraph marks in red. Majuscules stroked with yellow.
