Acquired from C. A. Stonehill in 1957 by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: 1800-1810, Italy. Half bound in mottled brown calf with bright pink paper sides. Two gold-tooled, brick red labels on spine: "Greg. Pape. in Ezechiel." and "Saecul. XIII". Red edges. Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 125, 128, 135, 151, 153, 158, 197, also from the Cistercian abbey of Hautecombe., Many leaves damaged along outer edges, now repaired, but with loss of text; stained throughout., Script: Written by multiple scribes in spiky early gothic bookhand., and Spaces left unfilled, f. 1r, for initials and headings at beginning of prologue and text. Decorative monochrome initials and headings, which extend the width of columns, of modest quality, in red (many oxidized). Minor initials, 5- to 2-line, some with simple penwork designs, headings, initial strokes in red.

Script: Written in bold Praegothica marked by strong bifurcation at the top of the ascenders, frequent use of lengthened i, unusual ct-ligature and the Southern form of tironian et., The inner margin is trimmed, damaging part of the initial on the recto. Both pages are stained and the recto (hair side) is worn., and The text opens with a 6-line decorated initial P, half inset, with long tail in the margin in red and blue.

Binding: Nineteenth century, England. De luxe, gold-tooled green morocco over cardboard; each cover framed by rich gold-tooling imitating the decorated initial on f. 1v; turn-ins gold-tooled. Gold-tooled spine with repeated motif in the same style and title: “GREGORII / PASTORALIS / M.S.”. Gilt edges., Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (MS 14872)., Headings in red, missing from f. 12v onwards. 1-3-line plain initials in red of various shades. On f. 1v very large (c. 25 lines) decorated Romanesque initial “P” in red., Holes and defective corners, many repaired; the lower margins of ff. 63 and 91-92 are repaired by means of a strip of parchment; the lower margin of f. 93 is cut off. The manuscript is heavily trimmed at the top. First and last pages very soiled., and Script: Copied by various scribes writing Praegothica, difficult to distinguish from each other because of the uneven level of execution of their hands.

Binding: Between 1800 and 1810, Italy. Half bound in brown calf with bright pink paper sides and edges spattered bluish green. Two green, gold-tooled labels: "Gregorii. M/ Pastoralis/ Manuscrip" and "Saecul XII". Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 128, 135, 151, 153, 158, 159, and 197, also from the Cistercian abbey of Hautecombe., Part I: Decorative initials, 3- to 2-line, in black, with simple pen designs and small "pearls" on the thin parts of the letters, on irregular grounds of pale yellow wash. Initial strokes and plain line-fillers in pale yellow (initial strokes in red on f. 9r presumably added by the rubricator of ff. 1-8). A series of red dots (also a later addition?) outline the ground of initial on f. 18v. Explicit on f. 80r brushed with yellow wash. Part II: Plain monochrome initials, 3- to 2-line, in red or blue. Spaces for rubrics left unfilled; guide letters., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-80): Written by a single scribe in a well formed late caroline calligraphic minuscule. Binding: Sixteenth century, Italy. Original sewing on three tawed skin, kermes pink, slit straps laced through tunnels in the edge to channels on the outside of beech boards and pegged twice. Yellow edges. Plain wound endbands are sewn on tawed skin cores laid in grooves on the outside of the boards. Spine is lined with leather between supports. Covered in brown goatskin, blind-tooled with a triple cross in a central rectangle in concentric frames. Two fastenings; holes from pins on the lower board, the upper one cut in for straps which are fastened with star-headed nails. Spine: supports defined with double fillets; an X of triple fillets in the panels which are bordered with double fillets on the sides., Crudely executed initials red with blue and/or red penwork designs and vice versa; initials on ff. 7v-8v have green added. Blue headings accompany red initials and red accompany blue. Initial letters stroked with red throughout. Line filler in red, blue and yellow on f. 6r., and Script: Written in small round gothic bookhand, below top line.
