Power is represented by a crown suspended in the cloud above, while pleasure represented on the right by two female musicians, one playing a flute and another a lute, while a third woman offers a bouquet of flowers. Above and behind the figures on the left is the ruin of a building. In the clouds on the right above the musicians, the triumph of faith over temptation is represented as the grim reaper with a scythe cutting down three kings whose crowns topple from their heads

The angel gestures with one finger both to heaven and the Virgin Mary as she approaches the sleeping Saint Joseph whose head is rests in slumber on his hand and elbow as he leans at his writing desk. He is dressed in blue and red ornamented with gold flowers. His other hand holds a flower. Above joseph is an image of the Virgin Mary who kneels in prayer before an open Bible. The cloud before here represents the Holy Ghost. In the foreground are two courting peacocks, the male with his tail fully fanned. In the distance a shepherd watches his flock in a meadow. In the distance a city, presumably Nazareth, is nestled in the hills

Dorothy Clement was born in County Durham in 1715, the daughter of Hammond Clement (1692-1733) and Priscilla Clement (-1739); when she arrived in London she became a milliner’s assistant. Due to her status, she was never able to marry Sir Edward Walpole (1706-1784) but with him had a son, Edward Jr. (1737-1771), and three daughters: Laura (1734-1813), who became the wife of Frederick Keppel, Bishop of Exeter; Maria (1736-1807) who married first James Waldegrave, Earl Waldegrave, and after his death, William Hanover, Duke of Gloucester; and Charlotte (1738-1789) who wed Lionel Tollemache, Earl of Dysart. A scene from the Beggar’s Opera as performed and perhaps witnessed by Hogarth. The scene (Act III, Scene II) is the last. Set in Newgate prison. At center stage, is the highwayman Macheath, chained (played by Thomas Walker) wearing red. Two women who believe they are married to him plead for his life as he is sentenced to the gallows. To his left, Lucy Lockit with her back to the audience (played by Mrs. Egleton) is dressed in blue. She pleads with her father the prison warden (John Hall). On his right Polly Peachum (played by Lavinia Fenton) dressed in white with a pink sash, pleads with her father, a dishonest lawyer and informant (played by John Hippisley). The actors are flanked by an audience members privileged to sit in boxes on the stage. Among these is John Rich the impresario of the play. Cf. Einberg

"Satire on the popularity of the Beggar's Opera in the form of a medley print. At top left a print shows two oval portraits, Lavinia Fenton as Polly Peachum on the left and Thomas Walker as Macheath on the right, two short columns of verse beneath. In the centre lies a print depicting a debased Parnassus: in the foreground muses drink from a barrel, one vomiting; a woman wearing a hat hands a basket to a muse sitting in a dust-cart drawn by a Pegasus; a cornucopia lies upended on the ground: in the background, is a boxing match surrounded on two sides with a temporary stand from which flies the flag of St George and to the right of which a bull and a bear are preceded by Apollo playing a fiddle; beneath are four lines of verse describing the scene. Behind the Parnassus print another shows the ghost of Jeremy Collier rising from his grave holding the pamphlet in which he had condemned "The Immoratlities of the English Stage", four lines of verse beneath. This print is overlaid by a smaller oblong print with four verses and portraits of Caleb D'Anvers (Nicholas Amhurst) Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope and Lavinia Fenton (as Polly Peachum). On the left is a print in which Democritus and Heraclitus examine a globe together, eight lines of verse beneath. In the centre is an engraved address 'To Polly Peachum' quoted, according to the earlier state from The Daily Journal, April 19, 1728. At lower left is a print with a stage where a Apollo descends on a cloud to judge between rival singers (Faustina and Cuzzoni) to whom a group of gentlemen with asses' ears listen without judgement, two columns of verse beneath explain the scene. On the right, a scene by a river where a balance has been set up in which the Beggar's Opera outweighs Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Addison, Nicholas Rowe and Thomas Otway; the personification of trade collapses in the arms of George II, assisted by Queen Caroline; verses beneath claim that the popularity of the Beggar's Opera is indicative of the sorry state of the country.
