Abstract:
Enos Christman's journals describe his 1849 sea voyage around the Horn from Philadelphia to San Francisco, his work in the gold fields and for the Sonora Herald. Pasted into the back of one journal are newspaper clippings of Christman's letters to Pennsylvania newspapers from his vacations in southern California, dated 1891-1896. There is correspondence between Christman and his fiancée Ellen A. Apple, his patron Henry S. Evans, his companion DeWitt Clinton Atkins, his friend Enos Prizer, and others.

Three holograph notebooks containing diary entries relating to travel; barometrical recordings; and observations on the languages and customs of the Indians and the flora and fauna of Washington Territory and the Pacific Northwest written while Gibbs was working on the U.S. Army railroad survey and the survey of the International Boundary Commission. The first two notebooks contain a few miscellaneous drawings. The volumes are entitled "Indian Tribes 1853-1854," "No. II Journal & Notes, N.W.B.S. 1855-1858," and "Washington Territory Miscellaneous, Chiefly Natural History [ca. 1857]."

Osborn, 1976., In the preface to "The Compound of Alchemy" (Osborn fa16), Rabbards notes that he has "these fortie yeares amongst manie other most commendable exercises and inventions of so warlike Engines, founde out divers devices of rare service, both for Sea and land" and expresses his intention to "impart some other rare experiments of Distillations and Fire-Workes of great service, not hitherto committed in writing or put in practise by any of our nation." This apparently refers to Osborn a8, the only known copy of the work., Raphe (or Ralph) Rabbards, born slightly before 1531, published "The Compound of Alchemy" by George Ripley (see Osborn fa16) in 1591., and Signature on f. 1 of W. The journal describes an 1849 voyage from Boston to San Francisco via Cape Horn on the Brig Colorado with lenghty stops at St. Catherines, Bermuda and Valparaíso, Chile. True comments daily on the weather, living conditions, and the passenger's amusements, which included producing and reading aloud a weekly paper, The Boston and California Pioneer. True often discourses on religion and describes the characters of passengers and crew. The journal includes a passenger list and notes ships met or sited. True's diary ends before the ship reaches San Francisco.

For another account of this voyage see Samuel Brackett's Journal of a Voyage from Boston to California (WA MSS S-1417). and The journal is annotated in pencil in what seems to be a much later hand. There are several pages of text following the diary which date from the 1860s.
A daily journal of the voyage of the brig Otter, commanded by Samuel Hill from Boston to the Alaskan coast by way of the Sandwich Islands. Samuel Furgerson describes places visited, natives, and trade with the Indians, particularly along the Alaskan coast and Queen Charlotte Islands. The last entry comes from Thanikyloo Bay. The map, which is in color, shows the path of the brig Otter along the Northwest Coast of America., Gift of William Robertson Coe., Original binding., and Samuel Furgerson: ship's carpenter on trading voyage to the Pacific Northwest.

Autograph manuscript treatise in two parts, containing definitions and problems in mathematics. The first part, dated 1708, concerns arithmetic operations. The second part, dated 1710, concerns geometry and trigonometry, with sections on applications in construction trades and astronomy and with extensive sections on navigation.
