Binding: Fifteenth century. Original sewing on five slit, tawed straps laced into wooden boards. Endband cores laid in grooves. Covered with white, tawed skin, blind-tooled with a St. Andrew's cross within panel borders. The covering leather is sewn around the endbands, from spine to edges, with a back-stitch. Traces of round bosses, probably brass, and of two strap and pin fastenings, the pins on the upper board., Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 573). Given to Yale in 1929 by Mrs. J. L. Leipziger., Plain initials in red and rubrics throughout., Script: Gothic cursive script of three hands. Scribe 1) ff. 1r-156v; Scribe 2) ff. 157r-274r; Scribe 3, Laurence of Mechlin, wrote ff. 274r-317r and dated the codex 1452., and Watermarks: similar to Briquet Ancre 381, Balance 2427, Tete de boeuf 15102.

Mst."., One historiated initial, f. 1r, 6-line, beige with foliage serif, red, against blue ground with white filigree, containing an apothecary (unguentarius) mixing ingredients in a mortar with two pestles. Numerous flourished initials, 3- to 2-line, alternate in red with blue, and vice versa, or often plain initials in red or blue. Running headlines in red and blue. Paragraph marks, alternating red and blue, appear sporadically (ff. 1r-36v)., and Script: Written by several scribes in small gothic bookhand.

Numerous initials, 5- to 2-line, alternate blue with red flourishes and vice versa. Running titles in red and blue, paragraph marks alternate red and blue. Binding: 14th-15th centuries, Spain. Original sewing on five tawed skin, double supports laced into beech boards. Plain, wound natural color endbands. Single parchment leaf (front) and bifolium (rear), from what appear to be two different Hebrew Bible manuscripts, serve as pastedowns and spine-lining; they have been cut out around the sewing supports. Yellow edges. Covered in what was originally blue tawed skin (now faded) with two fastenings, the catches on the lower board and the straps attached with star-headed nails. Traces of title (?) scratched onto skin of upper board., Part I: One illuminated initial, rubbed, f. 1r: blue with white highlights on dark red ground with white highlights; terminals of ground extend up and down as modest border in blue, dark red and gold. Flourished initials of various sizes, styles and quality: blue with red penwork designs, red with blue, red with purple (ff. 75r-119r) and red and blue divided with penwork in purple (e.g., f. 88v); some flourished initials with border extensions (e.g., f. 110v).
