Blind-tooled with intersecting diagonal fillets with roses, two-headed eagles, crowned swans and fleurs-de-lis in the compartments, inside an outer frame. Trace of a catch on the upper board; edge of the lower one cut in for a strap. Rebacked and clasp wanting. Front and back flyleaves, formerly pastedowns, from a liturgical manuscript (Germany, 12th-13th centuries) containing Office of the Dead. Responses to the first five lessons are Qui lazarum, Heu michi, Ne recorderis, Domine quando, Peccantem me cottidie.

Original sewing on four tawed, slit strap supports laced through tunnels in the edge of flush beech boards to a groove on the inside and pegged. The spine is square, back cornered, and lined between sewing supports with stubs of vellum that extend on the inside of the boards (in front: partially visible document in Latin, written in 14th/15th-century chancery hand; in back: Missal, Germany, ca. 1150, initials in orange, with neumes, small format: part of a bifolium). Plain, wound endbands on tawed cores which sit on the spine. Covered in tawed (?) skin, originally white, with a small tab of a single layer of skin at head and tail. Five flower-shaped bosses on each board and two strap-and-pin fastenings, the pins on the upper board, and both boards cut in to accomodate the straps. Rodent damage, and all but two bosses wanting. Most quires reinforced in center with narrow strips of parchment, including portions of a leaf used for pen trials (15th century); and of an unidentified text written in batarde with a pen-and-ink drawing (15th century). On outside of upper cover, written in ink: "Super epistolis dominicalibus/ Sermo de preceptis".

Paragraph marks and slashes between sentences, also in orange., and Binding: 16th-17th centuries. Rebinding? Sewn on three vegetable fiber, double cords, the previous sewing caught up. No endbands. The cords are laced and pegged into oak boards. Between the cords the spine is lined with vellum strips which extend into the inside of the boards. Covered in reddish-brown calf, blind-tooled with a vine scroll St. Andrew's cross set in a panel border of the same on the lower board, concentric panels, two with vine scrolls on the upper. There is a brass catch on the upper board, the stub of a vellum strap attached to the lower one. The leather is wanting in the spine area.
