Manuscript on paper (sturdy but of uneven weight; no watermarks, wavering chain-lines ca. 53 mm. apart) of a collection of excerpts from Biblical commentaries and sermons by patristic writers. Mainly drawn from Remigius of Auxerre, Expositio super Matthaeum; and Bede, Expositio super Lucam. Also includes texts by Leo, Gregory, Gualterus Anglicus, Augustine, Anselm, Ambrose, and Boethius. Sermons written for feast days and about the Passion of Christ.

Binding: Date? Square, flush boards. Trimmed out turn-ins suggest a late date. Covered in vellum with contents and a compass-drawn circle on lower cover., Initials (3-line), paragraph marks, underlining and strokes on 1-line capitals in red., and Script: Written mostly by one scribe, perhaps over a period of time, in a small gothic book hand with many abbreviations. Mottled calf case, gold-tooled., Borders cut out on ff. 1r, 45r, and 79r, replaced with parchment, with initials and borders partially restored., Illuminated by Cristoforo Cortese, ca. 1420. Fine historiated initial (12-line) on f. 1r, the author seated at a lectern, pink, purple, green, red, and blue foliage on a gold ground, edged in black, with delicate white highlights; an exuberant vine and foliage border in three margins; the upper margin with a bar, gold and blue, with white highlights. Eight illuminated initials (9- or 8-line) on ff. 14v, 29v, 45r, 61r, 79r, 98v, 115r, 132r in the same style, borders in outer margin. Fine penwork initials throughout, blue with red penwork or vice versa (7- to 4-line). Several lines following initials written in ornate majuscules widely spaced on every other line, filled in with sepia penwork (some left unfinished, especially near end of manuscript). 2-line initials, blue with red or red with blue penwork, less ornate than above. Argumenta of Guarino of Verona in red rustic capitals preceding each title; spaces for decorative initials never filled., Binding: Sixteenth century (?). Vellum stays. Original sewing on three slit, tawed straps. Primary, plain and secondary, beaded endbands on twisted, tawed cores, laid in grooves and pegged or nailed. Spine lined with tawed skin, mostly lacking. Straps laced and pegged or nailed into beech boards covered in (originally) brick-red leather, blind-tooled with an inscription in a border around an inner panel of overlapping circles interspersed with dots. Four flower-shaped bosses on each board and two catches on the lower one. Two bosses and clasp straps wanting., Watermarks: similar to Briquet Lettre R.8941 and Harlfinger Fleche 12., and Written in humanistic script by three scribes. The principal scribe, Franciscus Seroddi Centinomius Phylaretus, wrote ff. 1r-72v and 79r-84v; he signed the manuscript on ff. 72v and 84v. Binding: Twelfth century, Italy. Original sewing on two tawed pigskin slit straps. The sewing supports and endband cores are laced through a tawed skin spine lining (from a palimpsest?) which extends about 50 mm. on either side and is turned in at head and tail. There is a fragment of finely woven cloth caught up by the lower sewing support and kettle stitch. Chevron endbands on tawed skin straps, one of which extends across the lower side under the lower turn-in. The lower side is reinforced with two irregular pieces of vellum. A flush, tawed skin cover with overlapping corners and irregular turn- ins, wide at the fore edge. Stubs of fastenings which are extensions of the supports. Contemporary title in ink on upper cover: "liber intitulatur de habitu monachorum". Decorative panel containing a drawing of an unidentified animal smeared blue and/or green within a border of brown circles, on lower side., One decorated 5-line initial (rubbed) on f. 1r, constructed of interlacing bands in parchment, outlined in brown ink against an irregular red ground. Plain red initials, some of which are drawn vertically rather than upright, and often with small red pearl designs, appear to be executed by many different hands. Binding: Sixteenth century (?). Undecorated orange-brown sheepskin over pasteboard, the spine with three raised bands. Pastedowns and flyleaves from four leaves of an 11th-century manuscript, containing part of the Office for the burial of a monk., In Latin., Numerous red paragraph marks in the left margins. The treatment of the headings is not consistent. 2-line (rarely 3-line, on f. 1r 4-line) initials in red at the head of all major subdivisions; they are plain initials on ff. 1r-30r, often flourished initials (black or red penwork) from f. 31r onwards, but the flourishing appears to have been blotted out., and Script: Copied by two scribes. Hand A (ff. 1r-30r, 14) writes a careful Gothico-Humanistica Textualis Libraria; Hand B (ff. 30r, 15-91v) writes a more rapid Gothico-Humanistica Cursiva Libraria/Currens. Alternately red and blue paragraph marks. Headings in red. Gothic plain initials in red or blue, normally 3 lines, sometimes 2 or 4 lines. The first page, now missing except for part of a stub, had a border decoration in ink., Binding: Original binding in bad condition, made at the time the manuscript had more than twice the thickness it has now: undecorated brown pigskin over wooden boards. Bound on three double cords. The binding was strengthened by means of strips of textile, now loose. These and the leather turn-ins show the offset of a page of a 12th-century Latin manuscript from Italy. Remnants of two clasps attached to the front cover, with two trapezoid brass catches on the rear cover., Numerous pages have been torn out after f. 84. The top inner section of f. 1 is missing. All pages water-stained, seriously affecting the lisibility of the text., and Script: Copied by one hand in Humanistica Cursiva Libraria under Gothic influence. The scribe often writes the last letters of the final word at the bottom line in vertical sense. Starting f. 40r the descenders at the bottom line frequently have enormous fanciful extensions (loop-shaped, in the shape of a bird [ff. 54v, 65r], etc.).

Binding: Original Italian brown leather over thin wooden boards, the covers blind-tooled and decorated with gold dots. Spine with three raised bands. Remnants of two clasps, attached to the front cover by means of brass nails with engraved heads; palmette-shaped thin brass catches fixed to the rear cover with three nails each. The pastedowns and flyleaves are covered with carefully written notes and quotations on grammar, morals, education, etymology and meaning of rare words, variant readings in classical texts, etc., Script: Copied by one hand in careful Humanistica Textualis., and Space for headings was provided at the head of each Satire, but the headings were not executed. Satt. 2-16 open with a 3-line (6-line Satt. 6 and 7) plain initial (Capitalis) in blue. On f. 1r (Sat. 1) 6-line white vinestem initial integrated in a three-margins left border in the same style and colours; in the lower section of the latter, between two birds, there is a damaged coat of arms in a wreath. Covers and flap are blind-tooled with frames and lozenges of quadruple fillets, decorated with small circular tools either single or in clusters, and a full border consisting of a scroll motif. At the top of the front cover, in black ink, Capitalis ca. 1500: “Aur. (?) Augustini opus”. Parchment flyleaves. On the front flyleaf verso a Table of Content written in red by hand A, recording artt. 1-7 only, under the title “Que in hoc libello inserte sunt”., Headings in purplish red. Spaces for 1- or 2-line initials have been reserved throughout the codex (in artt. 1-3 with guide letters), but these have not been executed, except in artt. 8-10, where they have been clumsily written in black ink in the left margin. At the opening of art. 1, 3-line half inset Humanistic dentelle initial on a square background in green and blue decorated with silver and gold penwork. It has floral extensions with gold balls in the upper and inner margin. In the lower margin of the same f. 1r, between three similar floral decorations, a circular medallion containing the coat of arms of the Ugolini family of Florence (parti per bend, or on azure, with two lions passant counter changed, surmounting)., and Script: Two hands, both writing a very small Humanistica hesitating between Semitextualis Currens and Cursiva Currens. The covers are two 13th-century parchment manuscript fragments over pasteboard, the spine consisting of a modern blank strip of parchment with the inscription in handwriting imitating early Roman type: “1778. Liber Priapeorum”. The fragments are complete leaves from one manuscript, written in small Gothica Textualis Libraria (Littera Parisiensis); they contain a scholastic treatise in Latin on virtues. Beinecke Fund., In the original parts all initials are missing; at the opening of art. 6 the upper half of f. 17r is blank (in view of a picture which was not executed?) and a later hand has entered a large and coarse initial “C” (8 lines) containing a human face; in that art. there are guide letters for the small initials which were intended to open each entry; a few of these initials were added afterwards. The initial planned at the opening of art. 7 is 6 lines high. The opening lines of art. 1 are in a large fanciful display script overdecorated with flourishes and almost illegible. Binding: 16th century light brown leather over wooden boards, both covers blind-tooled with a double frame of multiple fillets, the inner frame divided by two diagonals. Small engraved bronze bosses at the four corners of the inner frames. Remnants of two clasps attached to the front board, with decorated brass catches on the rear board. Rebacked., On folio 1recto there is a 17-line historiated initial, showing the author presenting his work to Emperor Frederick II on horseback. The initial has been erased and the scene is hardly recognizable., and Script: copied by one hand in Southern Gothica Textualis Libraria/Formata (Rotunda).

A contemporary hand has numbered the Books in the following way: Book I (f. 1r): “Terzo”; Book II (f. 7r): “Quarto”; Book III (f. 13r): “Primo”; Book IV (f. 19r): “Secondo”. and Script: copied by a single hand in Southern Gothica Semitextualis Libraria; the first majuscule of each strophe written between the double bounding lines. The four books open with a 3-line red plain initial with or without interior reserved shapes.

Binding: 20th century grey paper binding. On the front cover an 18th century label with the inscription “Insegnamento per pictori ed doratori”., Recipies, in mediocre Latin, for the preparation and application of gold, silver and colours, dyeing leather, removal of stains, etc. The manuscript also includes an Easter Table for the years 1431-1530, a Lunar Table for the Nineteen Years Cycle 1432-1450 and following Cycles, and prophecies on the pope and the emperor by the unrecorded Iacobus de Cantone de Bononia (Giacomo Cantone of Bologna) and (probably) others., and Script: the main text is copied by one hand in Gothica Semitextualis Libraria. Article 4 is copied by a similar hand writing Gothica Hybrida Libraria/Currens. The Italian headings to the tables of articles 2-3 are written in very small Gothica Semitextualis Libraria. Article 5 is an addition in large Southern Gothica Textualis Libraria. The texts are undecorated. The tables of article 23 are traced in black ink.
