- Abstract:
- Manuscript on parchment (end pieces, worn, repaired) of Priscian, Grammatica minor.
- Description:
- 8-line initial (later addition?), f. 1r, red with crude penwork designs in red and black; biting the letter is a grotesque stretched across upper margin, outlined in black with details in red. Small initials in red and/or black: ff. 17v, 31r, 35v, etc. Paragraph marks, initial strokes, and lines drawn through text passages written in Greek, all in red., Binding: Thirteenth century (?), France. Original sewing (except for the first few gatherings) on three tawed skin, slit straps laced through tunnels in the edge to the outside of quarter sawn (?) oak boards, almost flush, and fastened with rectangular, angled wedges. Blue/green and natural color chevron endbands are sewn on tawed skin cores. There is a strip of tawed skin extending a short distance on the outside of the boards and turned in at head and tail. The boards are edged with white, tawed skin and an outer cover is whip stitched to this edging. There is no adhesive on the spine and the cover is held in place by the endbands. The outer cover probably extended and has been cut off flush. Needle holes along the inner edge of the back board fore-edge turn-in. There are traces of two strap-and-pin fastenings, the pins on the lower board. Hole bored on the tail and fore edge of the front board does not seem to serve any purpose., Script: Written by a single scribe in early gothic bookhand, above top line., and Some marginalia lost due to trimming and rubbing.

- Abstract:
- Manuscript on parchment of astrological texts drawn largely from Arab astrology of the early Middle Ages, and transmitted in medieval Latin translations; in addition Ptolemy's Centiloquium is present, transmitted not in Greek but through the Arabic, along with a single contemporary component, the Astrolabium planum of Johann Engel.
- Description:
- Binding: Nineteenth century, English. Marbled paper boards, green calf back with six heavy (false?) bands, the compartments with patterns of small tools impressed in gold and with gold-stamped titles, a small rectangular label with the printed number 1037 and a small round label with the inked number 894 glued to the bottommost compartment. All edges gilt. Preserved in a modern green cloth folding box, probably French, with leather label., Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps. Mellon MS 155, acquired from C. A. Stonehill, Inc. (bookseller), New Haven. Gift of Paul and Mary Mellon, 1965., Rubrics, and occasional headlines in red, diagrams in the text in brown and red inks. Full illuminated border, outlined in red, on f. 1r of leafy sprays in colors and gold, the white spaces filled up with black dots and small burnished gold circles each with three or four small tendrils; a large initial in burnished gold and colors at the beginning of the text in the first column, with gold band extending downward and then around three sides of the page forming an inner border, completed by a red line at top; a lozenge at the center of the lower band of the border containing a pattern of platelike discs, quatrefoils, and a leafy spray on a dull gold ground, this segment almost certainly a later replacement of an original coat of arms which has been erased. Elsewhere in the manuscript smaller illuminated initials in the style of the first frequently occur, and larger ones with descenders to partial borders at the foot of the page occur. Each of the ninety-six pages from f. 191r through 238v has four drawings in colors (six on those pages which open each of the signs of the Zodiac), placed within diagrams accompanied by slight text., and Script: Written by a single scribe in a large and clear hand in Gothica textualis formata and Bastarda.

- Abstract:
- Manuscript on paper (first leaf parchment) of a theological and moral treatise based on hundreds of quotations, mostly from texts of a scientific nature (medicine, natural history, astrology, alchemy, philosophy, etc.). Christian authors are relatively rarely quoted; excerpts from Aristotle and his commentators, a multitude of Greek and Roman authors, Arabic and more or less obscure medieval scientists are on the contrary extremely numerous .
- Description:
- Binding: Original undecorated red pigskin over wooden boards; spine with four raised bands. Two clasps attached to the rear cover, with quadrangular brass catches on the front cover; a hole about the center of the top of the rear cover indicates that the booklet once was a liber catenatus. On the front cover a rectangular parchment title label with handwritten inscription in Gothica Cursiva Libraria: “De confessione. De amore Dei. De beatitudine” (16th century?). The upper, outer and lower edges of the front cover have been repaired with red leather. F. 1 is a fragment of a 15th-century notarial act in Latin, the end of which only is preserved. The script is Gothica Cursiva. The rear pastedown is a leaf from a missal on parchment, containing the first half of the Gospel for the 13th Sunday after Pentecost (Luke 17:11-19), preceded by the end of the Gradual and the Versicle. Written in ca. 1400 Gothica Textualis Formata (Textus Semiquadratus). Red headings and stroking of majuscules; blue plain initial. Probably from Southeastern Germany or Austria., Headings, paragraph marks, stroking of majuscules and underlining of the references to the authorities and their works, all in red ink (the underlining was beforehand traced by the scribe in black ink). Plain red 1-line initials at the opening of each chapter, sometimes with marginal extensions (a 3-line initial at the beginning of the text, f. 9r). Instructions for the rubricator are found in the margins., MS 135 in the collection of Bernard M. Rosenthal, Booksellers, Berkeley, CA. Purchased from him on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund., and Script: Two scribes: art. 1 is copied in Gothica Cursiva Formata close to Fractura; art. 2 in Gothica Semihybrida Currens with many abbreviations; in this art. the first line of each chapter is in clumsily executed large Gothica Textualis Formata.

- Description:
- The decoration is uneven and differs from section to section. Artt. 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 have headings in red ink, red heightening of majuscules, red paragraph marks and red plain initials (plain and unusual flourished initials in red in art. 3) of various sizes. Artt. 2, 4 and 5-8 may have yellow heightening of majuscules too. No initials or paragraph marks in art. 8. Artt. 9-11 have red plain initials up to f. 81v; after that blank spaces with guide-letters; headings are missing after f. 67r. Artt. 2, 4, 12, 13, 14 have almost no decoration. Running headlines (author names) in large Southern Gothica Textualis Formata on pages of artt. 1, 3, 5 and 6., Binding: Nineteenth-century. Damaged half linen, the pasteboard covers covered with red paper impressed with a spiky lozenge pattern in black. Removed and rebound in purple paper. Modern binding not digitized., Cite as: Mariological, Ascetical and Other Texts. General Collection, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University., Manuscript on paper. This incomplete manuscript consists of a series of more or less independent sections. An unusual feature is the writing of text parts in the lower margins as if they were catchwords. Leaves are missing, and many texts are consequently incomplete. Many pages spoilt by the acidity of the ink. Apparently copied by four different hands, mostly very unstable and looking different depending on the period during which they entered the various sections. A (ff. 1r-54v = artt. 1-8 and ff. 107v-108v = art. 14) writes peculiar forms of Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria, which if written rapidly (Currens) tends to become a Cursiva with more pronounced Gothic features, especially in the additional artt. 2, 4 and 14; typical is the unusual abbreviation for in in the shape of dotted i. B (ff. 55r-66v = art. 9) writes Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria, equally under Gothic influence. C (ff. 67r-98v = artt. 10-11) writes a small sloping Gothico-Antiqua Currens. D (ff. 99r-105r = art. 12) writes a Humanistica Cursiva Libraria under Gothic influence; a deviant form D' is seen on ff. 106r-107r = art. 13., and Modern foliation followed. Wanting ff. 71-72.

- Abstract:
- Manuscript on paper of an alchemical compilation, apparently the holograph of the original compiler, not identified. Probably the laboratory notes of a practicing alchemist. Includes lists of Flemish names, apparently identifying fellow practitioners in early alchemy; and laboratory procedures, designed primarily to color metals and to carry out other operations with various substances. Leaves inserted and blank pages filled at later dates.
- Description:
- Binding: Probably original. Stiff parchment over paper boards, flaps over the fore-edge, probably dating from about 1525, conceivably later, as the manuscript contents do not appear to have been bound at the time of writing in any case; flat spine with modern inscription in brown ink, "Alchemical, Headings of procedures in red and blue alternating in the original section, and with some capitals stroked red; no color in the additions. No ornament., Recipes, original blue edges., Script: The original part of the codex (ff. 1-133) written in a very fine, neat, and clear humanistic hand, and using a considerable range of alchemical symbols; the later additions (ff. 134-145) consist of Latin sections written in a neat italic and German passages in flowing cursive, perhaps both by a single German hand of the 18th century., Though the whole of the manuscript has suffered some marginal water-staining since it was bound, it appears certain that other stains and damage occurred while the separated quires, or groups of them, remained unbound., and Watermark: Outstretched hand, the fingerjoints indicated, a four-leafed petal extending from the tip of the third finger, the wrist and cuff of a sleeve also depicted, comparable to Briquet 11423.
