Binding: sewn on, no covers., ff. 26-32 blank, not digitized., Ps.-Augustinus Hipponensis (Pseudo-Augustine), Sermones ad fratres in heremo, Italian translation of a small selection of the sermons by Agostino da Scarperia (c. 1320-end of the 14th century). Our manuscript contains the first eight sermons only., and Script: copied by a single hand in Italian Hybrida Libraria/Currens (Mercantesca); the final lines, on the singleton f. 25, are in a more rapid hand. There is space for 3-line initials (a 4-line initial on f. 1r) at the opening of the sermons, but these have not been executed. The headings open with a decorative majuscule S(ermone). Otherwise the manuscript is undecorated.

Abstract:
Manuscript on parchment (thick, holes, end pieces), in two volumes, of a collection of sermons by various writers, including Bernard of Clairvaux, Geoffroi Babion, Jacobus Berengarius, Ivo of Chartres, and Hugh of St. Victor. Written perhaps at the Cistercian abbey of Hautecombe to which it belonged. The manuscript may originally have been a single volume. and Written in the middle of the 12th century, perhaps at the Cistercian abbey of Hautecombe to which it belonged.

Acquired from C. A. Stonehill in 1957 by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Backs of quires of both volumes cut in at sewing stations. Sewn on three cords. Paper lining between supports on spine. Red edges. Both volumes half bound in brown mottled calf with bright pink paper sides and two red gold-tooled labels on each volume: "Manuscr. Homiliae Caes. Max. Cod. I [and II]" and "Saecul. XIII". Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 125, 128, 151, 153, 158, 159 and 197, all of Hautecombe provenance., Folios 1r and 158v stained with loss of text., Half bound in brown mottled calf with bright pink paper sides and two red gold-tooled labels on each volume: "Manuscr. Homiliae Caes. Max. Cod. I" The manuscript may have been a single volume before rebinding., Plain red initials, 4- to 2-line, some with small pearls added to the body of the letter. Spaces for rubrics remain unfilled., and Script: Written in late caroline minuscule by several scribes, above top line.

Manuscript on paper of a collection of sermons. The author is nowhere mentioned; the sermons are all in the learned style of Caracciolo (Robertus Caracciolus, Robertus de Licio OFM, 1425-1495), but only a few of them can be identified, so the authorship of most is not certified. With a list of impediments to Communion. The margins, inserted leaves and leaflets are covered with abundant additional material and notes in the same and in other contemporary hands, generally in Latin, some in Italian. In the text, the additions, and the notes a very large number of classical, patristic and medieval authors are quoted.

Manuscript binding containing 8 sermons by Zachary Grey delivered 1740-58 mostly at Lillington and Houghton-Conquest. Annotated with date and location of delivery on the first page of each sermon. Sermons prefaced by the verse(s) preached upon (from 1 Corinthians, Psalms, 1 John, Ecclesiastes, Proverbs). Enlightenment concepts of Reason and Nature incorporated in some of the sermons. and Zachary Grey was a Church of England clergyman, noted for his confrontation of dissenters. He served as rector of Houghton-Conquest, and vicar at St. Giles and St. Peter's, Cambridge.

Part II (ff. 35-46): Written in a script similar to that of Part I, but with less batarde shading. Part III (ff. 47-82): Written possibly by the same scribe as Part II. Part IV (ff. 83-99): Written in small cramped gothic script similar to those in I-III., Part I: Carefully executed red and blue divided initial, 8-line, on f. 1r; infilled and surrounded by delicate foliage designs in red and purple ink, on a green ground, with flourishes extending down inner border. Similar initial, f. 1v, without green ground and with blue scroll design for crossbar. Headings, paragraph marks, initial strokes, underlining, and Nota marks in red. Plain, wound endbands on vegetable fiber cores, the covering leather saddle-stitched around them. Covered in dark brown calf with round and lozenge-shaped tools in diamonds and triangles formed by intersecting fillets in a central panel in a double outer frame. One fastening, the catch on the upper board and the strap wanting. Turk's head knot placemarks on the fore edge. Rectangular label removed from upper edge of front cover; two modern brown labels, stamped in gold, on spine: "Bernardi Varia" and "M. S." Original front pastedown: lower portion of a parchment bifolium (Germany, 15th century) of the Doctrinale of Alexander of Villa Dei with lines 1056-79 visible on verso and 1520-44 on recto. Ca. 5 mm. between lines of text. Binding restored.
