"Design in an oval. Two men playing cards at a small round table. The man on the right pulls out an ace of spades from the five cards in his hand and shows it with a grimace of satisfaction. His opponent (left), in profile to the right, looks at it with an expression of consternation, frowning and opening his mouth wide. The pack and other cards lie on the table. The men are probably portraits. "Frontispiece to 'All the Talents', 18th edition, satirical verses by 'Polypus', i.e. E. S. Barrett, attacking the late Ministry. The print (Hogarthian in manner) has little relation to the verses, and is probably adapted from an earlier satire, perhaps on Bute. A creature with the body of a man and the face of an ape, with a tail, tramples on burning papers. It wears spectacles, a large wig, bands, old-fashioned laced coat (with a star), and tattered breeches. On one foot is a shoe; the left. leg is in a large jack-boot (? originally an emblem of Bute). In the right hand is a crozier with which he pulls down two books from a shelf: 'Magna Charter' and 'Coronation Oath'. Behind him a musket inscribed 'Army', the barrel pointing upwards, is firing a blast at the falling books. His left hand rests on a book or ledger, open on a book-stand, in which he writes with the feathered end of his pen. The page is headed 'Finance'; from the book hangs a paper: 'Country Dances'. The burning papers are inscribed 'Negotiation' [bis], 'Sinecures'. He is smoking a pipe from which thick clouds of smoke rise and obscure a profile bust portrait of Pitt. The verses, though published after the fall of the Ministry ... were written before it, and do not allude to the Catholic question, here indicated by the treatment of the 'Coronation Oath'. Nor are the peace negotiations, ... directly referred to. They contain a tribute to Pitt, and gibes at Petty, ... here illustrated. They went through nineteen editions in 1807 ....

Plate from the 'Anti-Jacobin Review', ii. 233: On the extreme right the Devil holds up a canvas, 'le Tableau Parlant', which terrifies twelve Irishmen grouped round an oblong table. In their alarm the heavy table has been overturned, some are on the ground, others (left) flee in terror. The Devil, who looks round the edge of his picture, wears a bonnet-rouge inscribed 'Anarchy'; labels hang from his horn: 'Blasph[emy]' and 'Parracide'. He says "Stew it well - It cannot be Overdone for you and me". In the picture, 'Irish Stew I A Favourite Disk for French Palates', two French soldiers superintend the boiling of a Revolutionary Pot, in which stand three naked Irishmen shrieking for mercy; one says: "Liberty of being Stewed"; the other, "Equality - all to be stewed en Masse". Above the table five harpies fly off with a tattered cloth inscribed 'Map of Ireland'. They are intended for the Directors, three having belts inscribed 'Tallien' (not a Director), 'Barras', and 'Le Paux'. On the table is a paper, 'United Irishmen'. The Irishmen make gestures of terror or despair. Most look at the picture, one looks upwards, saying: "Poor Erin How thourt torn to pieces by these five Harpies." A fugitive looks round to say "What your own A. O Connor too!" A lawyer (? Curran): "So much for Republicani[sm] and glorious Independence! No Money! No Lawyer." A monk: "By St Patrick a complete Catholic Emancipation." Three others say: "I now howl in Vain - We are all gone to Pot"; "Brother John [Bull] would not have treated us so -" ; "My Merits with the Republic should have saved me, but I find we must all stew together" [he is perhaps Grattan]; "A Radical Reform by Jasus". Beside the last speaker, a ragged peasant, lies a bundle of pikes, &c.
