Iohannes Baers (Baersius), born in Ghent 1580, d. 1653, studied theology in Leiden, was minister in various places in the Northern Netherlands, was 1629 in Pernambuco (Brasil) and in 1632 back in the Netherlands minister in Soest. He is the author of two books in Dutch, published in 1648 and 1653 respectively, but his poetic paraphrase of Lamentations seems to be unrecorded. Whether this work was finished in 1601 or 1605 is not clear. This Carmelite monk in Ghent, named Paschasius Baers, became after his conversion minister in Zele (East Flanders) and from 1580 onwards in various places in the Netherlands; from 1590 to 1603 he was active in Leeuwarden., In Latin., Script: Written by a single scribe in careful Humanistica Cursiva. Four-margins borders and miniatures above 3 lines of text opening with a 3-line foliate initial, on ff. 13r (Annuntiation), 25r (Visitation), 38r (Crucifixion), 39v (Pentecost), 41r (Nativity), 46r (Annuntiation to the Shepherds), 50r (Adoration of the Magi), 58v (Flight into Egypt), 65r (Coronation of the Virgin), 76r (Saint John on Patmos), 99r (Funeral mass). The miniatures are rounded at the top. The borders contain acanths and a multitude of gold vine and other leaves, flowers, animals, hybrids and monsters. The artist is said to be Péronet Lamy, an illuminator in the service of the Dukes of Savoy in the second quarter of the fifteenth century., and Binding: contemporary binding: brown calf over rounded wooden boards. Rich decoration. Rubrics in gold. Calendar written in blue and gold. Majuscules stroked in yellow. Line fillers in gold and colour. Numerous 1-line versals (dentelle initials). 2-line foliate initials with marginal extensions, or with a one-margin gold and colour foliate bar border, extending into the upper and lower margins; some of them contain a human face, a flower or a geometrical design. 6-or 7-line historiated initials, always accompanied by a full gold and colour foliate bar border. Several marginal portraits of a woman (ff. 21r and 83r) are probably of the original owner., Elaborate illuminated miniatures, decorating a calendar, Short Hours of the Cross, Hours of the Virgin, Penitential Psalms, and the Office of the Dead. The manuscript also includes the beginning of the Gospel according to John, a litany, and petitions., and Binding: 20th century binding by Douglas Cockerell (1926): dark red morocco over pasteboard. In Latin with some Dutch headings., Script: Copied by one Northern scribe writing Southern Textualis Formata (Rotunda) with some Humanistic features (Capital A, straight d alternating with Gothic d)., Headings in red. Lavish decoration in Ghent-Bruges style. Rectangular line-fillers in red, blue, green and gold. Trompe-l'oeil initials (1 line, 2 lines, 3 lines (rarely), 5 lines) consist of twisted branches in mat gold projecting shadow on a square background in red, blue or green. Full-page miniatures are painted on the verso of inserted singletons and are framed by four-margin borders which have their counterpart on the facing text page. Text miniatures (height: 7-8 lines) are painted in regular quires and are accompanied by four-margins, mostly floral borders., and Binding: Partly original binding in blind-tooled brown calf by the Bruges binder Ludovicus Bloc (1484-1529). The original binding is inset in brown morocco by F. Bedford (?) On each cover a panel with eight animals in tendrils, surrounded by the inscription in Roman Capitals "Ob laudem Christi librum hunc recte ligavi Ludovicus Bloc", is stamped four times; between the upper and the lower panel imprints is a five-compartment frieze containing animals. Folios 24v-25r have been erased, ruled again in lead and rewritten by a 13th century hand using Southern Gothica Textualis Libraria; the top 10 lines of f. 41r appear to be rewritten over erasure by one of the main hands. Headings, explicits and incipits in display script heightened with red. Red heightening of the opening majuscules of the verses and of the paragraph marks., Lucan's De bello civili (Pharsalia). The text is incomplete due to the loss of two quires in the middle and two leaves at the end. Marginal and interlinear glosses and corrections date from the 12th-15th centuries.
