Binding: ca. 1900. "Bound by Birdsall, Northampton" (blind-stamped inscription on the inside front cover): blond-tooled brown morocco over cardboard, spine with four raised bands. Gold-tooled title on spine in Gothic script: "Jacobus / Alexan/driae / Com-/pilatio / Metrice [sic] / distincta / Capitu-/lorum / MS. / xiv Cent.", MS 217 in the collection of Bernard M. Rosenthal, Berkeley, California. Purchased from him on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund., Numerous alternately red and blue paragraph marks. Alternately red and blue 2-line flourished initials with penwork in the opposite colours; there are 3-line initials of the same type at the beginning of each book in art. 1 and at the opening of art. 4 (in the latter case a red letter with mauve penwork). A 4-line flourished initial in the same colours with develped penwork at the opening of art. 1, and space for a similar one has been reserved at the opening of art. 3. There is space and there are instructions for the rubricator in view of the adding of headings in art. 2, but these have not been executed. The headings of artt. 1 and 3 have been deleted or rubbed off., Script: Copied in a small, highly abbreviated Gothica Semitextualis Libraria with southern features., and Uneven lower edges. First and last page dampstained, with loss of some text.

Binding: Limp parchment, consisting of a 17th century document in English, the blank verso of which is at the outer side. Gilt edges., First pages stained; from about f. 41 the lower outer corners of the leaves are damaged without loss of text., Red underlining of the lemmata. Red captions in the margins. 3-line red plain initial at the beginning of art. 1., and Script: Copied by one hand in very small Gothica Textualis Libraria, marked by d with a very long ascender, the southern form of tironian et, and occasional lengthening of the ascenders on the top line and the descenders on the bottom line.

Manuscript on paper of a commonplace book. The work contains four sections. (1) "Loci animadvertendi in legendi epistolis, ad quos etia[m] om[n]ia quae annotaderis referenda sunt." This lists types of epistles under eight headings, or "libri," but the extensive framework is very incompletely annotated. (2) "Here are written divers notes phrases words & sentences collected out of severall bokes. 15 Novembr 1586. A[nn]o Reg.ie Eliz. 28." This is actually a seventeen-page selection from the "A Touchstone for the Time" section of George Whetstone's A Mirrour for Magistrates.... (London, 1584). It is preceded by a two-line entry quoting Mary Queen of Scots as saying at Fotheringay, "I come not as a criminal." (3) "Epistolae commendatiae Praecepta," summarizing extracts from the Epistolae of Paulus Manutius. (4) "Quaedam collecta ex liber The Breviarie of Health, compiled by Andrew Boorde." Eight pages of various entries in English from Boorde's work, including descriptions of and remedies for "scurffe," greensickness, "sikness of the prisones, "chappe," and nosebleed.

Remnants of three clasps, one at the top, one at the bottom and one at the side edge of the covers, each attached with three engraved nails to the front cover; quadrangular decorated brass catches on the rear cover, engraved with the initial “S” and each fixed with four nails., Headings in purplish red.
