In French., Script: Written probably by one hand in Northern Gothica Textualis Libraria, with loops or bold and calligraphic extensions at the ascenders at the top line., Red heightening of the majuscules. 2-line flourished initials in red and blue, with extensions in the margins or in the intercolumnar space; the alternance of red and blue initials is mostly not respected., The manuscript is waterstained and considerably trimmed. Many lower edges are defective., and Binding: Ca. 1900 de luxe gold-tooled maroon morocco over cardboard in brown leather box, by Riviere & Son; gold-tooled armorial stamp in the middle of the front cover. Gold-tooled spine with five raised bands and title "ROMANT DE GUI DE WARWIC ET DE LA BELLE FELICE". Gilt edges.

On f. 55r, at the beginning of the history of Merlin, a male bust is drawn in the margin., and Binding: Original white leather over rounded oak boards; spine with four raised bands. In Latin., Script: Written in bold, early gothic bookhand by one scribe. Writing above top line, with tall ascenders in upper margin. Various corrections in a different hand (13th century). Guide-letters for illuminator throughout. Scattered short marginal glosses (brown ink) in a similar but smaller hand (13th century). Transcriptions of rubrics in a 15th-century hand., Richly illuminated in early gothic style. The uncial presentation text is set inside a double frame of orange and blue strips, the latter decorated with orange dots; the entire page crowned by an elaborate architectural canopy above four trilobe arches supported at the side of the frame by columns, in blue. There are twenty-three historiated initials orange or blue, decorated with stylized foliage in white, occasionally with biting dragon and curling vine serifs, set in or above orange frames, on gold grounds., Six large foliate initials, in a style dependent on Channel-School models: tight pink and blue vine scrolls with dragon terminals, in some cases on a green trellis, set in light orange frames, edged in black, against gold grounds; on f. 2v an I running the full length of the page (Preface); f. 66r (Joshua); f. 77r (Prologue, 1 Kings); f. 127r (Story of Susannah), f. 134r (Esther) and f. 144r (2 Maccabees), blue capitals with white highlights, filled with vine scrolls and framed as above, against gold grounds. 6- and 3-line initials, red and blue, with blue or red penwork respectively; a few (e.g., f. 98v) in a more elaborate manner with penwork in both colors. Binding: 18th-19th centuries, England. Brown calf, gold-tooled. Striped turn-ins., From the estate of Wilfred M. Voynich. Purchased in 1959 from H. P. Kraus by Thomas E. Marston., Part I: Two illuminated initials in parallel positions on f. 1r, beginning mid-page and extending almost to the bottom of the leaf. The first initial composed of a gold trellis edged in black with heads of a grotesque devouring the trellis at top and bottom, and foliage designs in green and white scrolling around the body of the initial against pink interior with white highlight and gold balls. The whole on a rectangular ground tapering to a point at bottom, with white designs. The second initial, somewhat narrower and less ambitious in design, gold edged in black with blue interior and thin white design in center and two rosettes, one at top, the other at bottom, and a third stylized floral motif in center, all on a pink ground in the same shape as the first initial. Also on f. 1r, 7-line initial divided red and blue with interior foliage designs in green and white on parchment ground, and red and blue penwork designs around exterior of letter. For major text divisions, fine medium blue and/or red initials, 9- to 6-line, with intricate penwork flourishes in red and blue, each accompanied by several lines of oversize letters for the first few words of text, with letters either in one color with designs in the other or alternating red and blue. Small penwork initials, red or blue with modest design in the opposite color, throughout. Headings, running headlines and vertical lines within text columns, in red. Remains of instructions to rubricator (some perpendicular to text in gutter) and guide letters for decorator., Part II: One gold initial, 4-line, with purple penwork designs on f. 194r. Blue initials with red penwork, 9- to 2-line, throughout. In Latin., Script: Written by a single scribe in liturgical gothic script., Carefully executed initials, 3-line, on blue or pink rectangles outlined in black, mark the beginning of each psalm; partial cusped borders, also in blue and pink, attached to each. Initials infilled with intertwining vines, often on gold ground, sometimes with small animals; modest use of gold dots inside rectangular grounds and borders. 1-line initials of blue with red penwork with blue dots and of gold with blue penwork and red dots. Line-fillers in combinations of red, blue and gold (various linear and flower designs)., and Binding: Nineteenth century. In Latin., Script: probably copied by two hands, both writing Northern Gothica Textualis Formata: A copied the Calendar, B all the rest in a more formal script in two sizes, except ff. 102r-103r, which are in a different hand. Rich decoration. Rubrics in gold. Calendar written in blue and gold. Majuscules stroked in yellow. Line fillers in gold and colour. Numerous 1-line versals (dentelle initials). 2-line foliate initials with marginal extensions, or with a one-margin gold and colour foliate bar border, extending into the upper and lower margins; some of them contain a human face, a flower or a geometrical design. 6-or 7-line historiated initials, always accompanied by a full gold and colour foliate bar border. Several marginal portraits of a woman (ff. 21r and 83r) are probably of the original owner., Elaborate illuminated miniatures, decorating a calendar, Short Hours of the Cross, Hours of the Virgin, Penitential Psalms, and the Office of the Dead. The manuscript also includes the beginning of the Gospel according to John, a litany, and petitions., and Binding: 20th century binding by Douglas Cockerell (1926): dark red morocco over pasteboard. Spine with five raised bands, with gold-tooled title “HORAE BEATAE / MARIAE VIRGINIS // MS. SAEC. XIV”. Green silk endbands. Binding: Nineteenth century. Reddish leather over cardboard; the covers blind-tooled with a double decorative frame, the inner one chequered, with circular dots on the intersections; small quadrangular decorative bosses in gilt (?) brass in the four corners and in the center of each cover. Spine with four raised bands. Two brass clasps attached to the rear cover, with catches on the front cover., Headings in red. 2-line (on f. 18v 3-line) initials were provided but were not executed; guide letters in the inner and outer margins. In art. 1, square spaces or roundels traced in ink have been provided in the text for illustrations, but the latter have only exceptionally been executed. No illustrations were provided in chapters 28-30 and 36-37. On f. 1v the text of chapters 31-35 is arranged in such a way, that a roundel containing a fully coloured female saint is placed in the center, and in the right-hand column a large space has been provided for a picture of the Cedar, the text being written around its stem. On f. 2r there is a drawing in crayon of a Pelican (very light, ch. 38), on f. 2v an ink drawing of a Raven (ch. 40), on f. 6r a crayon sketch of a Stork (ch. 47). In art. 2, similar spaces and roundels as in art. 1 were provided or traced within the text, all of them empty, except on f. 11v where there are crayon sketches of the Caladrius and the Pelican., Parchment soiled and in bad condition. Holes and irregular and damaged lower edges, the latter often repaired by means of strips of parchment; the final pages badly damaged, with loss of text., and Script: Copied by two hands writing a small Gothica Textualis Libraria, both having a tendency towards lengthening and making loops to the ascenders at the top line; A copied ff. 1r-7v and 17r-19v and is marked by conspicuous vertical decorative strokes at the top of r and long strokes on i; B copied ff. 8r-16v. Running headlines in red in artt. 3-5 in Gothica Textualis Libraria. In the margins of artt. 1 and 3-5 a contemporary hand has written numerous corrections and variant readings and has rewritten numerous words for which hand A apparently had used unusual or unclear abbreviations.
