Binding: ca. 1900. "Bound by Birdsall, Northampton" (blind-stamped inscription on the inside front cover): blond-tooled brown morocco over cardboard, spine with four raised bands. Gold-tooled title on spine in Gothic script: "Jacobus / Alexan/driae / Com-/pilatio / Metrice [sic] / distincta / Capitu-/lorum / MS. / xiv Cent.", MS 217 in the collection of Bernard M. Rosenthal, Berkeley, California. Purchased from him on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund., Numerous alternately red and blue paragraph marks. Alternately red and blue 2-line flourished initials with penwork in the opposite colours; there are 3-line initials of the same type at the beginning of each book in art. 1 and at the opening of art. 4 (in the latter case a red letter with mauve penwork). A 4-line flourished initial in the same colours with develped penwork at the opening of art. 1, and space for a similar one has been reserved at the opening of art. 3. There is space and there are instructions for the rubricator in view of the adding of headings in art. 2, but these have not been executed. The headings of artt. 1 and 3 have been deleted or rubbed off., Script: Copied in a small, highly abbreviated Gothica Semitextualis Libraria with southern features., and Uneven lower edges. First and last page dampstained, with loss of some text.

Description:
A series of illuminated leaves have been cut out; only the initials at the opening of Books 2, 5, 8, 9 and 10 are preserved. The initials are in Lombard style, pink letters on a blue square background, both decorated with white penwork, and have acanthus extensions of green, orange and yellow in the margin. The decoration is different in each initial; the one on f. 8v contains four yellow flowers. There is no space for a heading at the opening of Books 2 and 5; one line is left free for headings at the opening of Books 8-10, but headings have not been entered., Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Blind-tooled brown leather (worn) over slightly rounded beech boards, part of the front cover and the entire spine missing. Worm holes, especially in the rear board. Sewn on three split leather thongs. On the covers a triple frame of four double fillets; the space between the middle and the inner frame filled with interlace design; the four corners of the central panel are decorated with quarter circles of fillets filled with the same design; in the middle an oblong cartouche; on the front board part of the damaged original cover has been replaced by brown leather blind-tooled with a different interlace design. Marks of four clasps attached to the front board; two lily-shaped brass catches remain, fixed by means of three nails to the outer side of the rear board. On the blank wood of the front board there is a fragmentary inscription in ink and large script (upside down, 16th century?)., and Script: Copied by one hand writing Southern Gothica Semitextualis Libraria/Formata, using the two forms of d. The opening majuscule of each verse is placed in a separate column. The scribe sometimes adds hairline extensions in the upper margin to letters on the top line; the loops of these occasionally contain a sketchy human face.

Part II (ff. 52r-80v): Written in minuscule, large and rather careless, by Scribe 2 of part I; marginal and interlinear notes by same hand. Part III (ff. 81r-88v): Written in Greek minuscule, small and very neat (tops of letters close to but not touching ruling), by Scribe 3; marginal and interlinear notes in red by original scribe; notes in brown by a different hand. Part IV (ff. 89r-129v): Written in minuscule, large and rather careless, by Scribe 4, who adds flourishes in the margins; a few marginal notes by a later hand. Part V (ff. 130r-198v): Written in minuscule by several scribes: Scribe 5 (ff. 130r-176r), a small neat hand; Scribe 6 (ff. 177r-198v), a large and progressively more careless hand; f. 176v by a small, neat later hand. A few notes in margins by a later hand., Part I: Diagrams, labelled by the original scribe: syllogisms, consisting of geometrical figures and other groups of curved or straight lines. One simple 2-line initial in red; line-fillers and heading also in red. Part II: Contains a few diagrams of syllogisms. Title in red crossed out and rewritten in blackish-brown; one 2-line initial in red. Part III: Four-line initials in red, with floral ornaments; red also used for headings, notes of original scribe, and diagrams of syllogisms. Part IV: Many diagrams of syllogisms with labels by the original scribe; some doodles in the margins. Part V: Spaces left for initials within the text were never filled., Water damage on ff. 9r-16v and ff. 161-174; Parts I and III eaten by worms. The pattern of the damage suggests that the parts of the manuscript were not originally bound together., and Binding: 18th-19th centuries. Brown calf blind- and gold-tooled.
