"The interior of a bedroom, with Miss Gunning in bed (left), facing the spectator; a stout woman, her mother, holds her arm; both look round in alarm at a much-caricatured creature, Miss Minifie, who rushes towards them (right) from an open door, arms outstretched, gaping with staring eyeballs. Mrs. Gunning raises a leg in her surprise, breaking a bottle of 'Brandy' which with a glass had been concealed under her petticoats. Beneath the design is etched: 'What's the matter Auntee-Peg, what makes you put on such a long Face?"' "One of a set of four with the same signatures and imprint; the same two 'cits' are depicted throughout, one rather thin and fashionably dressed, wearing Hessian boots with pointed toes, and a cartouche-box which denotes the volunteer; the other is older, a fat John Bull in top-boots. The former has a poodle fantastically clipped, the latter a bulldog. The landscape probably gives a good idea of the NE. surroundings of London. The younger man advances on tiptoe towards the carcass of a horse beset by many crows: he holds his gun reversed, and it goes off peppering the posteriors of his friend who is being overturned by his dog while crossing a stile. An old sign-post points (left) 'To Hornsey Wood'; on it is a bill: 'Ball. . Powder & Shot'. "A scene representing the hustings at the Westminster election. Fox (right) stealthily enters a door leading to the side of the hustings, carrying on his shoulder a sack from holes in which guineas and a Garter jewel are issuing. On the left, on the hustings, Townshend stands between two supporters, resting an elbow on the shoulder of each: one (left) is a chimney-sweep, waving his brush, his shovel is inscribed 'Townsend'; the other is a butcher, waving his hat. Behind, the profile heads of Burke (left) and Hanger (right) face each other. A crowd is indicated at the back of the hustings, and a large banner inscribed 'Noble Townsend' is conspicuous. In front of Townshend is a poll-clerk who offers a Testament to a Jew who stands outside the hustings about to take the 'bribery oath'. Over his shoulders hangs a pair of breeches, under his arm is a hat inscribed 'Townsend'. On the door through which Fox enters is a placard: 'Liberty & Property Secured'. "Masqueraders stand closely grouped. A centre figure is an obese, aged, and capering Punch, playing a guitar. Two women are prominent, both are in profile to the left, and wear small masks which frame their eyes. One holds a wand and a book inscribed 'Magi', the other wears breeches and is very décolletée. Behind her is an ugly coarse-looking man, wearing a domino with a naturalistic mask resembling his own features. A man wears a bag-wig with large horns and carries a placard inscribed 'Horns to Sell'. One figure wears two realistic and complete masks, Janus-like--one that of a handsome woman, the other of an ugly man. Abstract:
A large and animated procession approaches the Grocers' Hall on the left, led by musicians and Wilkes who tosses coins to the crowd. In the first of the three coaches, shown as a child's or an invalid's chair, sits Sir Watkin Lewes, alderman and M.P. for the City, in the central one rides Pitt, behind him Sir Barnard Turner, alderman and Sheriff. The windows of the buildings are filled with spectators. On the right, above the vitrine to "Neat Wines" shop, hangs a large portrait of Lord Chatham. A burlesque rendition of the procession that took place on February 28.
