A view of the interior of a busy French barracks shows a more domestic than military atmosphere although weapons and other gear adorn the walls and lay scattered on the floor. The scene includes a woman nursing a baby (right) as another child plays at her feet. Beside her another woman holds up a mirror so that an officer can admire his reflection from both the front and back. A third woman (left) cuts an officers toe nails as a barber dresses his long queue; another officer has his hair powdered. In the background a man in his night shirt sits on the side of his bed as he stretches his arms and yawns.

"A stout and ragged woman, typical of St. Giles, bawls her broadsides inscribed: 'Last Dying Speech and Confession of the unfortunate Malefactors who were executed this Morning'. She stands full-face, one hand to her cheek, a pouch suspended from her neck hangs over her apron. She wears a cloak, and one foot is bare. Behind her is the corner of a house; in the doorway stands a young woman holding an infant; a little boy beside her looks up at the bawling woman, as does a dog. In the middle distance a little boy takes a handkerchief from a pedestrian's pocket. Behind (right) are houses."--British Museum online catalogue.

"In a large room lit by candles in sconces, a round game is in progress. The guests are ladies, undergraduates, and elderly parsons, some sit in a circle, while others look over their heads. An elderly parson grovels on his hands and knees, putting his head under the petticoats of a lady who sits (left) with her hands raised in surprise. He acts at the direction of a boy (Prince William of Gloucester) wearing the gown of (?) a fellow commoner over a coat with a star, who stands (right) in profile to the left, stretching his right arm with an autocratic gesture; a spaniel licks his feet. A stout parson seated behind him on the extreme left scowls and clenches his fist at the scene. The lady (the Duchess of Gloucester) sits between a fashionably dressed undergraduate wearing the gown of (?) a fellow commoner, and a stout parson who holds up his hands in astonishment. The undergraduates and some of the parsons appear amused, others frown disapprovingly. On the extreme left is a small round table on which are two candles and playing-cards."--British Museum online catalogue.
