Manuscript on paper of a pocket-size codex containing discussions of painting miniatures in manuscripts. On ff. 1r-30v Mariani provides a list of colors and the recipes for each color; in the remainder of the text he discusses techniques for painting landscapes in perspective. The second portion of the treatise (ff. 84r-95v) is, according to the title-page, the work of Antonello Bertozzi (fl. ca. 1590). The focus of this section is on painting watercolor portraits rather than on painting landscapes. On ff. 97v-113v, miscellaneous additions in at least 3 hands, dated 1612-1627

Two fastenings with shell-shaped clasps on the upper board and pins in the edge of the lower. Rebacked., Decorated with several miniatures and borders in water and body color: f. i verso, full-page miniature of tomb in a landscape, with an epigraphic inscription. Arms above inscription: azure, a fess or; an inescutcheon azure, a bend wavy or. On f. 1r, a full frame, outer, inner and upper margins with bucrania, trophies, swags, jewels, arms and armor (including two shields: azure, a fess or; and azure, a bend wavy [Marcello]), in blue, pink, green and gold, framed in gold; lower margin, a parapet with a cornice, enclosing a cartouche with bust, supported by putti and flanked by the letters "A. A.", background filled with spiral flowing vines, pink, blue, green and gold, with brown hair-spray. Cartouches bearing inscriptions on ff. 53v, 82v, 105v. On f. 145v a scroll, written in red and blue letters festooned on a tree in a landscape, the ends supported by two putti. At the beginning of each novel, a 3- or 2-line initial, gold, against a purple or crimson ground with gold floral filigree; followed by several words in text script, gold against a crimson or purple rectangular ground., Script: Written by one person in bold italic., and Watermarks: crossed arrows buried in gutter.

In lower margin a coat of arms (damaged; probably: or, two columns gules); the letters B and C on either side in the bases of columns in inner and outer margins. The decoration of title page in bright red and green. Plain initials (some with simple foliage designs), headings, paragraph marks, pointing hands, and hands holding crosses or symbols of passions of martyrs (e. g., gridiron for Laurence), all in bright red, green, and/or black., Folio 1 damaged; no loss of text., Script: Written by several scribes in unruly mercantesca script, above top line. Initials with guide-letters: 1-line plain initials alternately red and blue; 2-line flourished initials in red with purple penwork and blue with red penwork; those on the first pages are 3- or 4-line. On f. 1r 11-line historiated initial on gold background containing a profile portrait of Jacopone da Todi with nimbus and holding medallion with the "Jesus"-monogram; the initial has floral extensions in the inner margin. In the lower margin a coat of arms (made illegible by means of black paint) in a wreath., and Binding: Ancient limp parchment. At the top of the spine in 17th-century handwriting: "Imni di F.
