"A corner of a room hung with unframed canvasses is a background for five men, all in profile to the left. Four closely inspect a picture of two vast pigs lying outside a thatched hovel. The foremost, an old man, peers through spectacles held reversed; in his left hand is a 'Catalogue of Pictures by Morl...'. He is identified in the 'Illustrative Description', 1830, and by Grego, as Captain Baillie, the engraver and connoisseur, by Wright and Evans conjecturally as J. J. Angerstein. Behind is a profile identified as that of Mitchell, a banker; next is Caleb Whitefoord, looking through his glass (see BMSats 8169, 8725, &c). Behind him stands George Baker, a patron of English water-colour painters [print collector and bibliophile], holding a paper on which the word 'Pigs' is legible. Standing apart, with a grossly fat nan pressed on a canvas which he raises from the wall, is Mortimer, a picture-dealer and restorer. He puffs and spits from coarse protruding lips a picture, the head and shoulders of an enormous boar. The pictures burlesques of Morland's manner: (1) A grossly fat butcher inspects a fat pig displayed by a farmer; (2) a man with a pitchfork drives pigs from a stackyard; (3) a yokel embraces a haymaker in a barn while a braying donkey looks in at the door; (4) a mounted sportsman at an alehouse door takes a glass from a hugely fat woman; (5) a ragged woman with an infant on her back tells a stolid farmer his fortune. On the floor, in front of the connoisseurs, an empty frame and a bulging portfolio labelled 'Sketches from Nature by G. Morland' lean against the wall."--British Museum online catalogue.

"Miss Farren (left) sits at her dressing-table, contemplating with rapt admiration an earl's coronet on a wig-block which is a caricature of Lord Derby's head. The voluminous draperies of her dress define a thin and angular figure, with a long thin neck. At her feet is an open book: 'Tabby's Farewell to the Green Room'; near it is a torn paper: 'Elegy to the Memory of an Unfortunate Lady. How Lov'd how valued once avails thee not To whom Related or by whom Begot.' A pad for inflating the figure (cf. BMSat 8388, &c.) lies across a stool (right). A 'Genealogical Chart of British Nobility' hangs from the dressing-table; the tree issues from the recumbent figure of 'Willm Conqr'; on it lies a small-tooth comb beside which is an insect. Behind Miss Farren are the closed curtains of an ornate bed, whose valance is decorated with the cap of Libertas and the words 'Vive la Egalite'. On the wall hangs a 'Map of the Road from Strolling Lane to Derbyshire Peak'; the places, from S. to N., are: 'Strolling Lane', 'Beggary Corner', 'Servility Place', 'Old Drury Common', 'Affectation Lane', 'Insolence Green', 'Fool-Catching Alley', 'Derbyshire Peak viz Devils Ar.' A jewel-box, bottles, &c, are on the dressing-table, some inscribed: 'Bloom de Ninon', 'For Bad Teeth', 'Cosmetick', 'For the Breath'. On the ground, under the valance of the table, is a large bottle of 'Holland[s]'. After the title: '"A Coronet! - O, bless my sweet little heart! - ah, it must be mine, now there's nobody left to hinder! - and then - hey, for my Lady Nimminney-pimmenney! [see BMSat 8888] - O, Gemmini! - no more Straw-Beds in Barns; - no more scowling Managers! & Curtsying to a dirty Public! - but a Coronet upon my Coach; - Dashing at the Opera! - shining at the Court! - O dear! dear! what I shall come to!'"--British Museum online catalogue.

"The undergraduate, cap in hand, stands with bent head facing a table at the opposite end of which stands the Master, obese, drink-blotched, and angry, delivering sentence. Six Fellows stand at the table, three a side, all glaring at the culprit, and much caricatured. A gaiter lies on the table. At the door, and immediately behind the undergraduate, stands a college servant, his hand on the door-handle, holding a long wand (like that held by the butler of Trinity College, Cambridge, in BMSat 7017). The room is bare with a panelled wall, the only furniture the table and a carved armchair behind the Master."--British Museum online catalogue.

"Burke, as a lunatic, is seated on straw dressed only in breeches, but wearing a rosary and crucifix round his neck; Major Scott stands behind him, shaving his head. His right wrist and left ankle are chained to a staple in the floor, the chains being inscribed 'The Censure of the Commons' and 'The Contempt of the Lords'. He clenches his fists and turns his head in profile to the right, towards a vision of Hastings, saying, "Ha! Miscreant! Plunderer! Murderer of Nundocomar! where wilt thou hide thy head now ?" Hastings walks in profile to the right, carrying a sack over his shoulder inscribed '£4000000'; he is about to enter the gate of 'St James's' from which two hands emerge to receive him labelled (in reversed characters) 'Welcome'. Clouds surround Hastings and the Palace, showing that this is a vision. In the background (left) is a gibbet from which hangs a figure rudely drawn, as if chalked on awall, representing 'Nundocomar'. ..."--British Museum online catalogue.
