- Manuscript on paper (sturdy) of Iohannes Herolt OP (d. c. 1468), Sermones de tempore, incomplete: from the first Sunday of Advent till the fourth Sunday after Easter.
- Description:
- Binding: 15th-16th centuries. Parchment over light wooden boards; leather spine with three raised bands; marks of two clasps. At the top of the rear board there is an excavation for the staple to which a chain was attached. On the spine parchment label with the handwritten title (19th century?) “JOHANNES HEROLT / Sermones Discipuli / De Tempore / saec. XV. 1436.” At the top of the rear cover close to the spine a printed paper label containing space for a shelfmark covering a large capital “W”; the handwritten shelfmark is “5867”., Leaves are badly waterstained in the outer lower corner in the second half of the manuscript., Red stroking of majuscules and underlining, red plain generally 3-line initials., and Script: Copied probably by one scribe writing Gothica Cursiva Libraria. When the first letter on a page is a majuscule it is as a rule made larger, with some calligraphic development.

- Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Parchment stays are adhered inside the quires. Rear pastedown (now lifted): parchment leaf from a lectionary, Italy (North?), 1050-1100; a parchment leaf, perhaps from the same manuscript, is concealed under front paper pastedown. Each leaf, with a stub, is folded around the front and back flyleaves, sewn, and glued down under the pastedowns. Original sewing on five tawed skin, slit straps laid in channels on the outside of beech boards and nailed. Yellow edges. Plain wound, natural color endbands are sewn on leather cores. Covered in brown calf with narrow corner tongues. There is a large, eight-petalled fitting in the central blind-tooled panel and four corner fittings have flower and agnus dei designs on them. The concentric outer frames are filled with rope interlace or small roses. The Marcello arms were stamped on each board on an inlaid leather shield which is wanting on the upper board. Spine: bands outlined with triple fillets, an X of three fillets in the panels. Four fastenings, the catches on the lower board, the upper one cut in for red fabric straps, attached with star-headed nails., Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 3008). Purchased from H. P. Kraus in 1956 by Thomas E. Marston., Fully illuminated title page, f. 6r. Floral border in inner and upper margin, black inkspray with blossoms, green, blue and purple with white highlights and gold balls. Bar border between text columns, gold and red, extends from buds (mauve, green and blue with white highlights) with stylized foliage, purple, blue and green and gold with white highlights; surmounted in upper margin by half-length figure of Virgin with Child. In outer margin, elaborate partial border of stylized foliage and flowers, green, blue and purple with white and yellow highlights and gold balls, framing central wreathed medallion with triton blowing a curved horn, on gold ground with penwork filigree. In center of lower border, arms of the Marcello family of Venice (azure, a bend wavy or) on deep red ground within wreathed medallion, both with yellow highlights. Arms symmetrically flanked by 2 putti plucking fruit from wreathed medallion and holding rods, green, blue, and purple with scrolls bearing the mottoes "sola virtus" and "dulcia poma" in red, and two triton-putti, one playing a flute, the other a stringed musical instrument. One historiated initial, 6-line, of stylized foliage in green, purple, and blue with white filigree on gold ground, with a half-length figure of a crowned and bearded man, perhaps the Emperor Augustus. The design of the upper and inner border and of the historiated initial is conservative in style and close to the work of Leonardo Bellini., Script: Written in fere-humanistic script by a single scribe, above top line., and Watermarks: Briquet Arbalete 746.

- Manuscript, on parchment, in at least two hands, of the commentary on the fourth book of Peter Lombard's Sentences by Petrus de Tarantasia's (later Pope Innocent V). This manuscript is a palimpsest; the parchment is from at least three unidentified thirteenth century Italian manuscripts. The first, apparently a glossed legal text, is most apparent at f21-22v.

- Binding: Original binding: brown leather over rounded wooden boards, with some worm-holes, the outer lower edge of the rear board broken off; both covers blind-tooled with a frame and diamond pattern of double fillets, the diamonds decorated with three different stamps: a large quadrangular stamp with a quatrefoil, a circular stamp with a six-pointed star and a circular stamp with a rosette; in the triangles a small circular stamp containing a trefoil. Hinges broken. Spine with four double raised bands and braided leather headbands. Remnants of two clasps attached to the rear cover. On the lower edge the ca. 1500 title “Figure morales [?]” written in ink close to the spine is faintly visible. Parchment pastedowns. The front pastedown consists of (1) a notarial document in Latin, dated 6 Jan. 1428, written in Gothica Cursiva; (2) a leaf, partly covered by the preceding document, from a Formulary of Canon Law, 14th century, written in Gothica Cursiva Antiquior. The rear pastedown consists of fragments of two bifolios from a 13th-century Latin moral treatise, written in Gothica Textualis Libraria and containing innumerable Biblical quotations., Collection of Bernard M. Rosenthal, Berkeley (MS 175). Purchased from Rosenthal on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund., ff. 151r-156v, 184r-192v, 231v-241v foliated but otherwise blank, not digitized., In the first section, copied by hand A, heightening of majuscules, underlining, paragraph marks and headings (in larger script), all in red; some headings, in black, are underlined in red and placed in a rhomboid frame in the same colour; 2-3-line plain initials in red, with guide letters; the 3-line initial on f. 1r is framed in red; the initial on f. 169r has rudimentary flourishing in the same colour. The final section, copied by hand B, is undecorated, although spaces for initials were provided., Script: Two contemporary scribes: A copied ff. 1r-204v in Gothica Semihybrida Currens; B copied ff. 206r-231r in Gothica Hybrida Currens., and Some pages badly damaged by the acid ink.
