Manuscript on parchment of Cyril of Alexandria's Glaphyra in Genesim, Books I-IV (first part of Glaphyra in Pentateuchum).
Description:
Binding: 19th or 20th century: brown morocco, both covers gold-tooled with a floral stamp, four times crosswise applied in the center. Spine with three raised bands, to which the gold-tooled leather of the 17th century binding has been pasted, with the inscription: “CIRILI / ALEXAND / OPUS / MS”. Marbled paper pastedowns., Cyril of Alexandria's Glaphyra in Genesim, Books I-IV (first part of Glaphyra in Pentateuchum). Latin translation ascribed to Iosephus.Due to the loss of two leaves (ff. 124-125) a part of the text preceding the final sentences is missing. A few 17th century annotations., and Script: copied by one hand writing Humanistica Textualis. Pale red headings, mostly not executed. Space for initials is provided, with guide letters, but initials are mostly not executed. On f. 1r a 6-line white vinestem initial with extensions in the upper and left margins; white vinestem decoration in the lower margin around a wreath, containing now a blank escutcheon. On ff. 37v (4 lines), 42r (6 lines) and 60r (4 lines) white vinestem initials of lower quality and in a different style.

Description:
Binding: ca. 1900. "Bound by Birdsall, Northampton" (blind-stamped inscription on the inside front cover): blond-tooled brown morocco over cardboard, spine with four raised bands. Gold-tooled title on spine in Gothic script: "Jacobus / Alexan/driae / Com-/pilatio / Metrice [sic] / distincta / Capitu-/lorum / MS. / xiv Cent.", MS 217 in the collection of Bernard M. Rosenthal, Berkeley, California. Purchased from him on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund., Numerous alternately red and blue paragraph marks. Alternately red and blue 2-line flourished initials with penwork in the opposite colours; there are 3-line initials of the same type at the beginning of each book in art. 1 and at the opening of art. 4 (in the latter case a red letter with mauve penwork). A 4-line flourished initial in the same colours with develped penwork at the opening of art. 1, and space for a similar one has been reserved at the opening of art. 3. There is space and there are instructions for the rubricator in view of the adding of headings in art. 2, but these have not been executed. The headings of artt. 1 and 3 have been deleted or rubbed off., Script: Copied in a small, highly abbreviated Gothica Semitextualis Libraria with southern features., and Uneven lower edges. First and last page dampstained, with loss of some text.

Description:
Binding: Limp parchment, consisting of a 17th century document in English, the blank verso of which is at the outer side. Gilt edges., First pages stained; from about f. 41 the lower outer corners of the leaves are damaged without loss of text., Red underlining of the lemmata. Red captions in the margins. 3-line red plain initial at the beginning of art. 1., and Script: Copied by one hand in very small Gothica Textualis Libraria, marked by d with a very long ascender, the southern form of tironian et, and occasional lengthening of the ascenders on the top line and the descenders on the bottom line.

The text is also accompanied by extracts from the gloss of Bernardus Parmensis on the Decretals of Pope Gregory IX; these were probably added ca. 1245 or later. and Written in Spain, perhaps soon after Johannes Teutonicus completed his text ca. 1218 and before 1234; the codex shows evidence of much early use. Several contemporary and later hands have added glosses in all margins and sometimes between columns of text.

Binding: Original brown leather over bevelled beech boards, both covers blind-tooled with fillets and small tools in ropework design. Sewn on three split leather thongs. Spine damaged. Remnants of three clasps, one at the top, one at the bottom and one at the side edge of the covers, each attached with three engraved nails to the front cover; quadrangular decorated brass catches on the rear cover, engraved with the initial “S” and each fixed with four nails., Headings in purplish red. Alternately red and blue paragraph marks and 1- and 2-line plain initials with guide letters. Decorated initials: f. 1r (Prologue), 7-line white vinestem initial followed by text line in fancy Capitalis; f. 2r (Part 1), 4-line Humanistic dentelle initial; f. 12r (Part 2), 4-line white vinestem initial; f. 18v (Part 3), 4-line Humanistic dentelle initial; f. 127v (Part 4), idem. Acquired in 1954 from C. A. Stonehill by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: ca. 1900, England. Red goatskin case with gold-tooled title "Valla In Poggium MS" and turn-ins. Gilt edges. Bound by Zaehnsdorf (London, 1842-1930)., Illuminated page (f. 1r) with partial border in outer and lower margins, white vine-stem ornament on predominately green and red ground, with some blue and white dots, framed by thin gold bars. In lower border, unidentified mutilated coat of arms, against blue ground. Seven illuminated initials, 4- to 2-line, gold, against blue, green and red grounds with white vine-stem ornament and white dots. Headings and marginal annotations in pale red., and Script: Written in a round humanistic script by a single scribe, above top line.
