- Abstract:
- Manuscript on parchment of Guillelmus de Sancto Theoderico (William of St. Thierry, c. 1080-1148), Epistola ad fratres de Monte Dei (De vita solitaria), without the Preface. The letter is addressed to the monks of the Charterhouse of Montdieu in the diocese of Reims. With an index of the chapters of art. 1.
- Alternative Title:
- Frater Bruno
- Description:
- Binding: Twentieth century. Yellow velvet over rounded wooden boards. The former cover consists of a 17th-century document on parchment with text on the inner side, largely illegible due to the remnants of paste on its surface, issued by “Frater Bruno [d'Affringues, 1600-1631], ... totius ordinis Cartusiensis generalis minister”. The former binding contained also three fragments of a 13th-century manuscript on parchment, containing liturgical directions. These are now kept apart with the former cover and a former parchment flyleaf., Red heightening of the majuscules, but layout and decoration lack uniformity. (1) Up to f. 12r inclusively the chapters start in the middle of a line and are preceded by a red paragraph mark; the corresponding chapter number is written by another hand at the same height in one of the side margins, and the chapter heading is added by the same hand in one of the margins and connected to the beginning of the chapter by a reference mark or by a connecting line. (2) From f. 12v up to at least f. 22v the chapters open at the left margin with a 1- or 2-line red plain initial and the corresponding heading and chapter number are copied in red by a contemporary hand in the open space on the preceding line; instructions for these are provided by the scribe (B) in small handwriting alongside the upper or lower edges. (3) Starting f. 23v for the final chapters 40-42 we see the type of layout and decoration as described under (1). On f. 1r a large and narrow “shaped inset” littera duplex in red and green initial F in red and green (8/16 ll.). with extremely developed penwork in the same colours and green extensions in the left margin., Script: Copied by two scribes writing a heavily abbreviated early Gothica Textualis Libraria with simplified letter forms: hand A (ff. 1r-10r, line 5) is rather bold and uses single-compartment a and straight s in all positions; hand B (ff. 10r, line 6-26v) is slightly less careful, there is more variety in the shape of a, and final s is either round or straight., and The lower edges of ff. 2, 7 and 11 are irregular; the lower outer corners of ff. 18, 23 and 24 are defective.

- Abstract:
- Manuscript on parchment of a collection of practical alchemies and procedures, the earliest such manuscript in the Mellon collection. Contains texts transmitted from Arabic sources and what appear to be European additions to the literature and practice of alchemy. Includes the following identifiable texts: Rasis or Aristotle, Lumen luminum perfecti magisterii; Avicenna, Epistola ad Hasen; Geber, Liber deitatis sive divinitatis and Summa perfectionis magisterii; Rasis, De aluminibus et salibus, extracts; and Richard de Fournival, Opus Arturi, or De arte alchemica. and The codex is an important, early, and comprehensive collection of largely practical alchemies and procedures. It is also of special significance both because of its early copies of texts transmitted from Arabic sources and for what appear to be very early, independent, European additions to the literature and practice of alchemy.
- Description:
- Alternating red and blue capitals throughout, some headings in red, many capitals stroked red, slight filiform decoration to opening initial of the volume, the rubrics and decoration probably by one of the scribes or another closely related hand., Binding: Early, probably 15th century. Undecorated red-dyed hide over beveled wooden boards, four brass edgepieces on each cover attached with brass nails, two brass catches on upper cover, lightly chased brass and leather clasps on lower cover (all of the material of cut sheet-brass), back with six raised bands, repaired and rebacked, with modern leather title label. In all the staves but the last on the lower pastedown the center-line is stroked red and bears the clef sign; in the last, the fourth line from the bottom has these indications., Pastedowns inside both covers are two leaves from a 14th-century Germanic (perhaps Netherlandish) manuscript on parchment containing plainsong written in Germanic neumes on five-line staves, the text in Gothica textualis formata, large gothic capitals in red or blue, one at top of lower pastedown in black and red slightly decorated., Possibly written by Frater Bartholomaeus (of?) Ol-----, 1335, according to a later note at foot of f. 88v, Script: Written by three scribes all using similar, legible, and rather cursive forms of Gothica textualis; the first scribe wrote ff. 1r-64v, the second ff. 65r-77r1, 38, and the third the remainder., Written by three scribes all using closely similar, legible, and rather cursive forms of Gothica textualis, heavily abbreviated with standard forms., and Written space 184 x 116, 2 columns, 50-49-48 lines each.

The indexes (artt. 3-4), slovenly copied in Gothica Cursiva Currens on blank pages in quire IV, are younger than the text and difficult to decipher. The same hand seems to have written the running headlines in artt. 1 and 5 and the foliation in art. 7., Simple decoration consisting of red headings and red paragraph marks. In artt. 1-2 2-line plain red initials (3-line at the opening, f. 1r); in artt. 5-7 2-line plain initials with rudimentary flourishing (often consisting of dots), all in red; the opening initials of artt. 5 and 7 are 3-line initials; a human face has been drawn in the initial on f. 51r. Guide letters. Red stroking of majuscules on ff. 49r-85r only., and There is early foliation from "f. 1" to "f. 32" in the center of the upper margin of ff. 85r-116r; the numbers are repeated on the verso and are to be understood in the modern sense, being valid for recto and subsequent verso. Many pages are blank.
